'Beautiful Boy' Covers School Shootings from a Different Perspective

17 December 2009 3:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

There's a new indie on the way that I have a feeling you might want to see. It tackles a modern and relevant subject matter -- mass killings at educational institutions -- and it also boasts a cast that you probably never would have dreamed of. Variety reports that Maria Bello and Michael Sheen have wrapped production on an upcoming film called Beautiful Boy. But they're not the only ones attached to this feature. They star alongside Moon Bloodgood, Alan Tudyk, Kyle Gallner, Austin Nichols, and Meat Loaf.

Whether you love epic, karaoke-adored rock songs, dodgeballing pirates, geeky teen killers trying to axe Veronica Mars, Blair Williams, or a dude who can be a werewolf or a vampire, this indie definitely has the bases covered. Written by director Shawn Ku and Michael Armbruster, the film focuses on a married couple (Sheen and Bello) who are about to get separated when »

The film just finished shooting in L.A. It is Ku's directing debut. Also in the cast is Moon Bloodgood, Alan Tudyk, Kyle Gallner, Austin Nichols and Meat Loaf. »

Terminator Salvation DVD Review

12 December 2009 11:54 PM, PST | ScreenStar | See recent ScreenStar news »

Terminator Salvation (2009), now out on DVD, is the latest entry in the long-running Terminator franchise. Sadly, it's a bit of a letdown given its killer cast -- Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin, Helena Bonham Carter, Bryce Dallas Howard, Moon Bloodgood, Jane Alexander, and Common -- and a terrific trailer that, for a while, stoked the hopes of the Terminator faithful. Bale plays John Connor, supposedly mankind's savior in the war against Skynet and its machines, while Worthington is Marcus, our worst nightmare, a human-machine hybrid whom Connor must decide whether to kill or trust, and Yelchin is Kyle Reese, a young resistance fighter. Expect lots of booming explosions, top-notch special effects (and an amazing array of terminator creatures), plenty of mostly shouted "the world depends on us"-style conversations between the aforementioned explosions, and ample tips of the cap -- including a Linda Hamilton voiceover, a sort-of appearance by a certain governator, »

Terminator Salvation Directors Cut Movie Review

10 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

Terminator Salvation the Directors Cut just hit dvd and I just finished checking it out. When I first saw Terminator Salvation in Theaters I have to admit I found the movie to be a bit of a let down. Because it starred Christian Bale I expected something along the lines of Dark Knight but unfortunately Terminator Salvation is anything but the glitz and glam that Dark Knight Was.

Terminator Salvation is a step up from Terminator 3 but it still does not manage to re-ignite the intensity that the first two films had. The directors cut which I just finished watching does have a few extended scenes including an extended scene which features  a naked Moon Bloodgood but honestly if you dont buy your dvds for nudity I would get the regular Terminator Salvation DVD as the only real change I noticed was the extended sequence where Moon Bloodgoods character meets Marcus. »

Terminator: Salvation Blu-ray Review

7 December 2009 6:43 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

With Terminator: Salvation, two things are apparent: McG shouldn’t be underrated, and franchise filmmaking robs franchise films of anything challenging. Ts is the fourth entry in the Terminator canon, and it is the first of the franchise to be set during the future wars (usually shown in brief flashbacks) that fans had long clamored for. It also has a distinctive feature in that it’s the first film without the heavy participation of Arnold Schwarzenegger. My review of Terminator Salvation after the jump.

The film starts in the recent past (2003) when convict Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) is being put to death and a researcher (Helena Bonham Carter) wants him to donate his body to science. Cut to 2018, and John Connor (Christian Bale) is part of the resistance fighting the evil Skynet and their terminators. Bale is introduced with a fairly impressive sequence that tries to emulate the one-shot wonders in Children of Men. »

Blu-Ray Review: Forgettable ‘Terminator Salvation’ Gets Supreme Treatment on Blu-Ray

7 December 2009 1:38 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The “Terminator” series is not one of the great modern movie franchises. The films have mainly served as ideal vehicles for the limited acting range of Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose muscular build and Austrian accent were perfect for the role of a formidable, oft-mute cyborg. A “Terminator” picture without him is like an “Alien” picture without Sigourney Weaver. The best entries of both franchises were their second installments directed by James Cameron. “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”’s tireless invention and energy were a real kick, and the filmmakers came up with some unforgettable images, such as the shape-shifting T-1000.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0

Terminator Salvation,” the fourth (and hopefully final) entry in the series, attempts to reboot the stale franchise by setting its story in a post-Judgment Day wasteland, where much of humanity has been destroyed by their machines. This supposedly fresh approach to the material is derivative of every post-apocalyptic thriller in recent memory. »

McG Still Thinking He'll Direct 'Terminator' Sequels

7 December 2009 9:13 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

The one thing that stood out to me about McG's direction of Terminator Salvation was how little flare he showed when it came to the story. The look of the film was terrific, the action was great, he mined quality action movie performances out of Sam Worthington and Moon Bloodgood, but I didn't think there was anything connecting all of it together.

