Every year numerous films are overlooked, underrated, and lost in the shuffle. 2023 was no exception. Several sci-fi movies with merit failed to garner attention, find an audience, or receive a fair appraisal. Such outcomes can be attributed to market saturation with similar themes and concepts, exemplified by this year's surplus of films centered around AI or featuring talented actors who lack significant box office appeal. Alternatively, a film may be flawed, resulting in mixed reviews and audience reactions, yet still possessing commendable qualities.
For the purposes of this list, "underrated" refers to sci-fi films that received relatively mixed or poor responses from both critics and audiences, with a focus on those that lacked significant attention or acclaim. We'll review the notable qualities of these films and explore the reasons behind their inadequate recognition, whether it's one of Marvel's unfairly maligned sequels or a quirky, futuristic sci-fi spin on conceiving a child,...

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods made quite the name for themselves when "A Quiet Place" hit theaters in 2018. As the writers of the film, they had a massive hit on their hands, and one that has gone on to spawn an entire franchise. But they've since moved on to directing as well, with their latest movie an equally ambitious sci-fi feature in the form of "65." Starring Adam Driver in the lead role, the duo finally gave modern audiences a big dinosaur movie that was divorced from the "Jurassic Park" franchise (read our review here). And for those who would like to see that action unfold on their TV from the comfort of home, we've got some good news for you.

Adam Driver has become a household name in Hollywood in recent years, with his memorable roles in popular movies such as the Star Wars series and Marriage Story. The actor is known for his intense performances and ability to bring complex characters to life on the big screen. However, his latest project, 65, presented a unique challenge for Driver, as he recently revealed the most “humiliating” part of filming.

Some actors just seem to have that hard-to-describe “it factor,” and Driver is one of them. The Marriage Story star has become a familiar face in movies that rely heavily on CGI. For instance, his role as Kylo Ren in the Star Wars series involved a great deal of green screen work and visual effects.

This article contains spoilers for "65."
The moment "65" was finally unveiled, it aimed to fill a hole Hollywood had long overlooked — movies about dinosaurs without the title "Jurassic" in them. The first trailer was very compelling, needing only the sight of Adam Driver shooting dinosaurs with a space gun to create interest
Now that the whole film is out, it is actually rather good! The film delivers a good blend of bonkers concepts and a heartfelt story of survival. Driver carries the whole film on his back, doing his own "The Last of Us" impression of a man caring for a child in a hostile, desolate wasteland. Likewise, there are enough scenes of Driver fighting dinosaurs to be crowd-pleasing and raucous, but not so many that it becomes a direct-to-video sci-fi action movie.

We should all take a moment to appreciate that, in 2023, a movie about a bear hopped up on cocaine took social media by storm, a bonkers masterpiece about the multiverse won best picture, and we got a movie about Adam Driver fighting dinosaurs. Who says cinema is dead?
"65" centers on a space pilot named Mills (Driver), who hails from the distant planet Somaris. On the way home from an exploratory mission, his ship is bombarded by asteroids and crash lands on Earth ... 65 million years ago. With the only other survivor, Koa (Arianna Greenblatt), Mills journeys across treacherous prehistoric terrain to reach his escape pod, dodging carnivorous dinosaurs and racing against an impending meteor strike the whole way.
Critics have been less than kind to "65," but the mere fact that we have a big-budget film about dinosaurs that's not focused on Chris Pratt or weaponized locusts is a cause for celebration.

If you weren't aware going in that "65" hailed from the co-writers of "A Quiet Place," you'd pick up on the parallels quickly enough. There are grieving parents; an emotional story about family; a father figure and a surrogate daughter who often communicate non-verbally; and a whole lot of scary creatures itching to hunt down and kill the heroes. The big difference? This time, the creatures aren't blind aliens with super-sensitive hearing. They're a bunch of dinosaurs who all look and act like the Sharptooth from "The Land Before Time," be they tall as a house or tiny as a (still rather large) mouse.

Adam Driver has played many characters: a lightsaber-wielding antihero, an evil knight, a missionary, a bus driver and poet, a stand-up comedian ... you get the idea. Driver is a performer who likes to take risks — and now he's playing a guy who shoots laser guns and fights dinosaurs. Yeah, you read that right.
In "65," Scott Beck and Bryan Woods' sci-fi action thriller, Adam Driver plays Mills, a pilot who experiences a catastrophic crash on an unknown planet and discovers he's stranded on Earth ... in the past, 65 million years ago. He has one chance at a rescue, and along with another survivor, he must find his way across unknown territory teeming with larger-than-life prehistoric creatures that are dangerous, to say the least. The film delivers on dinosaur scares (you can read /Film's full review here) and monster action, and Driver describes it as a "father-daughter movie" with characters that are "three-dimensional.

