There are a number of stories about how Gulzar, who has been awarded the 58th Jnanpith Award along with Sanskrit scholar Jagatguru Rambhadracharya, became one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated lyricists after being better known in his years as a struggler after Partition in Mumbai for his expertise in re-painting cars mauled in crashes.
The one that seems most credible, however, has come from him. Despite his skill with car colours, Gulzar’s first love was the written word and he was a regular at the Progressive Writers Association (Pwa), which was then a creative hub of just about every Titan in Hindi and Urdu literature.
It was at Pwa meetings that the undiscovered poet struck up a friendship with lyricist Shailendra, who introduced him to Bimal Roy, who, in turn, told him that he was wasting his time and talent at a car workshop.

The year 2023 saw a string of performances that touched a note in our hearts. In our annual tradition of acknowledging the best acts, films, performances, and scenes offered by some of the best films of the year, we are back with Koimoi Audience Poll 2023.
Last year saw some brilliant films like 12th Fail and some commercial blockbusters like Animal. But amidst all the chest-thumping, some performances did not reach the public eye or took a lot of time and effort to reach the audiences.
Still, they made an impact strong and cemented their position in the audience’s hearts as well. These performances need all the applause irrespective of whether the films they were a part of were commercially taken off or tanked.

Vishal Bharadwaj‘s Khufiya 2023, based on the book Escape to Nowhere by Amar Bhushan, is an espionage thriller that is filled with nuances and constructed of hidden thoughts and secret desires. As the story of the film begins with a mission gone wrong in Bangladesh in 2004, it promises to be a gripping and suspenseful journey into the world of spies and intrigue. But with a runtime of two and a half hours, the events in the film propel with such momentum that the impetus the story demands never gets its due and leaves the entire viewing experience dissatisfied. The film does not lack proper development and resolution; rather, the lackluster flow of scenes hinders the flow and inhibits us from fully engaging with the story. The narrative focuses on the inevitable human tragedy at the heart of a power structure whose intentions are to safeguard the interests of its...

Vishal Bharadwaj, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Ali Fazal recently appeared on the IMDb exclusive segment ‘On The Scene,’ to talk about their film ‘Khuifya’. The movie is an official adaptation of the acclaimed spy-fiction novel, ‘Escape to Nowhere’ by Amar Bhushan. Together the trio spilled the beans on what it was like working on such a project, and for the first time with each other.
Bharadwaj on mistakes being a part of the process said, “There is a scene where for the first time Ali and Wamiqa confront each other. The first day we shot this scene, we made a mistake because in the scene she gets hit on her forehead. But when I saw the mark of the wound, it was not clear, and it appeared as if weeks or months had passed since the wound. I was very conscious of that because while you shoot, a phase comes where...

Netflix India has released some really good content this year, and the most prominent show from the streaming giant is Kohrra. Other than this Punjab based Netflix India Original; Class, Friday Night Plan, Choona, Guns & Gulaabs, and Jaane Jaan are some of the latest additions to the Netflix India lineup. Khufiya, directed by the famous Vishal Bharadwaj, is a new inclusion that, by the looks of it, is a spy thriller set in post-liberalization India. Vishal Bharadwaj also dropped a whodunnit web series Charlie Chopra and the Mystery of the Solang Valley, and we think the filmmaker is on a roll to be coming out with back-to-back work that will further diversify his filmography.

Director-composer Vishal Bharadwaj, who is awaiting the release of his spy film ‘Khufiya’, has worked with the renowned actress Tabu alongside actors Ali Fazal and Wamiqa Gabbi in the movie. Detailing Tabu’s role in the film, the director said it is something very different from anything Tabu has done before.
As much a spy film centered around espionage as it is based on character study, Tabu plays Krishna Mehra, an operative of India’s external Intelligence agency Research & Analysis Wing (Ra&w).
Grappling with her dual identity as both a spy and a lover, the actress plays the role of a conflicted woman as she is assigned to investigate a colleague who appears to have leaked information that led to the death of her girlfriend in Bangladesh.
As such, the mission is almost a personal objective for her. Speaking to ‘Variety’, Vishal Bharadwaj detailed Tabu’s role in the...

Charlie Chopra & The Mystery of Solang Valley is Vishal Bharadwaj’s foray into the whodunit genre where we’re presented with many suspects, and it is always the unexpected ones that end up being the murderers. Though the show opened to lukewarm reviews, the overarching journey of Charlie Chopra, who is inspired by Agatha Christie’s characters, allows the audience to remain on the edge of the seat for some time. Agatha Christie Limited is one of the producers of the show for these six episodic web series based on the author’s book The Sittaford Mystery.

Vishal Bharadwaj’s latest outing, in the form of a whodunnit Charlie Chopra & The Mystery of Solang Valley, is a story about a murder in a family. It also digs deep into the family of the deceased and how they react to the death. There is a pinch of humor added to this show to allow the audience to view it cheekily with a hint of satire. Every whodunnit drama ends with the revelation of the killer’s identity, who is generally a family member or someone from the vicinity with an ulterior motive. The same could be said about Charlie Chopra & The Mystery of Solang Valley. Here, we help you understand the chain of events that take place after the murder to find out who committed the crime.

