Followill reveals favourite LPs of decade

27 December 2009 11:53 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Jared Followill has revealed his favourite music of this decade. The Kings of Leon bassist has included The White Stripes, Radiohead and Arcade Fire as his top picks of the last ten years. The 23-year-old told Rolling Stone: "[The White Stripes's White Blood Cells] was around the same time and had kind of the same feeling as The Strokes. We were just forming our band, starting to write songs and finding our own identity. We had so many older influences, that to have a band come out just as we were making our band, who seemed to have so many similar influences and had similar music to what we were trying to make just kind of gave us the confidence to do it. "The Strokes, The White Stripes and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: all three of those records really pushed us to continue. The White Stripes have a lot less melody than the Strokes, but »

What are the best music videos of the noughties?

24 December 2009 3:07 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Let us know your favourite pop promos of the decade

What makes a great pop video? Explosive action? Mind-bending animation? Bling? Bottles of Cristal? Being ripped off in the latest TV advert? One viewer's masterpiece is another's dross, and they will never agree.

And there are simply more videos now than there used to be. In the 70s and 80s, quality videos stood out because there wasn't much else around – Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Jacko's Thriller and Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer were events. Now videos cram every corner of YouTube, blogs and TV channels from Viva to MTV.

In the noughties, having a director for your video wasn't enough – they had to be a big name. Hype Williams was one of the busiest, shooting videos such as Kanye West's Gold Digger and Stronger, Beyoncé's Check on It and Coldplay's Viva La Vida. Other directors such as Mark Romanek »

Boos! & Whoop-doos!: 12 Months of Toilet Plunkers and Dumpster Diamonds!

23 December 2009 9:55 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Turned to dust and painful memories. My advice to you this coming New Year? »

Next Bond Girl...Susan Boyle? (Photos)

22 December 2009 12:52 PM, PST | Celebuzz.com | See recent Celebuzz news »

Earlier this week, rumors leaked out about Susan Boyle recording the all-important title song for the next edition of the James Bond movie series, now starring Daniel Craig as Special Agent 007. Susan would be joining an all-star cast of past Bond crooners, including Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, Madonna, Carly Simon, Duran Duran, Tina Turner, and, more recently, Chris Cornell and Jack White/Alicia Keys. However, despite the great honor, we couldn't help but imagine SuBo taking on an even more illustrious role in the next Bond film -- that of the famous Bond Girl, a plum role played in the past by »

District 9 I can't say anymore on this one than I already have in the past 24 hours here and here. It is now all up to you. 500 Days of Summer I liked this movie when I saw it back in July, but I can't say I have any intense need to revisit it. It satisfied the one time around, introduced us to an interesting new director and proved Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are a match made in anti-romantic comedy heaven. All About Steve Ugh, I was offered a review copy and kindly declined. I suggest you move along. Extract Give it a rental, it won't cause any harm to do so, but just don't expect anything too great. It Might Get Loud I never saw this film, which features the personal stories of guitarists The Edge (U2), Jimmy Page »

Susan Boyle to Sing Theme Song for the Next James Bond Movie

20 December 2009 10:10 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Susan Boyle, the singer who has broken multiple records in U.S. and across the pond, reportedly is in consideration to sing soundtrack for the next James Bond movie. Of that matter, composer of the classic 007 theme music Monty Norman said bosses from this "Bond 23" flick have given it serious thought.

"They'll think seriously," Norman stated before then adding "because she's got the right kind of sweeping voice." Responding to the prospect of her lending her vocal to the movie's anthem, the "Britain's Got Talent" star is said to be thrilled.

Last year, James Bond movie "Quantum of Solace" had Alicia Keys and The White Stripes' Jack White making a duet on its soundtrack "Another Way to Die". The two replaced Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson following Amy's worsened health condition.