Adam Driver is undoubtedly one of the most talented actors working today, perhaps even the most talented, yet all that talent can’t help save 65 from being one of the dullest films in recent years.
In what feels like a straight-to-streaming film, Adam Driver plays a space explorer (Mills) that crash lands on an unknown planet. We quickly discover he’s actually stranded on Earth, 65 million years ago, something the film expects to show us as some big shock reveal, maybe it would work if it wasn’t plastered all over the marketing for the film. With only one chance at rescue, Mills and the only other survivor, Koa (Ariana Greenblatt) must make their way across the unknown terrain riddled with dangerous prehistoric creatures. Did you happen to catch cinema's most prestigious event this past weekend? I'm referring, of course, to the release of the dinosaur-themed thriller "65," from writers and directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods ("A Quiet Place"). The very solid B-movie (you can find /Film's review by Sarah Milner here) certainly delivered on its premise, which transported Adam Driver and young actor Ariana Greenblatt to the Earth, 65 million years in the past. To say anything else would ruin too many of the surprises for those who have yet to enjoy it for themselves, but rest assured that the film pays off on all the dino-heavy spectacle that any fan could possibly ask for.
Impressively, the film's relatively stripped-down filmmaking meant that audiences needed something altogether more tactile than could be provided by, say, the wildly expensive "Jurassic World" movies. As Beck and Woods have previously discussed in an interview with /Film's Bj Colangelo,...

Adam Driver battles prehistoric terrors in the Sam Raimi-produced 65, which just debuted in theaters over the weekend. Yes, Sony’s high-concept/mid-budget action-horror movie arrived in theaters on the very same day as Scream VI, the latter film topping the domestic box office charts with a $44.5 million weekend. In third place on the charts, you’ll find 65.
Released in 3,405 theaters here in the United States, 65 opened with $12.3 million domestically over the weekend. Worldwide, the film’s current total is $20 million.
The reported production budget for 65 is $45 million, which means it likely has to pass $100 million in order to start turning a profit. We’ll keep you posted as more numbers come in.
Meagan wrote in her review of 65, “The potential for what could’ve been had 65 fully embraced the absurdities of its plot is what lingers once it’s over.”

Adam Driver is in full-blown solider mode in "65." The new prehistoric sci-fi thriller, which was written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (the co-writers of "A Quiet Place" and the directors of "Haunt"), poses the question of what would happen if, essentially, a human armed with futuristic weaponry did battle with dinosaurs from Earth's distant past. In her review for /Film, Sarah Milner wrote that "65" delivers when it comes to scares and action, but feels a little derivative of other sci-fi tentpoles -- especially (and unsurprisingly) "Jurassic Park," although there are also shades of "The Last of Us" and the "Alien" franchise.

65 is one of those films where you can almost imagine the filmmakers, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, together, in a room throwing ideas around, fresh off the success of A Quiet Place, ready to bring a new, ambitious narrative to life. Almost like students at University, there’s a playful wonder, as you can’t help but admire their enthusiasm and sense of risk. Though with this particular story, it feels almost as though it was instead pitched by Brad Pitt’s Floyd in True Romance, in between hits of his bong. “How about… a spaceman crash lands into prehistoric Earth?”
That man in question is Mills (Adam Driver), who waves goodbye to his young daughter to set off on a mission into outer space, only to encounter a devastating collision meaning he has to crash land in an unknown planet. Until he soon realises, that planet is Earth,...

“Scream VI” slashed through the competition at the Thursday box office, taking in $5.7 million in preview showings. The Adam Driver-starring sci-fi thriller “65” followed suit with $1.2 million.
The latest installment in the beloved horror franchise opens Friday in approximately 3,675 domestic locations. Previews took place Thursday evening at 3,125 theaters starting at 5:30 p.m. The Paramount and Spyglass Media Group film is expected to earn $35 to $40 million this weekend, possibly besting “Scream V,” which opened to $30 million. For a comparison, that film grossed $3.5 million at the Thursday box office in January 2022. It went on to make $81.6 million in the U.S. and $137.7 million worldwide against a $25 million budget.
Bolstered by a starry cast and stellar early reviews (79% from critics and 93% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes), “Scream VI” is aiming to beat the franchise box office record, currently held by “Scream 3” with $34.7 million ($60.3 million in today’s currency).

