Exclusive: More than two decades after The Animal was released, the Rob Schneider comedy movie is getting a sequel on Fox’s AVOD platform Tubi. Schneider is back and will reprise his starring role as Marvin Mange, a police evidence clerk whose behavior changed after he got animal parts transplanted following a critical injury. He also co-wrote the script, produces and will direct the sequel whose greenlight hinges on Fox finalizing a deal with the studio behind the original film, Revolution.
In keeping with the theme of the movie, the official logline for the sequel, tentatively titled The Animal 2, is as follows: Marvin Mange, now an old dog, needs to learn new tricks as he hunts down a new uber-animal with powers far beyond his own.
I hear in it, Marvin, now retired, gets into an accident and has to be put together again with new animal parts. He goes...

The Television Academy has ruled that Fox’s version of “Rent” can submit in the variety special (live) category at this year’s Emmy Awards, Variety has learned.
Originally the performance was set to be a truly live event on a Sunday night in January, but performer Brennin Hunt broke his foot during the previous evening’s performance and therefore was unable to perform the full choreography needed for the show to go on fully as planned. The performance at which he got injured was shot live-to-tape and was what ultimately made the broadcast — with the exception of the final act, for which production did switch over to a true live performance on Sunday. The final act had altered choreography from the original plan so that Hunt could sit on stage and sing, even though his foot was in a cast. The original Broadway cast of Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer...

Exclusive: Under CEO Vince Totino and President/COO Scott Hemming, Revolution Studios is five years into a strategy of building through derivative sequels, spinoffs and remakes, while continuing to focus on the distribution of its extensive existing library. At the same time, Revolution has turned away from risky theatrical investments to focus on the upside of proven IP in a vastly shifting marketplace. Totino and Hemming have been with Revolution for more than a decade, taking over the reins in 2014 after a major cash infusion from Fortress Investment Group. Three years later, the studio was acquired by Content Partners in a $400M deal. I recently sat down with the execs to discuss the evolution of Revolution.
Prior to the Fortress acquisition, the storied Revolution had become a financial disappointment after a promising start. When Joe Roth — a former studio exec at Disney and Fox — founded Revolution as a mini-major film...