Netflix’s latest spy thriller, Khufiya, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and headlined by Tabu alongside Wamiqa Gabbi and Ali Fazal is an intense combination of suspense and complexity. The strongest suit of this film are its layered, complex characters. This film features Tabu in the role of an independent and fierce R&aw agent, for whom, her work and her country take precedence to everything else.
Yet, beneath the layer of espionage, Tabu’s character reveals herself as not just a dedicated agent but also a loving mother and a committed partner, adding depth and nuance to her persona.
Speaking of her character, Tabu said, “I’ve had a long relationship with this film, I think I was one of the first ones to be cast. It is always a challenging yet beautiful experience to play a character with such depth. I would describe Krishna Mehra as a complex and dedicated woman.

Whodunnits are all the rage these days. Just recently, we had Anu Menon’s Neeyat, with a superlative cast but bland execution. A few years ago, Netflix gave us the highly indulgent Nawazuddin-starring Raat Akeli Hai. SonyLIV’s latest offering is Vishal Bharadwaj directorial, Charlie Chopra & The Mystery of Solang Valley that explores not just a murder but the familial dynamics around it. This Hindi-language web series, based on Agatha Christie’s novel The Sittaford Mystery, was released on September 27, 2023.
This six episodic miniseries is about the murder of Brigadier Meherban Singh Rawat after a séance conducted by his family predicts his death. It cannot be a mere coincidence, which makes the audience wonder if the family close to the brigadier are into black magic or if this was an orchestrated plan to get rid of this rich man, who happens to own a ski resort as well. Shahid Kapoor has been at the pinnacle ever since Vishal Bharadwaj’s Kaminey and Haider, where he peaked and entered his second phase as an actor. Representing himself as a serious performer, he has shed his chocolate boy image to become a menacing anti-hero in his recent films and web series. If Kabir Singh was an angry man with a thermometer and a stethoscope, Sumair, in Bloody Daddy, is Kabir Singh wielding knives and guns. The similarity is difficult to miss as you see him shouting and summoning the same rigor in his voice, even though he is placed in a completely different circumstance here. Sumair seems to have the same behavioral traits as Kabir, but when he sees a man forcing himself on a woman, it enrages him. Sumair at least understands consent. Apart from that, he is an incessantly irresponsible father and an alcoholic, and he doesn’t...

Mumbai, Feb 10 (Ians) Actors Wamiqa Gabbi and Ishan Khatter, who are receiving a lot of positive response to their short film ‘Fursat’, trained extensively in contemporary dance since the narrative dance as the vehicle to carry the story forward.
The actress was busy shooting for another project and had to fly in between schedules to commit to her training for the project.
Wamiqa said: “Dance is a language that Vishal Sir used in this movie. We have mostly used contemporary dance steps and the brief I got was irrespective of where you stand or what your position is, everyone should look like each other’s mirror image – which meant our timings had to be bang on.”
Wamiqa is a trained Kathak dancer but getting into the new territory of a new form was exciting.

Kuttey
Directed by Aasmaan Bhardwaj
The talented Ashish Vidyarthi gets to be seen in two places this week. He is splendid as an entrepreneurial broker in the new Netflix series Trial By Fire. In Kuttey which is stuffed to the gills with avant garde actors Vidyarthi has little to do except laugh heartily at some vague feeble fable that Tabu cracks about a scorpio and a frog. After a few seconds I stopped listening.
She is also fond of cracking up over her own philosophy of life: “Logic ki maa ki aankh.”
Best wishes to you too.
Pammi, that’s Tabu, could do some better lines. In the meanwhile, everybody tries to get the better of one another in this Guy Ritchie-meets-Vishal Bharadwaj kind of crime caper where the incumbent mantra is greed.
I think it was Ayn Rand who once said one needn’t be embarrassed or apologetic about being greedy.

From its coarse language to its intense comedy and darkish tone, upcoming film “Kuttey” has shades of the 2009 Shahid Kapoor-starrer “Kaminey”. “Kuttey” has been directed by “Kaminey” helmer Vishal Bhardwaj’s son Aasmaan and the title comes across as an extension to the 2009 movie. The over-two-minute-long trailer, which was released on Tuesday, teases the viewers with a glimpse of the song “Dhan Te Nan” from the 2009 film “Kaminey”.
The 2009 song’s composer, Vishal Bhardwaj, has also given the music for “Kuttey”.
The trailer grabs the ears of viewers as Arjun Kapoor, Tabu, and Radhika Madan are seen using explicit language to make a point.
In 2009, the censors had objected o the dialogues of “Kaminey” because they felt it had way too much violence. The film was given an ‘A’ certificate. They had suggested major cuts if Vishal Bharadwaj was keen on a ‘U/A’ certificate.

Modern Love: Mumbai (Amazon Prime Video)
Six films directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, Hansal Mehta, Nupur Asthana, Vishal Bharadwaj, Dhruv Sehgal, Shonali Bose
Three of the six films—we can’t call them episodes as they are all self-contained independent narratives—are absolute winners. The stand-out films here are clearly Hansal Mehta’s BaaiVishal Bhardwaj’s Mumbai Dragon and Shonali Bose’s Raat RaniThe last being special for Fatima Sana Shaikh’s rousing performance, but more on that later.
Hansal Mehta’s Baai features Pratik Gandhi as the scion of a conservative Muslim family struggling in the closet. Rich in ambiance and brimming with romance music and elegance Baai is a classic representation of what can be done in the Ott space if a filmmaker has his heart set on it. While Pratik and debutant Ranveer Brar are splendidly paired as lovers, Baai brims over with wonderful actors in even the smallest part; for example,...
