The Fraggles are back! This past weekend, Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock returned to Apple TV+ for its second season. Red, Mokey, Gobo, Wembley, Boober, and all the wonderful little – and not-so-little – creatures have returned to entertain the young and old. Fraggles have long since been a part of many a fan’s lives. And with the new series, delightfully cheery creatures are brought back for some music and magic. As an old-school fan, seeing that the Fraggles have returned to bring joy to a new generation’s hearts is fantastic.
For this fan, I had the privilege of speaking to “Mokey” and “Red” and meeting a few of these adorable creatures in person. First, I had a fun little conversation with Mokey (puppeteered by Donna Kimbal) and Red (puppeteered by Karen Prell). Sometimes, an “interview” can be a lot of fun. And chatting with Fraggles is about as enjoyable as you can get.

Exclusive: The Jim Henson Company and Marblemedia are using comedy to put children’s mental health under the microscope.
The pair has teamed on Felix, a live-action comedy about a boy, his family and his ‘feels’ — five original characters created by Fraggle Rock and Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio maker Jim Henson’s Creature Shop that manifest his larger-than-life emotions.
The emotions live in his house, follow him to school and eat his snacks, but once he joins a school for neurodivergent kids, he learns to live with them.
The ten-part series was created by Miklos Perlus and inspired by his neurodivergent son. It will run to ten parts and aim to “break new ground by debunking the stereotypes and stigmatisation around neurodiversity and mental health challenges among children.”
No network is attached at this stage.

Children today have more reasons to be stressed than young people did a generation or two ago, according to executives on the forefront of kids TV programming. Climate change, pandemics, racial reckoning, school violence and the onslaught of confusing social media messaging are raising anxiety among young viewers. However, these executives say the answer is not to protect kids from knotty problems, but to use entertainment to educate, demystify and give children a chance to become empowered by exposure to problem-solving from a safe distance. $bp("Brid_45725416", {"id":"21259","width":"936","height":"527","video":"961791"}); Halle Stanford, president of TV for the Jim Henson Company, said the new landscape for kids was top of mind as the company worked on the reboot of the nearly 40-year-old series “Fraggle Rock,” now reinvented as “Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock” on Apple TV+. “When Jim Henson had originally conceived of ‘Fraggle Rock,...

Long after selling the Muppets to Disney and the “Sesame Street” characters to Sesame Workshop, the Jim Henson Co. is busy creating new fare via originals — such as a live-action fantasy series in early development with “The Walking Dead” star Norman Reedus — and existing IP that the company still owns, like “Fraggle Rock.”
In the case of Reedus, the star has worked with creatures for years, fighting zombies on the long-running AMC hit. Now, he’s creating an entirely new universe of characters by teaming up with Brian and Wendy Froud (“The Dark Crystal”) for a project in the works for Henson. The primetime adventure series, intended for a family audience, will feature an entirely new universe of creatures created by the Frouds.
“Norman Reedus, the Frouds [who will create the show’s creatures] and the Jim Henson Company coming together to create a show is the mashup of my dreams,” says Halle Stanford, president of TV at The Jim Henson Company.

How Jim Henson Company Reimagines Classics Like ‘Fraggle Rock’ and ‘Harriet the Spy’ for Modern Kids
The company behind the Muppets have been busy re-creating familiar projects from our childhoods — from “Fraggle Rock” to “Harriet the Spy” — for a new generation of kids that takes into account how much things have changed over the years. “How do you keep growing the legacy brand?” Jim Henson Company president of television Halle Stanford told TheWrap in a recent interview. “You just keep going back to what it’s all about. Jim Henson said: ‘If you’re going to put a child in front of a television, you have to have something to say.’ But kids transform, kids change and families need change.” For Stanford and her team, that’s meant relaunching the 40-year-old cult hit “Fraggle Rock” in a new Apple TV+ series that targets stressed-out kids of today and helps them negotiate the social and environmental issues complicating their world in 2022. “From 40 years to now we all need to feel connected,...

