WGA West’s Middle Eastern Writers Committee Urges Hollywood To Be More Inclusive, Less Stereotypical
Members of the WGA West’s Middle Eastern Writers Committee are urging the film and television industry to be more inclusive and less stereotypical in its storytelling.
“Reach out to us. Get to know our work. And most of all, take more chances on us to both tell our own stories and contribute to the ones being crafted in writers rooms all over town,” they wrote Monday in an open letter to the industry. But they noted: “How can we get in the rooms to tell other stories if we’re not even being hired to tell our own?”
The group said they formed the committee “primarily on the basis of one disappointing fact. As reported in the Wgaw Inclusion Report of 2020, Middle Eastern writers are dead last, making up only 0.3% of employed writers. You read that right. 0.3%. That’s pretty close to 0%. Because of this, we find ourselves at a cultural inflection point,...

"Leo's got an army waiting for you!" "He's gunna need it. Today's new short film is a pulp western titled Domino Falling, that plays as a primer to a feature-length story focusing on the character of restless hit man in Mexico, played by Christopher Backus. The short is written and directed by Siavash Farahani and features some nice work all around, it's a good watch. It reminds me a bit of Kill Bill, in a way, and is quoted as having references to Peckinpah and Leone. I will say, by the end of this I do admit I really did want to see more. As something fun to watch for only 14 minutes, it's a worthy short to catch. Watch below. Thanks to GeekTyrant for the tip. If you have some time to kill, I have a short film for you to watch that's worth checking out. It's called "Domino Falling," and it's a modern day Western that was made to pay tribute to the classic films of Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah. The movie was written and directed by Siavash Farahani. It features several scenes from the completed feature length screenplay that he hopes to turn into a feature film.
The story has a Tarantino style feel to it, and it follows a restless hitman in Mexico, "forced to carry out a gruesome task to save his love from a sadistic kingpin rumored to be the Devil himself."

We reported back in March that 20th Century Fox had picked up the rights to The Shadow and the rumor that director David Slade (30 Days of Night, Eclipse) was possibly taking over directorial duties from Sam Raimi (Drag Me to Hell), who was on-board when the film was over at Sony.
Now, Pajiba is reporting that Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill: Vol. 3) is now attached to direct the remake of The Shadow. They report that Slade had never been confirmed to direct the film and Tarantino has taken on the project, and is also re-writing Siavash Farahani‘s script.
Tarantino’s representative told MTV:
“There is no truth to this story.”
The Shadow is slated to hit theaters in 2012.

Quentin Tarantino is a possibility to direct The Shadow, an updated adaptation of the crime-fighting vigilante from the 1930s radio serial. The cult filmmaker is reportedly attached to co-write and helm the remake.
Sam Raimi was loosely attached to produce a reboot the series at Sony until the property changed hands to Fox earlier this year. Pajiba reports David Slade (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) even considered directing the remake before the property passed under the eyes of Tarantino.
Siavash Farahani wrote the current draft, which is full of campy fun and gruesome action, but at this point the script is back out for a rewrite. Perhaps to Tarantino?
Who knows if he’ll wind up involved in any way, but the prospect of Qt getting his hands on just about anything warrants a glance, especially if it erases the memory of Alec Baldwin’s odd 1994 version. (For the record, MTV...

Quentin Tarantino has apparently become attached to the reboot of "The Shadow" currently in development at 20th Century Fox reports Pajiba.
Sam Raimi and later David Slade had been attached to the project when it was setup at Sony Pictures. Sony sold the rights earlier this year to Fox but at last report Raimi was still attached as producer.
Tarantino is now said to be re-writing Siavash Farahani’s script. If true, the move comes as a big surprise as Tarantino is linked to plenty of other projects but his name has never come up in regards to "The Shadow" before.
"The Shadow" debuted in 1931 on a CBS radio show and followed the adventures of a crime-fighter who skulked in shadows wearing a hat and cape, and who had the power to cloud men's minds.

We reported way back in January 2009 that there was talk of a new Shadow film. This past March it was rumored that director David Slade was possibly taking over directorial duties from Sam Raimi on a brand new remake, and now it seems another filmmaker has come aboard the film. Our friends over at Pajiba are reporting that Quentin Tarantino is now attached to The Shadow remake.
The site is reporting that Slade had never been confirmed to direct the film, and it seems that Tarantino has taken on the project, re-writing Siavash Farahani’s already-completed script. It was also said that Tarantino, “is being discussed (and this is a two-way discussion) and or already attached as the future director of The Shadow.”
Sony originally had the project set up back when we wrote about it in January 2009, but that has since passed, as Fox got the rights to the...