The next installment of James Bond movie itself hasn't had any premiere date, but current 007 star Daniel Craig »

James Bond Theme Could Be Next for Susan Boyle

20 December 2009 8:13 PM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Words on the street are, Susan Boyle is being considered to belt out the theme song for "Bond 23". The name of the former "Britain's Got Talent" contestant was thrown in reportedly by Monty Norman, the composer for the 007 theme music as he told the Sunday Express, "She has the right kind of sweeping voice."

The Daily Mirror went on to report that the 48-year-old's voice has even been likened to Shirley Bassey's. The latter singer has sung three theme songs for the "Bond" movies, including "Goldfinger". Should she indeed contribute to the next "Bond" soundtrack, she'll follow the footsteps of Alicia Keys and Jack White who sang "Another Way to Die", the theme song for 2008's "Quantum of Solace".

This rumor came out hot on the heels of the success of Susan Boyle's debut album "I Dreamed a Dream". The effort has topped Amazon's best-selling album in »

Trailer for The White Stripes’ Under Great White Northern Lights

Last week, I told you all about the March release of The White Stripes’ concert doc, Under Great White Northern Lights, via box set and on its own. Today, I’ve got the trailer for you. The way comic book nerds felt about the Iron Man 2 trailer yesterday (I am not discounting myself from this group, however) is pretty much how I feel about this trailer. I think may need some…time alone…to process. That’s right, to process! Okay, fine, I’m talkin’ dirty here (sorry, Mom).

The film follows two friends, Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning), as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. Grizzly Bear to Score Blue Valentine and a Clip From the Upcoming White Stripes Documentary

14 December 2009 3:01 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Over the weekend, The Playlist found out that the band Grizzly Bear would be providing some music for the upcoming Sundance film, Blue Valentine, which stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.  Now the folks over at TwentyFourBit have done some more digging and have found out that it’s safe to presume that the band will be scoring the film since their agents list the band as the film’s composers.  As a fan of the band,  I’m now extremely curious to hear what they can do with a film score.

In other music related news, MySpace has released a clip/live performance of The White Stripes playing “Let’s Shake Hands” from their upcoming documentary, Under Great White Northern Lights, that chronicles the band in some pretty gorgeous looking black and white photography as they toured Canada in 2007.  You can watch the clip along with a teaser trailer »

Part 6: From 50 Cent to Piers Morgan

50 Cent Bought a lot of ugly houses, killed hip-hop in the process

Good work on destroying hip-hop there, Curtis Jackson. Your relentless – and highly profitable – pursuit of the lowest common denominator has turned what was once actually exciting, a musical form that had wit and imagination and some glorious fire in its belly, into something crushingly, ball-achingly tedious, a tail-chasing, scab-picking parody of itself. I mean, well done on the cash and all that, but couldn't "Fiddy" have done something more interesting with it other than just buy an ugly house, some bullet-proof vests and a bunch of vulgar motors while writing rhymes like, "'Til the sun comes up, every night, we party, yeah we party 'til daylight", or, if you prefer, "I'm in my Lambo maggot, my 4, 4 faggot …" Is that it? Is that all the hip-hop fan deserves? Apparently, yes; yes it is. »

The White Stripes’ concert doc gets a release (sort of)

After seeing (and loving) rock doc It Might Get Loud earlier this year, I can assure you that Jack White is an interesting documentary subject, but when you combine Jack with Meg and one crazy concert tour, “interesting” doesn’t do the concept justice. Rolling Stone readers love Green Day ... a lot. In the magazine's Decade-End Readers' Poll, the Berkeley-bred punk/pop trio grabbed the #1 spot for Best Single, Best Album and Top Artist of the '00s.

As the #1 single, readers picked the ballad "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," one of two Green Day tunes that made the cut, along with "American Idiot" (#13). The rest of the top five were Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," U2's "Beautiful Day," Britney Spears' "Toxic" and Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together."

Also getting love in the top 15 were Kanye West, Avril Lavigne, My Chemical Romance, Kelly Clarkson, the White Stripes and Coldplay.

A number of acts notched two albums on the list of the decade's top releases. While »