Even though he further derailed a franchise that needed an uptick after T3 and the fourth film essentially bankrupted its producers, McG believes he's still going to direct the fifth and sixth Terminator films. I'm sure the new owners of the franchise will have something to say about that, and the future of Terminator should become clear within a couple months.

Still, McG participated in a Bd-Live chat, providing commentary to a live stream of the film, and Gizmodo was there for the whole thing. Before Terminator Salvation was released, »

The Rachel Bilson Sex Scene You Won't Want to Watch

2 December 2009 11:50 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When it comes to topless scenes, director McG just can't seem to catch a break. First he had to cut out the gratuitous Moon Bloodgood topless scene from Terminator Salvation in order to maintain the film's PG-13 rating (it's now featured on the DVD, but I heard there's nothing bloody good about it), and now he's forced to use a body double for Rachel Bilson when the actress refuses to drop her clothes for a sex scene with Adam Scott in the romantic drama Hearts of Palm.

Never heard of it? Well then, why don't you let the good folks from Funny or Die clue you in on this under-the-radar gem that features what has to be the world's most ... um, "interesting" body double in place of a nekked Bilson. There's not much else to add except that we hope Adam Scott was handsomely rewarded for this because one can't »

With Black Friday sales behind us but with Christmas right around the corner, there’s still time to get some great movies on DVD and Blu-ray this holiday season. To help, here’s a list of some of the new movie and TV shows coming to DVD and Blu-ray this week that we’re looking forward to seeing. Of all the new releases, we’re particularly interested in the Blu-ray versions of movies and TV shows such as The Wizard of Oz, Gremlins, Snatch, Ben 10: Alien Swarm and the Blu-ray debut of McG’s Terminator: Salvation (shown above with Christian Bale and Sam Worthington).

Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 12/1

1 December 2009 10:32 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Terminator Salvation

I suspect McG's movie will play really well at home, with the volume turned up and the surround sound explosions masking the lack of a compelling story and lackluster performances. Everyone from Christian Bale to Anton Yelchin to Sam Worthington to Bryce Dallas Howard was overshadowed by the special effects and the robots running rampant. However, at home you can walk in and out, pause, rewind, and replay -- and yes, freeze frame Moon Bloodgood's extremely brief topless scene -- without harming an essentially harmless movie. Rent it. Also available in a 3-disc Blu-ray edition, with theatrical and director's cut, alternate endings, featurettes, and more

Review: 'Terminator Salvation' on Blu-ray

30 November 2009 3:37 PM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

There’s no doubt that when James Cameron made the first Terminator movie in 1984 he figured on telling his story and moving on. Little did he know that 25 years later, it would remain a cultural touchstone spawning sequels, a television series, books, comics, and stuff.

Wisely, Cameron also knew when it was time to move on. Coaxed back for the sequel, he delivered a high-octane action thriller that also pushed the limits of movie technology as we marveled at some of the earliest CGI that had our collective jaws drop.

After the ownership got passed around like a bowl of potato chips, The Halcyon Company now controls the destiny of SkyNet and their progeny. Earlier this year, they offered up Terminator Salvation, moving the story to right after Judgment Day in 2018, but before someone thought to send Kyle Reese back in time. The fourth feature, therefore, is both a sequel »

Blu-ray Capsule Review: Terminator Salvation

30 November 2009 2:43 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Terminator Salvation Quick Thoughts: Terminator Salvation as a film is no better on Blu-ray than it was in theaters when I gave it a "D" review, but I will say watching it in the comfort of my own home is far less annoying than it was when I had to endure it's stupidity at the cinema. Of course, at that time it was a major letdown. Now, I know exactly what to expect, a film made up of action set pieces completely devoid of anything resembling an intelligent storyline. As long as you are cool with that this film delivers.