The 2023 sci-fi thriller "65" is one of those non-stop, runaway-train action flicks that's best enjoyed with the lights turned low, the bass turned up, and your brain turned off. That might sound like a jab there at the end (and maybe on some level it is) but it would be remiss of me to characterize this particular film any other way. High-concept science fiction this is not. You will see the afterglow of smarter, better movies — a hint of "Minority Report" here, a glimmer of "Prometheus" there — but it doesn't really matter. This movie has set out to give you a survivalist spaceman Dad shooting dinosaurs to protect a surrogate daughter figure — and damn it, it delivers that in spades.
"65" is the brainchild of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods ("A Quiet Place"), who both wrote and directed. Sam Raimi serves as producer and, in some of the film's more gruesome moments,...

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the writers behind A Quiet Place and writers/directors of Haunt, seek to resuscitate the long-dormant horror adventure of yesteryear with 65, complete with survival elements, hostile creatures on a foreign planet, and even deadly quicksand. Only the foreign planet is Earth, 65 million years ago, and the hostile creatures are indigenous dinosaurs. That’s terrible news for a pair of travelers who’ve crash landed there. All of that should make for a feature far more thrilling than it is.

Plot: An astronaut (Adam Driver) transporting a cargo of people to their new home crash-lands on Earth sixty-five million years ago. Faced with the dangerous terrain and a whole lot of dinosaurs, he must try to recover an escape ship while protecting the crew’s sole survivor, a young girl (Ariana Greenblatt).
Review: 65 is a decent middle-of-the-road action movie. While it’s undeniably underwhelming, given that it comes from the guys who hatched the idea for A Quiet Place and stars the great Adam Driver, there’s enough action jammed into the scant ninety-minute running time to merit a ticket. But, it tries to do too much, namely by indulging in some world-building it doesn’t have the time for.
When I first saw the trailer for Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ 65, I assumed that Adam Driver’s character was a human who somehow ended up in the past.

Despite its position as one of the seeming few big-scale “original” sci-fi films to compete with franchises, sequels and reboots for box office real estate, “65” is Frankensteinian at best. Cobbled together from (admittedly some of the best) parts of “Jurassic Park,” “The Descent,” “Armageddon” and more, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ post-“A Quiet Place” level-up too strongly resembles its forebears to break new, much less particularly interesting ground. Yet anchored by another in a series of committed performances from Adam Driver and an ensemble of suitably menacing prehistoric beasts that chase him for just over 90 minutes, Beck and Woods’ adventure delivers requisite thrills even if its creativity seems stuck in the distant cinematic past.

Spoiler alert: Dinosaurs and humans didn’t exist on Earth at the same time. This presents a problem for filmmakers looking to make a dinosaur movie with human/dino interaction, at least in terms of historical accuracy. One option is to ignore reality entirely, as One Million Years B.C. did. Another is to bring dinosaurs back to life, a la Jurassic Park and its many sequels. Or, you could have the characters go back in time, which is the solution delivered by the directing-screenwriting team of Scott Beck and Bryan Wood with 65, in which Adam Driver plays an astronaut from another planet who crashes on this planet 65 million years ago.
Or maybe the other planet also existed 65 million years ago, which would account for a key plot element. Driver’s character, Mills, has to undergo the grueling two-year space mission to pay for medical care for his daughter (Chloe Coleman...

65 Directors Beck/Woods Reveal The Secret Of Making An Effective Monster Movie [Exclusive Interview]
It's hard to believe that the film "65," short for "65 Million Years Ago," is a real movie. Produced by genre legend Sam Raimi, the newest feature film from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods stars Adam Driver and Ariana Greenblatt as two human-like beings from beyond the galaxy who crash land on an unexplored alien planet. Despite their advanced technology and space-age weaponry, these are not beings from the future, but 65 million years ago. The planet they crash onto turns out to be our own mother Earth.
The result is a sci-fi adventure film that sounds like something straight out of a child's imagination. Driver's spaceman pilot Mills has to shoot lasers at Cretaceous-era dinosaurs in the hopes of getting him and Greenblatt's young Koa back home to safety. The first thing to know about “65,” a new film in which Adam Driver plays a spaceman who fights dinosaurs, is that it is not actually about time travel. Driver’s character, the single-named Mills, does not go through some portal and land back in prehistory. No, he’s actually an alien from an advanced civilization whose ship is downed by an asteroid — can you see where this is going? — leaving him stranded on Earth.
It’s a fun idea with lots of goofy potential that is completely squandered in the execution from filmmakers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, best known for coming up with the idea for eventual box office smash “A Quiet Place.” What should be a movie that relishes in its silliness is instead played completely straight. Aside from the Jurassic Park/World franchise, there isn’t an awful lot of filmmakers with the courage to delve into the world of the dinosaurs. But if anyone is going to try and craft something new and unique, A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods are a steady bet, and they’ve brought the prehistoric to life in 65, helped along, of course, by a fine leading turn by Adam Driver.

