NBCUniversal may have kicked off TV’s upfront week with the Wicked trailer, Snoop Dogg, and adorable penguins, but it closed Monday with a more dedicated pitch to one of its marquee divisions: It’s Spanish-language business Telemundo.
Held inside The Shed’s eight-story glass-encased McCourt space, Telemundo focused its tight presentation on its recent ratings wins over arch-rival TelevisaUnivision, with some not so subtle jabs at its competitor.
“We constantly change and give our audiences what they want, while others continue to do the same thing, night after night, week after week, year after year,” Telemundo’s new chairman, Luis Fernandez, told the crowd.
“We are known for being innovators, and filling the void of content to represent Latinos from all walks of life,” added Cesar Conde, the head of the NBCU News Group who also oversees Telemundo. “No other media company can do that because we are the...

Hoyte Van Hoytema has taken top honors at the 38th annual American Society of Cinematographers Awards for his work on “Oppenheimer.”
Van Hoytema topped a field that included Edward Lachman for “El Conde, Matthew Libatique for “Maestro,” Rodrigo Prieto for “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Robbie Ryan for “Poor Things.”
The awards were handed out Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with Ed Helms hosting the festivities.
All five theatrical feature film nominees are also nominated for best cinematography at the Oscars.
In its 38-year history, only 17 have gone on to win the Oscar. Last year, Mandy Walker made history when she became the first woman to win an ASC award for her work on “Elvis.” The Academy Award ultimately went to James Friend for “All Quiet on the Western Front.”
On the TV side, winners included Carl Herse for “Barry” and Ben Kutchins for “Boston Strangler.”

Like we did with the cameras, now it’s the lenses’ turn. We made a chart with the lenses used to shoot the Oscars 2024 (96th Academy Awards) Best Picture and Cinematography nominees. The picture is clear. Panavision has no competition.
Oscars 2024: Lens Manufacturers chart
There’s no real competition for Panavision. This company is doing something right. Although Panavision lenses can not be purchased (rental-only glass), acclaimed DPs just love the lenses, and the excellent Panavision service as well.
Oscars 2024: Cameras & Lenses
Here’s the final list of the Oscars 2024 (96th Academy Awards) Best Picture and Cinematography nominees. Instead of a dull list, we created slides showing the movie poster and the cameras and lenses that shot the movie. Underneath the slides, there’s the description, plus the Dp (Director of Photography) that shot the movie. Explore the list below:

We came, we saw, we conquered. Our Nicholas Bell was in review overdrive assessing the entire competition and much more. We’ll still have film reviews to populate the site and this page in the near future, but for the time being here is a handy quick link to the wealth of richness (and some rubbish) selections that made up all sections of the Lido this year.

Just four days ago was the 50th anniversary of the 1973 coup d’etat, when Augusto Pinochet came to absolute power in Chile. The Pinochet we all know and have heard of died in 2006, but El Conde, the new Netflix film, has a surprise for you. Pinochet is alive, and what happened in 2006, when Pinochet stopped his heart and pretended to die, was just one of his skills as a vampire. Yes, the Chilean dictator is actually a 250-year-old vampire who invites trouble after he is suspected of having been on a killing spree, feasting on the hearts of people. Vampires are known to do that. Eating hearts ensures that they grow young. This satirical black comedy, directed by Pablo Larrain, brings him back to familiar territory, dealing with Augusto Pinochet and the aftermath of his military dictatorship. In 2012, Larrain directed the critically acclaimed “No,” and here he is again dealing with ‘Pinochetism,...

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020), “Dune” (2022) and last year’s champ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. A slew of winners — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019) and 2021 winner “Sound of Metal.” Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by...

Given the chaos wrought by the SAG-AFTRA strike, Toronto has just announced a surprisingly strong first-wave lineup.
In recent days, festival regulars have been apprehensive about the prospects of starry English-language movies making it to Venice, Toronto and Telluride, especially after the blow Venice was dealt last week when Zendaya starrer Challengers pulled out of its opening slot and moved to a spring 2024 release.
Despite the challenges, TIFF’s Cameron Bailey has managed to pull in an impressive lineup of potential awards contenders and acquisition titles. Among the lineup are Emily Blunt starrer Pain Hustlers, Sony’s Dumb Money, Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman, Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, Anthony Hopkins starrer One Life, Kate Winslet drama Lee, and plenty others. This is in addition to some strong arthouse debuts such as Ladj Ly’s new movie and a handful of Cannes holdovers including Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone Of Interest...

NBCUniversal is getting a major C-suite shake-up.
Comcast president Mike Cavanagh is undertaking a significant executive reorganization of NBCUniversal, giving expanded responsibilities to executives Donna Langley, Mark Lazarus and Cesar Conde, and cutting the number of direct reports he deals with on a regular basis to four operational leaders.
Langley, the chair of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, will now oversee all content for the company, including for streaming and TV. Her new title will be chairman of the NBCUniversal studio group & chief content officer.
Conde, the chairman of the NBC News Group, will add oversight of Telemundo, the company’s Spanish-language division, as well as the company’s local TV business.
