Where do you even begin with a year brimming with as much exciting music as 2020 had to offer? Even if you limit it to what made it to TV screens, it’s still a daunting collection of possibilities.
To start, there were the undeniable musical charms of “Central Park,” “The Eddy,” and “P-Valley,” all of which drew heavily on original songs to help tether their stories to a distinct time and place.
Phillip Glass, Harold Budd (“I Know This Much is True”), Alan Silvestri (“Cosmos: Possible Worlds”) and Atticus Ross all added to their robust, ever-growing bodies of work.
Musicians who have helped define the atmospheres of their respective series — like Ramin Djawadi for “Westworld” or Jesse Novak for “BoJack Horseman” — continued to do so as the characters in focus faced monumental changes. In the middle of it all, Jeff Russo held onto his title of the busiest musician in...

In 2018, Greta Van Fleet released Anthem of the Peaceful Army, their first full-length album after two EPs that landed them three Grammy nominations and recognition from Robert Plant, Jack White and more. At the time of the album’s release, Rolling Stone critic Will Hermes said Michigan band “seem like they leapt fully-formed from the skull of a rock critic in 1975. There’s an element of the ridiculous in this. But there’s also a charm to their guileless, retro-fetishist conviction.”

With the electronic pulse familiar from "The Social Network," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," and "Gone Girl" (all composed with Trent Reznor) heightened nearly to the breaking point, the new Ep has us even more excited for "Triple 9" (Open Road, February 26). The hands-on Hillcoat "had a particular vision for the music on this movie, which was raw sounding electronics accompanied by, bizarrely, a saxophone," according to Ross. "John wanted to avoid ‘sophistication’ and capture the excitement of hands-on performances with noisy, broken machines.” The collaborators succeeded: the first track, the cleverly titled "Ticking Glock," is intense enough to rouse you from even the deepest mid-afternoon malaise. The Ep, co-created with Bobby Krlic, Leopold Ross, and Claudia Sarne, also features Ross' remix of Cypress Hill's 1991 'Pigs.' All of Ross' profits from the song will be donated to the National...

Documentary team behind Sundance Grand Jury winner launches crowd-funding campaign for next film; Atticus Ross to score.
The team behind acclaimed documentary Blood Brother, this year’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize (documentary) and Audience Award (documentary) winner, have today launched a Kickstarter campaign for their second feature, which has Oscar-winning composer Atticus Ross on board to score.
New project Gennadiy follows a Ukrainian activist who runs an orphanage and goes on night raids to try and rescue children who have fallen into drug abuse. The film will chart the nature of addiction, the mercurial Gennadiy’s controversial methods and the Ukraine’s problems with child homelessness.
Blood Brother writer-director Steve Hoover, producer Danny Yourd and cinematographer John Pope all return for the feature.
Trent Reznor collaborator Atticus Ross, who co-scored The Social Network and The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo will score the film alongside his brother, Leopold Ross, and wife, Claudia Sarne.

While we didn't think much of the actual movie, one reason soundtrack and score fans might want to check out "Broken City" is that it boasts brand new music from Atticus Ross, alongside past collaborators Claudia Sarne and Leopold Ross. The Oscar winner behind "The Social Network" score, which he co-wrote with Trent Reznor, has been steadily getting more cinema work, contributing to the team of talented musicians on the Mexican drama "Days Of Grace," and reteaming with Reznor on "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." But this time around, he's giving folks a bit of a peek into his creative process. The composer/musician has curated a music playlist exclusively for Rdio that delves into this inspirations, and it's pretty solid stuff. Mostly looking back to the past, the mixtape of sorts is bookended by David Bowie, features cuts from Tangerine Dream and Giorgio Moroder and their work for...

Composer Atticus Ross, best known for his and Trent Reznor’s Oscar-winning score for The Social Network and his masterful work on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Book of Eli, as curated a playlist sharing his musical inspiration behind the soundtrack for Broken City – which we’ve reviewed right here.
The playlist is below, followed by the embedded Rdio player so you can listen to the album in full right here on Blogomatic3000.
Broken City follows a disgraced ex-cop turned private detective (Mark Walhberg) who uncovers a much grander scandal when he’s double-crossed by the mayor of New York (Russell Crowe).
Ross takes us along this action-packed journey with music that builds an equally compelling sound narrative, bookending the playlist with David Bowie tracks and sprinkling his own signature haunting sound from the film in between.
1. David Bowie – Heroes
2. Tangerine Dream – Love on a Real Train (Risky Business)
3. Atticus Ross,...

A review of soundtracks released May 8, 2012 including films based on soap operas and board games (seriously?) plus a British television series based on a classic character. Aren’t there any original ideas anymore!?!
Dark Shadows: Original Score by Danny Elfman
Dark Shadows marks the fourteenth time Danny Elfman has scored a Tim Burton film (and sixth with Johnny Depp). The two came together for Burton’s first feature-length film Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure in 1985 and have since both gone on to have prominent careers. Their latest collaboration, Dark Shadows, is a remake of a soap opera that aired from 1966-1971. The original score features the usual gothic orchestral sounds that are associated with Elfman. One thing that makes this unique from previous Elfman scores is the sometimes use of synthesizers to provide a 70’s vibe, like on the track “Shadows (Reprise).” Elfman also manages to incorporate the original theme...

You probably loved his invigorating Social Network score — and although it’s safe to assume you can’t remember anything from Dragon Tattoo, other than some tinkling pianos — so this news should be of even the mildest interest. According to FilmMusicReporter (via ThePlaylist), Atticus Ross, frequent collaborator of Trent Reznor‘s, will be scoring the Keanu Reeves-starring, Carl Erik Rinsch-directed samurai epic 47 Ronin.
Written by Hossein Amini (Drive) and Chris Morgan (Fast Five), Ronin is “based on the true story of 47 Ronin, samurai swordsmen who avenged the death of their master in 18th century Japan.” Reeves — possibly living up to the idea that he’s Hollywood’s favorite faux Asian — is leading a cast that also includes Rinko Kikuchi, Tadanobu Asano (Thor), and Hiroyuki Sanada (Sunshine).
This marks both Ross‘ debut as a solo composer (the Book of Eli score was done with his brother, Leopold Ross, and wife,...

While Atticus Ross is best known for his collaborations with Trent Reznor in Nine Inch Nails and of course on the soundtracks for "The Social Network" (which won them an Oscar) and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," he has ventured out on his own on more than one occassion. He has worked close with the Hughes Brothers, scoring their TV series "Touching Evil" (alongside his wife and brother, Claudia Sarne and Leopold Ross) as well as "The Book of Eli" and Albert's segment in "New York, I Love You." Ross also contributed to the excellent array of talent on the "Days of Grace" soundtrack. Well, he's once again striking out with a solo gig, and and it's one helluva blockbuster project.
Film Music Reporter reveals that Ross will score Carl Erik Rinsch's upcoming 3D samaurai tale "47 Ronin." Starring Keanu Reeves, Rinko Kikuchi, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kou Shibasaki and Tadanobu Asano...

"Mexico City. 2002, 2006, 2010. A cop. A hostage. A wife. Corruption, violence, vengeance. Three destinies, during 30 days, during three Soccer World Cups. Three ways to fight in order to survive." This is the synopsis of "Days Of Grace." Starring Eva Longoria, Carlos Bardem (Javier's brother), Miguel Rodarte and Paulina Gaitan, while writer/Director Everardo Gout's first feature doesn't have a U.S. release date yet (it screened out of competition at Cannes last year), it does have a rather interesting soundtrack worth noting and maybe that'll give it extra attention.
