A trailer for Prey has just arrived online – and no, we’re not talking about that Predator movie that was just released a while back. This is a new movie called Prey, which Vertical will be giving a theatrical and VOD release on March 15th. It seems kind of soon to be sending another movie called Prey out into the world, but clearly Vertical disagrees. Ryan Phillippe (Shooter), Emile Hirsch (The Autopsy of Jane Doe), and Mena Suvari (American Beauty) star in this “nature run amok” survival thriller, and you can check out the trailer in the embed above. A poster for the film can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Written and directed by Mukunda Michael Dewil, who previously worked with Phillippe on the 2022 thriller Collide and with Hirsch on the 2022 thriller The Immaculate Room, Prey has the following synopsis: After an extremist militant group threatens their lives,...

Exclusive: Ryan Phillippe (American Murderer), Emile Hirsch (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Mena Suvari (American Horror Story) will topline Kalahari, a new action thriller from Vertical, which has wrapped production.
Vertical fully financed the pic and has taken North American rights, with Voltage Pictures locking down rights for all international territories, preparing now to present the film to buyers at Cannes.
In the film written and directed by Mukunda Michael Dewil (Collide), a young couple is forced to flee their Christian missionary post in the Kalahari Desert aboard a rickety plane after an extremist militant group threatens their lives. Piloted by a corrupt smuggler (Hirsch), the plane loses power and crash-lands in the middle of an animal preserve populated by lions, leopards and hyenas. Injured, frightened, and being tracked by the extremists, this ragtag group must fight for their survival from both man and beast where only the strong will survive.

We’re patiently waiting to hear of a release date for Play Dead, the morgue-set thriller from Patrick Lussier, director of My Bloody Valentine 3D (watch it Here) and Drive Angry (watch that one Here). And while we continue to wait to hear when we’re going to have the chance to see the movie, star Bailee Madison (The Strangers: Prey at Night) has taken the chance to build the hype for the film, describing it as “really horrifying”.
Speaking with Collider, Madison said Play Dead is “very different” and “so messed up. It’s basically just Jerry O’Connell and I the whole movie, and it’s unlike anything I’ve ever done. It’s really… it’s really horrifying. Play Dead takes place in a morgue… it’s really all I can say. It’s really… yeah, my sister can’t watch it. I showed it to her a couple of weeks ago,...

Is Cannes back? Ahead of the 75th Cannes Film Festival, insiders told TheWrap that the Marche du Film might bring a healthy number of deals for packages and completed art-house films alike. And with sales for films big and small and from mega streamers to indies, buyers are leaving Cannes “very happy” with a volume of deal-making that some sales agents said hearkens back to the golden days before Covid. “100, I think we’re definitely back to pre-pandemic levels. Key buyers need movies, want movies, and hopefully these movies are going to be a success for them,” Nicolas Chartier, CEO of sales agent Voltage Pictures, told TheWrap. “We need people to make money, and it’s good when our buyers are happy.” Jeffrey Greenstein, a producer and president with Millennium Films, agreed. “I can tell you the buyers were very happy with the amount of product there was. As long...

Exclusive: Even before the pandemic, the foreign sales market became mired down with some risky bets, i.e. the over exorbitant Roland Emmerich sci-fi disaster title Moonfall which carried a 140M production cost (resulting in a 44.3M WW gross), and Simon Kinberg’s femme spy ensemble The 355 at a 75M cost (which grossed just under 28M WW).
But there’s arguably a safer way to make moolah in the foreign sales sphere and that’s off of YA feature adaptations.
True, it’s been a while since the grand slam days of Lionsgate’s Hunger Games series and Summit International’s Twilight franchise, however, these movies can be made off a low cost yielding singles, doubles, or even home runs at the box office. Or worst case scenario, be in the black simply off their sales to streamers. And if a movie strikes out, it doesn’t sting so...
