I thought I was safe to boldly pronounce my initial 2024 Tony Awards predictions, but then Sufjan Stevens appeared to stomp all over them. As David Buchanan and I convened to discuss where we thought the musical nominations were headed this season, news broke that Off-Broadway’s dreamy dance show “Illinoise” will transfer to the St. James Theatre just in time to compete at this year’s ceremony. The show, based on Stevens’ seminal album, has thrown our Tony predictions into disarray. Watch our full video slugfest above.
“Illinoise” marks the 15th new musical of the 2023-2024 season. That’s more new tuners than any Broadway season since 1975-1976. Theatergoers this year are indeed spoiled with a glut of new shows, but predicting the coveted Best Musical category has become a titanic task.

As soon as the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Award nominations were unveiled, our forum posters wasted no time voicing their brutally honest opinions regarding which performances were recognized and ignored. On the television side, our regular users (many of whom are industry insiders shielded by clever screen names) celebrated the inclusion of Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”), and the cast of “The Gilded Age” while heavily lamenting the snubs of Bomer’s cast mate, Jonathan Bailey, Jeremy Strong (“Succession”), and Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”).
Below is just a sampling of our readers’ unabashed reactions to the SAG Award nominees in nine TV categories. Take a look, then join in if you’re brave enough. The film and TV winners will be revealed live on Netflix on February 24. Gold Derby’s predictions center is open, so make your first picks right now.

Congratulations to our User Couverture for an outstanding score of 92.31% when predicting the 2023 Tony Awards winners on Sunday night. Our top scorer is actually tied with six people — our editor Sam Eckmann, contributor Jeffrey Kare, expert Wayman Wong (Talkin’ Broadway), Jroemer, John Tracey and dannym97— but has the better point score of 165,780 by using the two Super Bets (500 points each) wisely.
Almost 1,200 people worldwide predicted these Broadway champs with our top scorer getting 24 of 26 categories correct. In fact, the only two misses were for Costume Design (Play) and Sound Design (Musical). The ceremony was hosted by Oscar winner Ariana DeBose in New York City.

With just days to go before the 75th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday, June 12, Gold Derby’s trio of Broadway pundits gathered together to dish which shows are ahead in the race. Susan Haskins-Doloff and David Buchanan join me to hash out the 11 play categories, where “The Lehman Trilogy” dominates the race for new work while the popularity of five revivals muddy the tea leaves as to which classic will emerge victorious. Top top it off, a reduced number of eligible voters has thrown the race into chaos. Watch the full video slugfest above.
I suggest that “there’s a lot more opportunity for surprises” when it comes to the play categories, because we may have the lowest pool of eligible voters in modern Tony history. Broadway fans will remember that the Tony Awards recently instituted a virtual portal where every voter must log the performance they attended of every nominated production.