The series, which was a prequel to Jim Henson's 1983 movie, won an Emmy for outstanding children's program just days ago.
"We can confirm that there will not be an additional season of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance," said executive producer Lisa Henson.
"We know fans are eager to learn how this chapter of The Dark Crystal saga concludes, and we'll look for ways to tell that story in the future."
"Our company has a legacy of creating rich and complex worlds that require technical innovation, artistic excellence, and masterful storytelling," the statement continues.
"Our history also includes productions that are enduring, often finding and growing their audience over time and proving again and again that fantasy and science fiction genres reflect eternal messages and truths that are always relevant.

Things just got dark for The Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance — Netflix has cancelled the prequel series after one season, io9 reports.
The Age of Resistance was a prequel to Jim Henson’s 1982 film The Dark Crystal, which relied heavily on puppets and animatronics. That film introduced Thra and its inhabitants, among them the peaceful Gelflings and the villainous Skeksis, who draw their power from the titular crystal.

The streamer has canceled its fantasy puppet series “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” after only a single season, Variety has confirmed.
The show was a prequel series to the original 1982 Jim Henson film, which tells the story of a group of young Gelflings who discover that their overlords — the evil, hideous Skeksis — are duplicitous and plan to consume their subjects’ life energy via the dark crystal in order to fuel their own.
News of the cancelation comes mere days after the show won an Emmy for best children’s series.

Get your magnifying glasses and spy notebooks ready because “Harriet the Spy” is back. Apple TV+ has greenlit a new animated series based on the tween spy created in 1964 by author Louise Fitzhugh. “Booksmart” star Beanie Feldstein will be the fiercely independent Harriet, while Jane Lynch will provide the voice for her stalwart nanny ‘Ole Golly.’
Like the original book series, the new animated feature will be set in 1960s New York and follow Harriet M. Welsch as she pursues her dreams of being a writer by documenting everything she sees. Along the way she’ll butt heads with her school’s mean girl, the snobby Marion Hawthorne (voiced by Lacey Chabert).
The series itself is a dream for ’90s kids especially, as it will be written and executive produced by Will McRobb, who co-created the inaugural Nickelodeon series “The Adventures of Pete and Pete.” “Harriet the Spy” was originally...

John Tartaglia is the first to admit that he’s a big fan of “Fraggle Rock.”
Like a really big fan.
The puppeteer was getting ready to go leave his Jim Henson Co. office to start working from home due to the coronavirus outbreak when he called the company’s president of television Halle Stanford.
“I had been keeping the Fraggles in my office and I called her and said, ‘Should I take the Fraggles home with me?’” Tartaglia tells Variety. “I know this sounds silly, but I just felt we should bring them home because I couldn’t stand the thought of these incredibly loved characters sitting alone in the office for so long.”
Little did anyone know that two weeks later, as the Henson team was brainstorming new projects that could address the pandemic, Stanford would receive a call to reboot the series.

Netflix has dropped the first teaser for “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” and now we’re even more terrified of the Jim Henson-created fantasy world Thra than we were when watching the original 1982 film.
The 10-episode prequel series, set to launch on the streaming service Aug. 30, stars Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nathalie Emmanuel, as three Gelfling heroes — Rian, Brea and Deet, respectively — who learn of a villainous force called The Darkening in the preview video above.
Here’s the official description for “Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” per Netflix: Based on “The Dark Crystal,” Jim Henson’s groundbreaking 1982 feature film, “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” tells a new epic story, set many years before the events of the movie, and realized using classic puppetry with cutting edge visual effects. The world of Thra is dying. The Crystal of Truth is at the heart of Thra, a source of untold power.

The Jim Henson Company has acquired the rights to Stacey O’Brien’s bestselling memoir Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl, with Dolphin Tale co-writer Karen Janszen attached to pen the adaptation.
Wesley recounts the true story of young Caltech biologist Stacey O’Brien. In 1985, Stacey is asked by her mentor to raise Wesley, a baby barn owl with a wing injury that will prevent it from surviving in the wild. What’s intended to be an objective study of owl behavior blossoms into a unique, hilarious and incredible story of discovery, persistence and love spanning 19 years.
Described as part Marley & Me, part Fly Away Home, Wesley dives inside the one-of-a-kind relationship between “an owl and his girl” and redefines expectations of what it means to love, to survive and, ultimately, to become whole. When O’Brien develops her own life-threatening illness, the...
