Fremantle enjoyed something of a drama boom last year. Buoyed by hits including American Gods and The New Pope, the global producer’s drama revenue climbed 36% to €414M ($494M) in 2019.
Then the pandemic hit. Fremantle, like all other major producers, suffered unprecedented shutdowns across the 30 territories in which it operates. Production is only now getting fully back on its feet.
The coronavirus crisis will inevitably put a dent in Fremantle’s scripted growth trajectory. But underneath an anomaly that no-one saw coming lies a steely confidence that the company is well-positioned in a frantically competitive market.
That confidence flows from Andrea Scrosati, Fremantle’s chief operating officer. Scrosati has just added global drama to his brief following the departure of Sarah Doole this month and he now oversees a slate that currently spans 50 shows all over the world.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the Season 5 finale of “Outlander,” titled “Never My Love.”]
The fifth season of “Outlander” has been full of big moments, from the death of Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) and Roger (Richard Rankin) being hanged, to Bree (Sophie Skelton) getting justice and Jamie (Sam Heughan) facing death from infection. On the season finale, it was Claire (Caitriona Balfe) whose life was in danger, as the story picked up on her kidnapping from last week and doled out some of the most brutal scenes in the series’ history. And once again that meant turning to rape.
“Outlander” has never shied away from using sexual assault to either advance plot or characters, as it faces the challenge of staying true to the source material while delivering an 18th-century drama to a modern audience. In that vein, Claire’s gang rape, led by Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) was inevitable as a big moment of her journey in the books,...

At the end of this week’s Outlander, Claire is attacked and physically removed from Fraser’s Ridge by a group of armed men. By the time Jamie becomes aware of what’s happened, his wife’s whereabouts are unknown.
If you’re an Oldlander who’s read Diana Galbaldon’s books, and if the show’s finale next week closely follows the events laid out in those pages, you know what’s coming — and that it’s here early. And if you aren’t, allow me to help you brace for impact: Things are about to get a lot bleaker.

The Browns (boo! hiss!) return in this week’s Outlander, and when the brothers and their men come riding up to Jamie and Claire’s front door, the Frasers instantly are on guard.
Which is understandable, given how contentious and ugly Claire’s most recent interaction was with the brothers. You’ll recall that, after she basically accused Lionel of shooting his daughter’s lover in the back during the Battle of Alamance, Lionel kicked Claire’s precious glass syringe to the ground and stepped on it. That meant she didn’t have the crucial piece of medical equipment when...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the fourth episode of Season 5 of “Outlander,” entitled “The Company We Keep.”
After the horror show at the Beardsleys’ cabin in last week’s “Outlander” episode, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) found themselves heading out to rejoin the militia with an infant in tow. They caught up with Roger (Richard Rankin), Fergus (Cesar Domboy) and the rest of the men in Brownsville where all hell had broken loose.
It all started because one of Jamie’s men, Isaiah Morton (Jon Tarcy), had an affair with Alicia Brown (Anna Burnett), the daughter of Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and niece of Richard Brown (Chris Larkin), the men for whom Brownsville is named. Her father disapproved not only because Alicia and Isaiah weren’t married, but also because he lost out on the dowry her betrothed had promised the family.

Between HBO’s “True Detective” and Hulu’s upcoming “Catch-22,” producer Richard Brown has proved his mastery of the limited-series TV format.

Listen to the podcast:
“There was a moment when I was quite frustrated with making independent movies and trying to find the money, it was always a struggle,” Brown recalled. “And I was interested in what the possibilities of television would be in the new world of streaming.”

Based on Joseph Heller’s seminal novel of the same name, Catch-22 is the story of the incomparable, artful dodger, Yossarian (Christopher Abbott).
Yossarian is a Us Air Force bombardier in World War II who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him.
But his real problem is not the enemy, but rather his own army which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service.

If you’ve followed the news at all today, you know Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen abruptly resigned amid tension in the Trump administration over its failure to stop Central American migrants from crossing the southern border.
President Donald Trump tweeted news of Nielsen’s departure at 6:02 p.m. Et. He wasted no time lining up an acting replacement and immediately announced on Twitter: “Kevin McAleenan, the current U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, will become Acting Secretary for Dhs. You've probably heard an example of a "catch-22" before, but if you were one of the few high school students who wasn't assigned to read Joseph Heller's satirical 1961 novel that inspired the phrase, here's the gist. Taking place during World War II, Catch-22 follows a Us Army Air Forces bomber named Captain John Yossarian and his fellow airmen while they are based on an island in the Mediterranean. The pilots all desperately want to be sent home, but unfortunately, they're all caught in a no-win situation because of an implicit military rule called Catch-22.
According to the rule, a pilot deemed crazy is not fit to fly a plane and should be sent home. One can only be deemed crazy by the army psychiatrist through a medical evaluation. Requesting a medical evaluation implies that the pilot is sane enough to be self-aware. Here's the real issue: if Captain Yossarian...

George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures has brought on Focus Features’ production executive Rebecca Arzoian as President of Television. In her new role, Arzoian will be overseeing all aspects of television development and production for the TV division of Clooney and Heslov’s company through their first look television deal with Paramount TV.
Arzoian has spent the past seven years at Focus Features, most recently as Vice President of Production. At Focus, Arzoian most recently worked on Mary Queen of Scots, Boy Erased, Blackklansman and The Beguiled on which she worked closely with director Sofia Coppola.
“Given Rebecca’s taste, vision and strong relationships with talent, Smokehouse television could not be in better hands as we ramp up development and production with our partners at Paramount,” said Clooney and Heslov.
On May 12, Hulu will debut the anticipated six-part limited series adaption of Catch-22, based on the Joseph Heller novel.

There are plenty of questions to be asked about what’s in store for television in the year 2019. Will Netflix be able to keep up with the scale of production they’ve established recently? Is there a physical limit to how many series Ryan Murphy can make at one time? What exactly is Apple’s plan for their original series, really?
One thing that’s known for sure: There’s going to be some really exciting stuff to watch (however you might end up watching it).
