Zdf, one of Germany’s leading broadcasters, has announced its co-production involvement ,via Zdf–Das Kleine Fernsehspiel, in the upcoming feature “Marriage by Abduction” (“Brautraub”).
The film is directed by Sophia Mocorrea and builds on her short “The Kidnapping of the Bride” which took accolades at both Berlin and Sundance. It is now one of the high profile projects at Ventana Sur’s Proyecta lineup, its main arthouse project platform.
Narrative is set against the backdrop of intercultural dynamics. The film will delve into the lives of Luisa, hailing from Buenos Aires, and Fred from Berlin, as they plan a wedding that is meant to be a symbol of liberation from traditional norms.
However, a playful German tradition of bride abduction at their wedding unexpectedly turns their world on its head, “Mocorrea explores existential questions of identity, traditions and power dynamics in intercultural relationships,” noted producer Nicole Gerhards at NiKo Film.

Alejandra Villaba García’s “Hyperballad,” Sophia Mocorrea’s “Marriage by Abduction” and Theo Court’s “Three Dark Nights” feature in a 15-title lineup of Ventana Sur’s Proyecta project lineup which is emerging as Ventana’s industry centerpiece as international co-production becomes vital to more ambitious arthouse filmmaking.
Organised by Cannes Marché du Film and the San Sebastian Film Festival, Proyecta received 200 submissions this year, up from 170 in 2022.
There is also good word on a broad range of projects from “The Heart is an Erratic Muscle” to “Moa,” “The Devil’s Well,” “Malena Once Again” and “Water Never Hurt.”

Once again, 10 promising directors are making their way to Karlovy Vary Film Festival thanks to European Film Promotion’s Future Frames – Generation Next of European Cinema initiative, ready to burst onto the international film scene.
“Over the past few years, we have established a reliable label with Future Frames,” says Sonja Heinen, Efp’s managing director, adding that the goals have remained the same: spotlighting talent, creating visibility for the emerging directors, and helping them access the market.
“Being selected gives them a certain stamp of approval. They get a platform to exchange and experience, and are equipped with coaching which they can use later in their career,” adds Nora Goldstein, project director.
Polish director Agnieszka Smoczyńska, behind Sundance award-winner “The Lure” and Cannes title “Silent Twins,” is this year’s mentor.

Back in Park City, Utah, for the first time since 2020, the Sundance Film Festival concluded with an in-person awards show. The U.S. dramatic grand jury prize went to the Focus Features release “A Thousand and One,” from debut writer-director A.V. Rockwell, one of eight women in this year’s female-led competition.
Jeremy O. Harris, a member of the three-person U.S. dramatic jury at Sundance, choked back tears as he presented the award to Rockwell, admitting that he left the director’s premiere screening and cried on the street, as the film unearthed “all the feelings I’ve learned to mask in public spaces.”
Rockwell’s film is set in an unforgiving New York City in the late ’90s, where a single mother moving from shelter to shelter kidnaps her 6-year-old son from foster care. As they improbably forge a life and bond, their darkest secret threatens to disrupt what they’ve built.

As the first in-person Sundance Film Festival since 2020 draws to a close, it’s time to see which films are taking home the festival’s most coveted awards. While there are many ways to measure success at Sundance — and many filmmakers are certainly more interested in a big sale than a trophy — the awards are nevertheless an important way of measuring which films resonated with the Park City crowd.
