As the news broke, “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver and NBC News’ Willie Geist discussed Jon Stewart’s upcoming return to hosting “The Daily Show.” In an interview being taped for NBC’s “Today,” Geist asked the former “Daily Show” correspondent about his old boss’s return to once-a-week host duties.
“So we hear. We’re repeating back what was just handed to us on the phone,” Oliver said, clearly coming to the news fresh.
“I think that’s a surprise, yeah. That is a show that needs a host,” Oliver said of the currently hostless Comedy Central show. “He certainly is a very, very good one. So yeah, it will be exciting to see what he does.”
“I do think, after 2025, they should appoint a permanent host,” Oliver stated. “I would have hired Roy Wood, or Amber Ruffin, were very good.”

John Oliver was on NBC’s Today Show when he learned that his former boss Jon Stewart was returning to host The Daily Show.
Stewart was unveiled by Comedy Central earlier today as the Monday night host for the late-night show through the election with the news team correspondents handling the other days.
Oliver said he was “surprised” to hear the news, but said it will be “exciting to see what he does” and compared him to Michael Jordan.

Comedian Hasan Minhaj has been eyed as a leading candidate for the open host role at Comedy Central’s “Daily Show,” according to three people familiar with the matter, suggesting that a months-long bake-off for the job among a phalanx of top comics is reaching its final stages.
Minhaj is not guaranteed to win the position, these people caution, and a deal is not believed to have been finalized. Still, his name has emerged as a likely successor to Trevor Noah, who left the job in a surprise maneuver late last year.
Minhaj, who worked on “Daily” as one of its team of faux “correspondents” between 2014 and 2018, and went on to serve as the host of a weekly program for Netflix called “Patriot Act,” said recently that he’d be open to the gig. “I’m definitely open to the conversation. It’s also a family conversation now. It’s...

The Impractical Jokers are special. Hidden camera prank shows were nothing new when they first hit the air, but they found a way of doing it that has kept them going for over a decade. Much like Penn & Teller, the Jokers have constantly provided a brand of entertainment that everyone is used to, while finding ways to always make it feel fresh and new.
After the departure of Joe Gatto, a laundry list of celebrity guests have come in to fill some gaps. Now as Sal Vulcano, Brian “Q” Quinn, and James “Murr” Murray told Den of Geek, the list for Impractical Jokers Season 10 is growing even larger. Post Malone, Anthony Davis, and Bruce Campbell are just a few of the killer names to join in this go around. But, there is one surprise celebrity that the guys are super psyched about and we were shocked to hear about.

Late-night television is going through a moment.
For the first time in eight years, there’s a significant change behind the desks coming in 2023 as the industry wraps its head around the future of nightly, and weekly, talk shows.
In 2022, James Corden, as revealed by Deadline, announced he was leaving The Late Late Show, Trevor Noah stepped down from The Daily Show, Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal was canceled by David Zaslav’s cost-cutting Warner Bros. Discovery regime, Desus & Mero fell out and broke up, leaving their rising Showtime series.
The big three remained unchanged – Jimmy Kimmel signed a new contract to continue hosting ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, after deliberating about leaving the nightly slog, Jimmy Fallon is a year into a new deal hosting NBC’s The Tonight Show and Stephen Colbert continues comfortably at the top hosting CBS’ The Late Show with few expecting him to leave any time soon.

Every year we hear the same Christmas songs again and again and again, the playlist seldom changing.
While the supermarkets might stick rigidly to Slade and Wizzard, and the high street coffee shops prefer the gingerbread-and-eggnog stylings of Michael Buble, Norah Jones or the Rat Pack, variation is minimal and certain tracks just will not go away.
You might wonder how much cash the writers of the more ubiquitous seasonal standards squirrel away every year and whether it’s really possible to live on the royalties.
In Nick Hornby’s novel About a Boy (1998), Will Freeman does precisely that, living an agreeably idle bachelor life on the proceeds of a festive single written by his late father.
The truth is, it’s hard to say for sure precisely how much The Pogues or Mariah Carey have coined from their work as the Performing Right Society (Prs) does not reveal the...

Chicago — When this proud city welcomed back hometown hero Don Cornelius last year, it wasn't just Chicago-style – it was "Soul Train" style, complete with Afro wigs, bell bottoms and hip-shaking in the streets.
The 40th anniversary celebrations for "Soul Train" traced a remarkable journey for a former Chicago police officer who got his start in broadcasting when he pulled over a radio executive in a traffic stop and then had to build up his pioneering show one step at a time.
Cornelius, who became an icon defining black culture in America for decades, died at his California home Wednesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 75.
While the South Side native and his show left Chicago decades ago for Los Angeles, his legacy has lived on here – in the "Don Cornelius Way" street sign west of downtown, in the teens and performers who boogied onstage during the early days of...

After five hosts, one extended hiatus, one cancellation, and a whole lot of laughs, Last Comic Standing has been silenced again by NBC, as the network will not order another cycle for the upcoming summer season. NBC has yet to release a full summer schedule, so it's unclear if this means more room for new unscripted shows or more room for repeats, but it's hard to think that this is the last time we've seen the show in some format (it could conceivably make a channel jump again if need be).
Felipe Esparza was the most recent winner that Last Comic produced, as he beat out the likes of Tommy Johnagin and Roy Wood, Jr. to win the development contract with NBC. Futon Critic originally broke the story, citing some fairly low ratings in the previous season (3.91 million viewers).