On Blu-ray the action is just as impressive as it was in theaters outside of a few complaints I won't even worry about getting into here as you can read my theatrical review for those details. The visuals of the film are equally impressive and I still think Dp Shane Hurlbut »

Terminator Salvation (Director’s Cut) Blu-ray Review

29 November 2009 10:01 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

I’m finding that there are some movies that I like more upon a second viewing. It could be that once expectations are set aside (either upheld or smashed upon the first viewing) that it’s easier to accept a movie a bit more… forgivingly. While I certainly still don’t love Terminator Salvation (click link for my initial review), I’ll have to admit I found myself enjoying it more the second time around.

Terminator Salvation is released on DVD and Blu-ray this week, and I’ll be giving you the specs and a review of the Blu-ray director’s cut version right here.

The film wasn’t the huge hit the studio was hoping for in the U.S., bringing in only $125Mm. However it did much better overseas, bringing it’s worldwide total to a respectable $371Mm. As far as reviews go, it earned a 32% positive rating at Rotten Tomatoes, »

Blu-ray review: Terminator Salvation Director's Cut

23 November 2009 4:51 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Previous Terminator films saw killer robots travel back in time to obliterate any human threat to a grim future ruled by machines.

In Terminator Salvation, out on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK today (Monday, November 23), we finally see that nightmarish future.

This fourth adventure in the franchise is an action-packed, post-apocalyptic war film set in 2018, in the wastelands that remain after supercomputer Skynet becomes self-aware and decides to reduce civilisation to cinders in a nuclear strike known as Judgment Day.

Terminator Salvation is both a prequel and a sequel, showing the future events prior to the time-travel missions that took place in the previous movies. So how does it shape up on Blu-ray?

Resistance fighter John Connor (Christian Bale, with a rasping voice) is seen by some survivors as a saviour and by others as a false prophet. He uncovers a research facility detailing plans to create an advanced »

Terminator Salvation: Director's Cut Blu-ray Review

23 November 2009 11:52 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Terminator Salvation comes to Blu-ray with an unfortunate chip on its shoulder. After director McG informed the media that the high definition version would run over 30 minutes longer and be slapped with the fan requested R-rating, Warner delivered the final specs that held up on the rating but fell about 90 percent short on the additional footage.

The fourth installment in the Terminator lexicon is as much a reboot as a continuation, shuffling the entire cast and setting the film in a post apocalyptic Judgment Day world where Skynet rules and humans scavenge for life's necessities in order to survive. A war-grizzled John Connor (Christian Bale) is the central character, the prophesied savior of mankind whose very existence Skynet is willing to travel through time to extinguish. He is not quite the Resistance's leader yet but makes up for any lack of authoritative control by barking commands in the familiar low gruff Batman monotone voice. »

Sex and Nudity Don't Draw You to the Movies?

20 November 2009 9:45 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Would you have liked Terminator Salvation more if Moon Bloodgood's topless bit hadn't been cut out? Would you have been more likely to see the movie in theaters if you knew there was a flash of boob? Probably not, according to a recent psychological study, which looked at 914 movies released between 2001 and 2005 to determine if sex indeed sells at the cinema.

The results of the study say no: "sex and nudity do not, on the average, boost box office performance, earn critical acclaim or win major awards." Well, the research did show that the Golden Globes are more favorable to movies with sex scenes than the Oscars, which might make sense given that many foreign moviegoers (particularly those in Europe) are more accepting of nudity than American viewers, though it's unlikely the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is thinking about sex while determining its nominees.

In contrast, the study actually »

Shadows of The Dark Knight Pt 2: Is dark the key to success?

16 November 2009 2:25 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

When Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight made a billion dollars at the global box office and became America's second highest-grossing movie of all time, several subsequent action-adventure releases used its dark formula but without the same success.

As everyone now realises, the Warner Bros release did not succeed because it was dark, as Marvel's studio boss Kevin Feige has pointed out.

As Feige rightly says, it succeeded because it respected the source material (and also made it accessible for the ordinary viewer). Admittedly, it was helped along by the interest generated by Heath Ledger's untimely demise.

But hardcore fans do tend to want more violence in films - on superhero fan forums the cry for an adult rating is commonplace. Studios, though, are more wary about shutting out the family market altogether, especially since Watchmen and even more especially in a shaky economy.

Blood, gore and brutal violence often has to be omitted, »