65 star Adam Driver is all about consistency.
He prides himself on doing as much of his own stunt work as a production will allow, but it’s not because he wants to impress anyone. It’s because he wants his characters’ physicality to remain consistent throughout any given film, and his latest sci-fi thriller, 65, from A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, was certainly no exception. Driver plays Commander Mills, who crash lands his spacecraft on prehistoric Earth, and together with one other survivor, Ariana Greenblatt’s Koa, the duo must overcome dinosaurs, the elements and a communication barrier to hopefully find rescue.
While 65 was easily the most physical job of the 15-year-old Greenblatt’s career, Driver still puts Martin Scorsese’s Silence above it, though for a very different reason.
“[Silence’s weight loss] was a long thing to maintain for four months, but 65 was definitely really physical,” Driver tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Filmmakers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods like to play with language. Their screenplay for the acclaimed sci-fi horror film "A Quiet Place," is almost entirely without spoken dialogue and features a main cast of just four people. The duo's new film, "65," follows a similar route, pairing the hardened spaceship pilot Mills, played by Adam Driver, with the young Koa, played by Ariana Greenblatt, and pitting them against prehistoric dinosaurs. In an exclusive interview with /Film's Bj Colangelo, Beck and Woods stated that Greenblatt had to translate all of her memorized English dialogue into an alien language to create the dramatic communication gap between Mills and Koa.
Constructing a fictional language, or "conlanging" as it's called, for film is a more complicated affair than just spouting gibberish. Language consultants have to keep in mind the way the spoken sounds affect the perceptions of both the actors and the audience, which is...

At 15, 65 star Ariana Greenblatt is already an old pro.
She’s had a varied and prolific career as a child performer, and she’s especially well-versed in the art of acting opposite CG characters, whether that’s Josh Brolin’s Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Sam Rockwell’s gorilla in The One and Only Ivan or the titular monsters in Love and Monsters. In her latest film, 65, from A Quiet Place writers Beck and Woods, Greenblatt plays Koa, the only other survivor of Commander Mills’ (Adam Driver) interstellar expedition that somehow crash lands on Earth during the prehistoric era of dinosaurs.
So Greenblatt’s ability to nail looks of awe and wonderment, as well as sheer terror, came in quite handy when asked to look at a stick and imagine it’s a T-Rex.

Adam Driver’s adventure sci-fi film 65 has joined a spate of upcoming Hollywood films in securing release dates in China. The film, which opens in North America on Friday, will unfurl three weeks later in the massive China theatrical market on March 31.
The release of U.S. movies in China slowed to a trickle last year amid the country’s harsh Covid Zero pandemic control policies and an uptick in nationalist sentiment surrounding high-profile Chinese Communist Party political events. But the regulatory tide began to turn late in 2022, starting with the release of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water in December (it went on to earn $250 million locally). Since then, although Washington-Beijing diplomatic relations are at a nadir, the flow of U.S. movie product into China has begun to resume a level of pre-pandemic normalcy. One of the trailers that seemingly went under the radar during this year's Super Bowl commercial slot is the upcoming sci-fi film starring Adam Driver, 65.
Here's everything you need to know:
What Is It about?
Following a devastating crash on a seemingly unfamiliar planet, pilot Mills finds himself stranded on Earth during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 65 million years in the past. With little hope of rescue but one last opportunity, Mills and Koa, the only other survivor, embark on a treacherous journey across an unfamiliar landscape teeming with dangerous prehistoric beasts (dinosaurs!), as they fight to stay alive. This epic tale chronicles their desperate struggle to survive in a time long before humanity, and the incredible obstacles they must overcome to stay alive.