Former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash is celebrating after his solo debut was named Album of the Year at the Classic Rock Roll of Honor awards on Wednesday, November 10. The rocker's self-titled offering saw off competition from acts including Kiss, Iron Maiden and Wolfmother to win the prize at the ceremony, held at London's Roundhouse venue and hosted by Alice Cooper.
Australian stars AC/DC picked up the Band of the Year honor, while Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones was given a standing ovation as he collected his Outstanding Contribution trophy. Three The Black Sabbath legends were honored at the event - bassist Geezer Butler was crowned Metal Guru, and late metal star Ronnie James Dio was remembered with the Tommy Vance Inspiration prize. Former Sabbath frontman Glenn Hughes accepted the Childline Rocks award.
Canadian trio Rush won the Living Legend award, which was picked up by frontman Geddy Lee.

Wilson Phillips have reunited again for their fourth album, "Christmas in Harmony." It's the award-winning group's first album in over six years.
The multi-platinum trio of Carnie Wilson, Wendy Wilson, and Chynna Phillips are set to release their first ever Christmas album, including their versions of classic Christmas songs like "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "Silver Bells," "Little Drummer Boy," and "The Christmas Song."
The album will be led by their cover of "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday," the Roy Wood-penned 1973 classic which has since been covered by groups like the Spice Girls and the Saturdays. They're also set to perform the track on "The View" and "Good Morning America" later this year.
On "Christmas in Harmony," Wilson Phillips collaborated with Glen Ballard, best known for his work with Alanis Morissette and Michael Jackson. Ballard was also the main producer behind their self-titled debut, which yielded three #1 hits including "Hold On.

Last Comic Standing 7 ended last night, and Felipe Esparza won the $250,000 prize and an NBC talent deal. Asked how he felt, he said in his typical dry style, "Good. Awesome." Tommy Johnagin was the runner up, and the other runners up were, in order, Roy Wood, Jr., Mike DeStefano, and Myq Kaplan. NBC's resuscitation of Last Comic dispensed with everything except the live performance shows, which mostly worked except for the judges, who...

Stand-up comic Myq Kaplan has a knack for winning comedy contests: The rising comedian won NY's Funniest Stand-Up Competition as part of the NY Comedy Festival, and "March Comedy Madness" at Carolines on Broadway. He was a finalist in the Boston Comedy Festival and Comedy Central's "Open Mic Fights." Earlier this year, Kaplan was given the "Emerging Comic Award" at NYC's Ecny Awards. He has also performed on the New Faces show at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, as well as Comedy Central's Live at Gotham and Comedy Central Presents.Which is why we think Kaplan, one of five remaining finalists on the seventh season of the NBC reality competition series "Last Comic Standing," has a good chance to win America's vote and take home the title. The voting has now ended, and he has already outlasted hundreds of other funny people from Los Angeles, New York City,...

This week's episode of Last Comic Standing showed us the New York auditions on the first day. Yet again, there were the usual weirdos wearing strange costumes or using some other sort of prop. The list included a goblin, an elf, a clown, a ventriloquist & dummy & the dummy's dummy, another ventriloquist with Bernie the bird dummy, and yet another ventriloquist with an old man dummy, and believe it or not, another ventriloquist with soul brother Ricky the dummy, then a ventriloquist with Dangerous the duck dummy...and none of them were funny.
The comics sent through to the semifinals this time were Alycia Cooper, Mike DeStefano, Claudia Cogan, Kurt Metzger, Tommy Johnagin, Jamie Lee, Roy Wood, Jr., Amanda Melson and Jesse Joyce. I think it's fair to say that the season is already shaping up o be fantastic.

Christopher Lee isn't actually a wizard, he just plays one in the movies (and sort of looks like one in real life, now that we think of it). But still, that hasn't stopped him from diving headlong into the mystical, magickal world of Wizard Rock, with a full-blown symphonic concept album he's calling Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross.
And, yes, we know the real Charlemagne wasn't technically a wizard (just the subject of an awesome Steely Dan song and most of the Hold Steady's Separation Sunday) but Lee's album is still a prime example of bearded, bong-glazed Wizard Rock, full of trilling strings and rolling timpani drums, songs with titles like "The Iron Crown of Lombardy" and "The Bloody Verdict of Verden," and Lee's booming voice, which, much like the legendary Sword of Erdrick, is strong enough to cleave even the heartiest of steel. Not to mention, you know,...

Roy Wood had it going both ways. His hair was not only long, it was wide. Aside from his sometimes fearsome, leonine appearance, he was also a first-rate rock 'n roll synthesist, mixing influences as diverse as Vaudeville, Syd-Barret-era Pink Floyd psychedelia, Elvis rockabilly swagger, and The Beatles' effortless melodicism.
Wood's primary musical vehicle was The Move, the late '60s/early '70s British band that eventually spawned the better-known Electric Light Orchestra. You've no doubt heard the latter, but you're a serious rock 'n roll fan indeed if you've heard the former. Although The Move had several Top 10 hits in their native England, the magic never crossed the pond. These days The Move -- and Roy Wood -- are largely forgotten relics of a bygone era. And it's too bad. Some of those relics still make for very fine listening.
