Ian Fleming is perhaps best known for being the creator of James Bond and the series of novels that center the character, but he's also the mind behind the 1964 children's novel "Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang: The Magical Car," which was subsequently turned into the beloved, Academy Award-nominated fantasy movie musical and later, a stage musical. The story focuses on the Potts family, namely, siblings Jeremy and Jemima, who desperately try to set up their widowed inventor father Caractacus with a beautiful woman named Truly Scrumptious. And people had the audacity to make fun of the character names in "The Hunger Games" series? Tsk. Tsk. During a day at the beach, Caractacus tells the children a fantastical tale about the villainous Baron Bomburst, the tyrant ruler of the land of Vulgaria, and his attempts to steal their magical family car, the titular Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Palm Springs is where one goes to be seen; neighboring Rancho Mirage, well, not so much. That’s why many A-List Hollywood stars pulled up sticks in the mid-20th century, moving from Palm Springs — and L.A. — to the more discreet Rancho Mirage, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a city this year.
Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Lucille Ball, Red Skelton, at least one Marx brother, Bing Crosby, and even the guy who played the wizard in The Wizard of Oz, MGM contracted character actor Frank Morgan, lived there. The retired Rms Queen Mary docked in Long Beach, California is considered one of the most haunted locations in the world — which only somewhat shines through in Gary Shore’s Haunting of the Queen Mary. Any wishes to relive Dark Castle Entertainment levels of production design in Ghost Ship won’t be fulfilled, but that said, Haunting of the Queen Mary is more successful than its brushed-under-the-rug release undersells. Shore and co-writer Tom Vaughan channel the Queen Mary’s grave history for a supernatural infestation that spans decades, complete with atmospheric haunts akin to what’s accomplished in remakes of Thir13en Ghosts or House on Haunted Hill. Proper spookiness prevails, even though the over two-hour length gunks up the film’s gears with subplots that slow momentum.
Alice Eve stars as Anne Calder, who pitches Queen Mary’s Captain Bittner (Dorian Lough) on a virtual 3D tour experience to resurrect the ship’s reputation.

Alice Eve battles paranormal spirits in the latest trailer for Haunting of the Queen Mary, a supernatural horror mystery that has two families violently entangled when sailing aboard the real-life ocean liner on Halloween night in 1938 and the present day.
As Erin, played by Eve, and husband Patrick (Joel Fry) board the infamous ship with their young son Lukas, played by Lenny Rush, their voyage comes to resemble, in mystery and violence, the experience of another family that sailed aboard the namesake ship in 1938.
As Erin begins to see the haunted ghosts the ocean liner holds from its dark past, she and her husband realize there’s only one way out for them — into the ship’s depths where violent secrets are revealed.

Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday.
Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category.
Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Among the seven music categories, a surprising number of first-time nominees was recognized, and more than one-fourth of all the nominees in the five composition and songwriting categories are women, another positive sign of change in the Hollywood musical landscape.

ABC still has some decisions to make on its scripted slate.
The network has yet to make final calls on renewals for comedy Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.
It comes after ABC passed on four of its pilots: Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.
Deadline understands that ABC is unlikely to make all of these decisions until the writers strike is over and the future of the fall season is clearer. A decision on Home Economics may come first out of the three.

In the 1950s daytime programming became extremely popular, with game shows and soap operas becoming a staple in American households. Although the Emmy Awards had been established in 1949, the categories were limited for the first few years, and performers from all genres, and from both daytime and nighttime programs, were lumped together in one or two acting categories, with daytime performers usually left out.
In 1962 Mary Stuart became the only soap opera actress nominated for a Primetime Emmy, for her role as Joanne Gardner on “Search for Tomorrow.” In 1968 a category for Best Achievement in Daytime Programming was attempted, but judges decided that no one was deserving. Outraged pioneers of the genre, such as writer Agnes Nixon and “General Hospital” star John Beradino, lobbied for recognition of daytime television. In 1972 the first Emmy Awards specifically honoring daytime programming were bestowed to “The Doctors” for Best Daytime Drama and to Mary Fickett...

Ke Huy Quan has opened up about his struggle to find roles following his childhood success in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies.
The Vietnamese-American actor landed his first on-screen credit in the first outing of the Harrison Ford-led franchise in 1984. Shortly after, he appeared in the late director Richard Donner’s 1985 adventure classic.
In the decades proceeding, Quan was forced into a career hiatus because of the lack of roles for Asian actors.

Shore has now responded to Kimmel’s jab, saying: “We love to hate people when they’re on top.”
“People wanted to smash me down and they did,” the actor, 55, told Page Six. “I was always nice to everyone,...

No matter how zoomed-out the view, you can only fit so many mountain ranges, so many massive armies, and so many dirty hobbit fingernails into a single frame. In Middle Earth, it’s the musical score that can always go further, capturing emotion, character turmoil, and the awe and wonder of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world in a way that (sometimes literally) echoes far beyond what we can see. The way music works with the image often makes the best scenes out of Tolkien’s stories feel as rousingly epic as they do and why, in both the Peter Jackson film trilogy and Prime Video’s new television series, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” scenes that are just bits of landscape catching on fire (or flooding and catching on fire) pack such a punch.