Hey guys, check out the latest Hollywood rumor! Quentin Tarantino is attached to co-write and direct a Fox’s reboot of The Shadow!
And if this is something that already sounds familiar to you, let us remind you that the last time we heard anything about the project Sam Raimi was attached. But we guess that’s no longer the case…
So, nothing is official yet, but according to Pajiba: “…The person that is now attached to the project is none other than Quentin Tarantino, who is also attached as co-writer….
Maybe he loved the original radio show and the pulps (which do seem up Tarantino’s alley), and maybe he saw Siavash Farahani’s script and decided that, if anyone could erase the memory of Alec Baldwin’s atrocity, it’d be him.”

Here's and interesting rumor to get you thinking. According to Pajiba Quentin Tarantino is attached to co-write and direct a new version of The Shadow at 20th Century Fox! I assume this is the same Shadow project that Sam Raimi is producing, and at one point David Slade (30 Days of Night) was rumored to possibly direct the film as well. It looks like that may not have worked out.
The project is not a high priority project for the studio at this time, but it seems like they are trying to get it into development. Here is what the site reports:

The Hollywood Cog has been a little low key around here of late, not really because he/she' lacking for news -- he/she's in a position to know much more than what we actually report -- but because breaking news weeks or months before it is confirmed is a nasty business, replete with the occasional publicist denial, and a lot of headaches from around the movie blogosphere, where they take their trade news minutia very seriously. Plus, often by the time a story is confirmed, our original report is forgotten about, so few think to credit The Hollywood Cog (Halle Berry's Shoe Addicts Anonymous, Sam Worthington's Dan Dare, and Paul Greengrass' Treasure Island are but a few recent examples). Unfortunately, the Cog's very impressive track record gets lost in the mix. Not a big deal, really, except that the Cog gives us this information because it's fun to report,...

Producer Sam "Spider-Man" Raimi, continues developing with producer Michael Uslan, a big screen adaptation of the pulp magazine hero "The Shadow" for 2oth Century Fox, with Josh Donen of Buckaroo Entertainment co-producing from a screenplay by Siavash Farahani.

Since Sam Raimi left Spider-Man 4 and Sony decided to reboot the franchise, the question remains over what Raimi will direct next. Raimi is producing several projects, including an adaptation of World of Warcraft, but that may not be Raimi's next directing job.
IESB reports that Raimi may want to direct The Shadow, based on the character that gained notoriety in radio dramas the 1930s and later became the subject of comic books and several movies, the most recent being 1994's The Shadow with Alec Baldwin in the lead role. Raimi is already attached as producer and apparently "flipped" over the latest draft of the script by screenwriting newcomer Siavash Farahani.
According to the report, the second draft of the script was a "more than solid" effort that should receive a "R" rating. The report says the script is more along he lines of Batman Begins and has "done the character justice.

Now that Sam Raimi has left the Spider-Man franchise, the obvious question is what he might do next.

It’s been sometime since we heard anything about the new The Shadow film. Way back in December 2006, Sam Raimi and Michael Uslan came onboard as producers and Siavash Farahani was appointed to write the screenplay. It was said that several other Street and Smith properties were being optioned, almost as part of a set - these would include Doc Savage and The Avenger, possibly even The Whisperer and The Skipper, and it was sometimes suggested that characters from each would all appear in a single movie.
At the time, I pictured something between Sin City and Dick Tracy. And then… radio silence. Now, producer Michael Uslan has spoken to MTV about progress on the film and how he sees it shaping up and one of his comments has me making my ? face.

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? Columbia Pictures and Sam Raimi know.
After a lengthy negotiation, Columbia has acquired the screen rights to The Shadow, the legendary 1930s pulp hero, for a big-screen adaptation to be produced by Raimi and Josh Donen through their Buckaroo Entertainment banner. Michael Uslan is also producing via his Comic Book Movies, Llc/Branded Entertainment.
Columbia has set Siavash Farahani to write the screenplay.
The Shadow debuted in 1931 on a CBS radio show which aimed to boost the magazine circulation of sponsor Street & Smith. The character was actually the moniker for the announcer, and listeners began demanding stories based on the name.
Walter B. Gibson created the character, writing the adventures of a crime-fighter who skulked in shadows wearing a hat and cape, and who had the power to cloud men's minds.
The Shadow became one of the greatest pulp heroes of the time, and the radio series, which featured a young Orson Welles, spawned the catchphrase "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!"
The character proved a merchandising bonanza, was the subject of seminal comic books, and influenced an array of pop culture, from Batman to V for Vendetta.
The character moved to the screen, becoming the hero of several movies in late '30s and '40s, a Columbia cliffhanger serial starring Victor Jory, and a couple of TV series in the early days of television.
