Clare Foley on the set of The Changed
She’s one of the most exciting actresses of her generation, having burst onto the screen in 2012 as the little girl in Sinister and gone on to play Ivy Pepper in Gotham, as well as making appearances in Mistress America, Southpaw, Every Secret Thing and Orange Is The New Black. Now she’s starring in Michael Mongillo’s sinister tale of a group of people holding out against an existential threat, The Changed. In the run-up to its screening at Frightfest, I caught up with Clare Foley to find out how she managed to dodge the usual child actor trajectory and do so much interesting work.
The changed wait outside the house
“When I was in fourth grade, I got the role in Sinister, and after that I just had such a love for doing horror movies,” she says with a bright smile.

Time for another Frightfest 2017 interview as our host Stuart Wright talks to writer/director Michael Mongillo about his film Diane, which has it’s World Premiere on Frightfest’s opening night, Thursday August 24th.
Stephen King and Brian De Palma meet Gus Van Sant and Elmore Leonard when Steve, a disabled war veteran, discovers the dead body of beautiful singer Diane in his back yard. Soon his fascination with her photographic image has turned into an obsession in an audacious supernatural horror thriller telling a compelling and honest story about the human condition. The prime suspect in the puzzling crime, Steve is scrutinized by the police, hassled by Diane’s widower and attacked by self-righteous neighbours as the malevolent ghost of Diane begins to work a dark spell that leads to strange and startling revelations.

Horrifying parental abuse, racism, drug use and other issues swirl together in this potent dramatic concoction.

Actor Eric Balfour has been hired to turn his attentions to behind the camera and turn Jesus Hates Zombies, the graphic novel from Stephen Lindsay, into a feature-length movie from a script written by Michael Mongillo and Jason Alan Smith.
The graphic novel tells of a zombie plague taking over the world, as we've seen play out in movies, comics, games, and TV shows so many times now, but this time the creator himself is watching and doesn't like what he sees, so he once again sends Jesus back to Earth -- this time to throw down with the zombie horde.
As far as directing goes, Balfour has only taken part in a film called Do Not Disturb with four other directors. But you surely recognize him from his many acting roles over the years, which began with Kids Incorporated (remember that one?) and includes Six Feet Under, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,...

Got zombies? Have no fear, as long as you believe in Jesus, you’ll be saved. Or he’ll try to save you, anyway. “Skyline’s” Eric Balfour has signed on to direct “Jesus Hates Zombies”, a live-action film based on the comic book series by Stephen Lindsay. Michael Mongillo and Jason Alan Smith adapted the comic, which boasts this for a plot: In a not so distant future, zombies have overrun the earth. Fearing for the future of humanity, God sends his son Jesus Christ to save humanity. Upon returning, he finds that his powers are greatly diminished as they are tied to others’ faith in him. So he sets out to find the last remaining faithful and rally them to his cause. Along the way he comes across various friends including Mother Theresa, Elvis Presley, a stripper named King, and a time traveling Abraham Lincoln, who brings his own problem along.

TV actor and sometimes movie star, Eric Balfour, is set to direct a comic book adaptation of Stephen Lindsay's "Jesus Hates Zombies" according to Joblo.
Balfour had this to say about the project:
.It.s an honor to be a part of this project. It.s bold, unapologetic, and controversial. When I read the script I was blown away by how well the writers had given life to Stephen.s graphic novel. What most intrigued me about the project was it.s heart and message. There is plenty of comedy and action in the script but what I wasn.t expecting and am most excited about bringing to the screen is it.s message of love and faith. I love when a script can break the mold and offer something unique and I.m going to work my ass off to honor Michael and Jason.s great script, and Stephen.s fantastically unique world.

With a title like Jesus Hates Zombies, we are definitely on board Eric Balfour's feature film directorial debut. As so is Mali (Do Not Disturb) Elfman, who has just officially signed on to produce the project.
According to Tonight at the Movies, the script was written by Michael Mongillo and Jason Alan Smith based on Stephen Lindsay’s comic book of the same name. Texas Chainsaw Massacre/Skyline star Eric Balfour will be taking his talents outside of the acting arena as he'll be directing a live-action adaptation of Stephen Lindsay's Jesus Hates Zombies, writes Tatm. Michael Mongillo and Jason Alan Smith will be writing the screenplay for the Alterna Comics' series that has been one of the best-selling comics on Android since its debut in mid-2009. Looking for a cheap laugh?
As the Video on Demand wars heats up, Amazon has started really ramping up their own online offerings. Yes, they still sell DVDs, but now they sell tons of movies that you can watch either on your computer monitor or download to a mobile device.
While, of course, Amazon is banking its VOD business on getting top Hollywood content, lots of smaller distributors are allowing their releases to be available on VOD in addition to selling DVDs on the site as well. Plus, Amazon’s longtime CreateSpace DVD on Demand business is also allowing for VOD, directly giving filmmakers some VOD power after they’ve been locked out of iTunes, Netflix and/or Hulu.
Renting feature length movies on Amazon usually runs about $1.99 to $2.99, so if you’re looking for a quick cheap laugh, these quirky, oddball little movies might satisfy your needs.

Phil Hall, the author of several books on indie and underground film as well as the writer of Film Threat’s popular Bootleg Files column, is launching the inaugural New England Underground Film Festival in 2011. This will be a one-day event held on October 8 at the Master of None LLC performing arts space in New Haven, Ct.
While this is a new event, it may sound vaguely familiar to long-time readers of Bad Lit. That’s because, back in 2008, Hall took over the New Haven Underground Film Festival from Michael Mongillo and Todd Dzicek, who had co-founded and run that fest for the previous four years.
Nhuff was also a one-day film festival, but, ironically, it wasn’t actually held in New Haven. In 2008, Hall held it in West Hartford, Ct, moving it from it’s previous location in Meriden. Now, Neuff is actually being held in New Haven.

Actor. Poet. Lousy brother. Murderer? Michael Madsen spoofs his “tough guy” persona in Michael Mongillo‘s mockumentary Being Michael Madsen, which is now available on DVD from Midnight Releasing for sale or rent. (Amazon | Netflix) (Also on Blu-Ray.)
In the film, Madsen is accused by a tabloid magazine for having murdered a young actress and one particularly aggressive paparazzo is determined to prove it. Eventually, the hounded actor decides enough is enough and lays out an elaborate scheme to turn the tables on his pursuer and the tabloid media in general.
Combining faux documentary footage with sit-down interviews with Madsen, his sister Virginia and actors such as Daryl Hannah, David Carradine, Harry Dean Stanton and Lacey Chabert, director Mongillo has created a terrific satire on modern celebrity culture.
The film was reviewed on Bad Lit back in 2007 and my two favorite parts of it center not on the main subject,...

"Being Michael Madsen" (2010)
Directed by Michael Mongillo
Released by Midnight Releasing
While not as distinguished or meta as "Being John Malkovich," expect this mockumentary about the "Reservoir Dogs" star to be equally surreal as Madsen recruits sister Virginia and "Kill Bill" co-stars Daryl Hannah and the late David Carradine to co-star in this film that sees him accused of murder. Rather than sit idly by, Madsen turns the table on the paparazzi photographer fueling the allegations by hiring a trio of filmmakers to follow his every move.
"Beneath Clouds" (2002)
Directed by Ivan Sen
Released by Cinema Epoch
This Australian drama stars Dannielle Hall and the late Damian Pitt as Lena and Vaughn, a pair of strangers thrown together by circumstance to travel across the country to Sydney where Lena hopes to learn more about her long-absent father and Vaughn hope to leave behind his criminal past and see his ailing mother.
