From the director of The Ruins, Swallowed is a queer horror nightmare about drugs, bugs and the extremes we are willing to endure to protect the ones we love. Director Carter Smith and actress Jena Malone have teamed up again, thirteen years after they worked together on Smith’s feature directorial debut The Ruins (watch it Here), on a new horror film called Swallowed – a project Smith has described as a “slimy wild queer horror nightmare of a movie”. (Read our review Here.) We’ve been following the progress of Swallowed for a year and a half, and now we have a very good update to share: the movie is set to receive a VOD and digital release on February 14th! Along with the release date news comes the unveiling a new trailer, which can be seen in the embed above.
Swallowed has the following synopsis: After a drug run goes bad – two childhood friends must survive a horrific night in a backwoods hell of drugs, bugs, and obscene intimacy in this queer horror nightmare.

“Listen, nobody wanted it to happen like this:” In the trailer for Carter Smith’s “Swallowed,” two friends go from a melancholic goodbye to being mired in a drug deal gone nightmarishly wrong. Benjamin (Cooper Koch) and Dom (Jose Colon) are two friends in a backwoods Maine town. While Benjamin is set to move to Los Angeles and attempt to break into the world of gay porn, Dom tries to do the right thing by offering Benjamin a way to score some quick cash.

"Not for the squeamish." Uh oh. Momentum Pics has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Swallowed, the latest from filmmaker Carter Smith. It premiered at a few genre festivals last year, including at Fantasia and Overlook. Not to be confused with the other body horror film Swallow, with Haley Bennett, this one is a bit different. The film follows two best friends on their final night together in a small town, with a nightmare of drugs and bugs and horrific intimacy. "Dripping with blood and pus, Swallowed is queer body horror with all the naked flesh and shocking violations of a classic midnight movie." Starring Jena Malone, Mark Patton, Cooper Koch, and Jose Colon. This trailer seems a bit tame, or they don't seem to want to show all the gross stuff, with only a few quick glimpses near the end. Still seems disgusting. ›››

Back in 2008, Carter Smith directed what I consider to be one of the most unsettling movies ever made, The Ruins (based on the equally unnerving book of the same name by Scott Smith), so it's no surprise his new movie, Swallowed, was one of the most nerve-fraying films I saw last year (winning the Jury Prize for Scariest Feature Film at Popcorn Frights). I'm thrilled that Swallowed will be coming to VOD and Digital on February 14th via Momentum Pictures, and we have a look at the tense trailer ahead of its Valentine's Day release!
Written and directed by Carter Smith, Swallowed stars Cooper Koch, Jose Colon, Jena Malone, and Mark Patton in one of the best performances I've seen in years.
In case you missed it, Mark Patton has a GoFundMe page set up to help him with hospital fees for vital medical treatments. Popcorn Frights will also be...

Swallowed is set in a remote township on the border between Maine and Canada and, according to the project’s description, “is a story about friendship and the extremes we are willing to endure to protect the ones we love. Momentum Pictures is targeting a Feb. 14, 2023 release.
Cooper Koch, Jena Malone, Mark Patton, and newcomer Jose Colon star in the movie that was produced by Smith, Noah Lang, Helio Campos and Ross O’Connor. Josh Senior and Evan Buxbaum executive produced.

’00s teenagers and fans of particularly gnarly horror will remember The Ruins fondly; a rare, hyper-gory post-Saw squirm-a-thon that’s only won more fans in the years since its first bow. Director and photographer Carter Smith’s latest however – only his second feature since that cult debut in 2006 – is a completely different animal entirely. A thinner, cheaper, queerer and potentially more interesting thriller that shifts both gears, and genres, throughout.
Up front, Swallowed is a thin-on-the-ground drug story; starry-eyed Benjamin (Cooper Koch) is on the verge of a big move to LA to chase fame as a porn star. But his final night with boyfriend Dom (Jose Colon) goes off the rails, when a get rich quick scheme leaves them both choking down baggies full of mysterious powder to smuggle across the US-Canadian border – a move that goes from bad to body horror when a bag splits and an already...

Blue Finch Films has boarded international sales, excluding North America, on LGBTQ+ body horror “Swallowed.”
The film is directed by Carter Smith, known for cult horror film “The Ruins.” It follows two childhood friends, Benjamin and Dom, who are on the verge of being separated as the former is leaving rural Maine for Los Angeles. Dom has a plan to send Benjamin off with a pocketful of cash — all they have to do is deliver a package across the border. But things spiral wildly out of control when the package turns out to be something far more dangerous than they could have ever imagined.
“Swallowed” has played at the Overlook Film Festival and Fantasia, and is due to play at Arrow Video FrightFest and Fantastic Fest. The film stars Jena Malone (“The Neon Demon”), Cooper Koch (“They/Them”), Mark Patton (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2) and debutant Jose Colon.

Filmmaker Carter Smith started his career doing fashion photography before successfully making the switch to directing horror films. Smith is known for the body horror driven film The Ruins (2008) as well as Jamie Marks is Dead (2014). Written and directed by Carter, his new film Swallowed premiered at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival and brilliantly showcases cringe-inducing body horror by utilizing creepy crawly effects, a standout cast, and an intriguing story. By far, the highlight of Swallowed is an emotional and magnetic performance from Cooper Koch.
Koch stars as Benjamin, a gay, aspiring porn actor who is about to move to Los Angeles. He is spending his last night at home out drinking and dancing with his best friend Dom, played by Jose Colon. After Dom tells Benjamin he needs to make a quick stop on the way home, the friends go to Dom’s cousin’s house where they meet Alice,...

Dom (Jose Colon) and Benjamin (Cooper Koch) are best friends. It’s one of those really intense friendships which comes before almost everything else. It might almost be love, but Dom is straight and they’re not sleeping together, and Ben has never directly acknowledged the strength of his feelings. This may be part of the reason why he has decided to go away. It’s also because he has a big opportunity awaiting him. He’s going to Los Angeles, where he has a job as a porn star.
That phrase, ‘porn star’, makes them both laugh. It has a certain glamour to it. but Ben realises that it’s not all going to be fun and games, letting strangers do intimate things to his body for money. Dom is worried about him. He has always been his protector, fending off a hostile world, so before Ben goes away,...

"You don't want them hatching in there, okay?" Oh hell no. An early promo trailer has debuted for an indie horror thriller titled Swallowed, the latest from filmmaker Carter Smith. Not to be confused with the other body horror film Swallow, with Haley Bennett, this one is a bit different. The film follows two best friends on their final night together in a small town, with a nightmare of drugs, bugs and horrific intimacy. Oh boy, this sounds gross. "Dripping with blood and pus, Swallowed is queer body horror with all the naked flesh and shocking violations of a classic midnight movie." I definitely don't want to know what's in those drug packets that are actually egg sacs. Eww. Starring Jena Malone, Mark Patton, Cooper Koch, and Jose Colon. The film is premiering at a few genre festivals this summer, hence the teaser before it debuts. Enjoy. Here's the promo...