Noted Tolkien expert Stephen Colbert was a little bummed during his monologue Monday with the news that Italy’s new Prime Minister is apparently really, really into “The Lord of the Rings.” And in explaining why it doesn’t make sense for extreme right wingers to love Tolkien’s legendarium, he nerded out so much even his own camera started to drift off.
“The part that hurts the most for me, personally,” Colbert said after explaining the situation, “is that Meloni, who leads a party that has often been described as neo-fascist, claims to be a big Tolkien fan who used to dress up as a hobbit.”
“No! No! Or, as they say in Italian: No. Don’t you ruin the ‘Lord of the Rings.’ No self-respecting adult dresses like a hobbit. Unless you’re on the cover of Entertainment Weekly.”
Of course, at this point in the monologue, the...

It’s not like Brendan Fraser hasn’t had to overcome adversity before. After all, his very first starring role came in a Pauly Shore vehicle (Encino Man) that was savaged by critics. But he overcame that shaky start and went on to become a big star in the 1990s and early 2000s, especially when he had the starring role in the Mummy films. This comeback is different, though. After a theatrical dry spell in which he’s gone more than a decade without appearing in a box office hit, Fraser is receiving critical acclaim — and even a strong Oscar buzz — for his role in Darren Aranofsky’s The Whale. When the film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, it got a six-minute standing ovation from the audience. Speaking at a press conference at that festival, Fraser had high praise for the character he plays in the film, saying...

Summer is a time for light reading. Well, in theory. If you are a hardcore film lover it’s also a time for deep dives into complicated classics like Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Zodiac, laser-eyed explorations of the early works of David Cronenberg, and loving odes to the insanity of Cannon Films.
Our latest column has all these and more, starting with the most eagerly awaited cineamtic novel of the year. And for other essential cinema reads, visit David Bordwell’s website, which now offers a collection of books written by him and Kristin Thompson for free. Take advantage of these, my friends. And while it is not available for purchase, I urge you to do some digging to find Neon’s Petite Maman: A Story by Céline Sciamma, a 32-page illustrated children’s book of Sciamma’s film lovingly illustrated by Desi Moore (with design by...

In one of the most anticipated panels of the weekend, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power kickstarted Day Two of Comic-Con to the fanfare of thousands of attendees in Hall H, who were eagerly awaiting more information on what to expect in the latest iteration of their beloved franchise.
Surprising much of the crowd, The Rings of Power panel was hosted by none other than J.R.R. Tolkien superfan Stephen Colbert, who spent an hour and a half showcasing a near-encyclopedic knowledge of the Rings universe, ribbing fans about...

Amazon brought “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” to Comic-Con on Friday, offering fans in Hall H an extended preview of what their expensive new series is all about — and a surprise orchestral performance.
The panel began with a group of musicians assembled onstage, conducted by series composer Bear McCreary (“The Walking Dead”) as they performed brand new music from the upcoming series (complete with a rockin’ violinist). “Lord of the Rings” fans know music is key to the series, so Amazon wanted to stress “The Rings of Power” won’t be without its own sonic identity.
The performance gave way to a surprise appearance by noted Tolkien superfan/scholar (and “Late Show” host) Stephen Colbert, who took on moderating duties for the panel but spent the first few minutes explaining to the audience why there’s so much story left to be told in this show...

The score for Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy is one of the few soundtracks I listen to over and over again. Howard Shore's work is gorgeous and moody, and immediately sends me right back to Middle-earth. When the upcoming Prime Video prequel series "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" was announced, everyone wondered who would be doing the music for it. Would Shore return? We may be journeying to thousands of years before the films, to the Second Age of Middle-earth, but it's still the same world, still based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien,...

As San Diego Comic-Con gets underway, the fan boy crowd can revel in Amazon Studios confirming what Deadline told you a long time ago: Howard Shore, 3-time Oscar winner for his work on The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has returned to compose the original main title theme for its blockbuster 465 million series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. At the same time, Emmy-winner Bear McCreary has composed the full episodic series score.
McCreary is known for his world-building scores and use of innovative musical approaches in the worlds of television, film, and video games. He turns that toward a series that Amazon describes as the Second Age of Middle-earth as written in the novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. Over the past year, McCreary has recorded and composed hours of music for the score, weaving together his original themes into a sonic tapestry for a full symphonic orchestra,...

Paramount+ is forging a UK version of MTV U.S. matchmaking series Are You The One? from Geordie Shore producer Lime Pictures.
The show will debut on the streamer’s UK platform and MTV channels outside the U.S. later this year.
Hosted by British presenter Joelah Noble in the UK, the format follows 20 unlucky-in-love people who are scientifically matched with 10 of their fellow contributors. If they can uncover all 10, they could find both love and a cash prize, as they are paired with a potential match each week to take part in challenges and see if they gel.
All3Media-backed Lime, which also produced MTV’s True Love Or True Lies, is behind the UK version, which Kelly Bradshaw, SVP, MTV Entertainment Brands International, Paramount, said is proof of the network expanding its global formats strategy.
“MTV’s hit reality formats continue to travel and resonate with audiences around the world across platforms.
