In 2011, the silver screen debut of Green Lantern landed like a thud instead of soaring like a triumph. The film was dismissed both by critics and wider audiences; one of the more positive reviews was Roger Ebert's middling praise, "['Green Lantern'] intends to be a sound-and-light show, assaulting the audience with sensational special effects. If that's what you want, that's what you get."
Time hasn't been any kinder to "Green Lantern." Star Ryan Reynolds has poked fun at it in both of his subsequent "Deadpool" movies. "Green Lantern" was conceived as the beginning of a larger DC Comics film franchise, meant to rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead, its hero has been persona non grata on film since. Green Lantern is usually a staple of the Justice League but in both versions of that film, the only Lantern who showed up was a cameo.

Despite a parade of directors, writers, rumors, and release dates, The Flash movie is still coming to the Dceu. With a script by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) and directed by Andy Muschietti (WB’s two-part horror epic It), the Dceu Flash movie will be loosely inspired by Flashpoint, a DC Comics story that remains a major touchstone in the life of Barry Allen.
For those who don’t know, Flashpoint was a 2011 comic from Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert which saw Barry Allen travel back in time to prevent Eobard Thawne, the Reverse-Flash, from murdering Barry’s mother. As a result, a Butterfly Effect-esque “flashpoint” causing radical changes to the DC Universe. But the roots of Flashpoint go even further back, to another Geoff Johns-written Flash tale.
The Flash: Rebirth was a 2009 story by Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver that brought Barry Allen back from the dead. While...

Big changes are going on over at DC Comics as last week saw co-publisher Dan Didio step down from his position after a decade of being in charge. It’s widely reported that Didio was fired by AT&T as part of a large-scale restructuring and it’s believed that the corporation decided to let Didio go now over concerns surrounding his big 5G relaunch event. A lot is riding on its success, apparently, potentially including the future of DC Comics itself.
Former DC artist Ethan Van Sciver shared his thoughts on Didio’s exit in a YouTube video recently and revealed some worrying intel that he’d heard from his friends in the industry. According to Van Sciver, AT&T is losing interest in comic book publishing all together and, though they will continue the multimedia DC brand across movies, TV, games and merchandise, if 5G doesn’t go as planned,...

Captain Marvel arrives in cinemas later this week on a wave of positive reviews, impressive pre-sales and promising opening weekend projections, but as you’ve likely noticed, the film has also seen its share of online backlash, including multiple videos from former DC Comics artist Ethan Van Sciver decrying the project as a “disgrace.”
In the latest effort from the Green Lantern and Flash: Rebirth illustrator, Van Sciver echoes many of the talking points that have been making the rounds among Captain Marvel’s most passionate detractors, arguing that bringing Carol Danvers into the McU is an ill-advised attempt at creating the franchise’s own Wonder Woman:
“It isn’t possible to make an excellent Captain Marvel movie, one that can actually fulfill the hopes and dreams of women everywhere. Why? Because Captain Marvel isn’t just that good of a character. Captain Marvel is a character built on convenience,...

The Flash: Year One will not only add new details to Barry Allen's origin, but also remain true to the past.
How well do you really know Barry Allen's origin story? Chances are, even if you're a die-hard Flash fan, the answer is "not that well." Sure, there's the chemicals and the lightning storm, there's the version of events we all know and love over on the TV series -- but what about the Barry who has been running around as the Fastest Man Alive since the Silver Age? What actually happened after that fateful night in the lab?
The truth is, Barry's earliest adventures are pretty woefully underexplored. There are a few reasons for this. For starters, he's a product of an era in comics where origin stories weren't explored in great detail. But perhaps more importantly he spent the majority of of the late '80s and '90s,...

Last night, the story emerged that 3% of DC’s workforce, along with 10% of staff at Warner Bros. Consumer Products, was being laid off, and according to comic book artist Ethan Van Sciver, the commercial failure of 2017’s Justice League has a lot to do with these cuts.
The Green Lantern illustrator released a video on YouTube in which he offered his perspective on the recent difficulties faced by DC, tracing the company’s ongoing problems back to Justice League and the difficulties that unfolded behind the scenes:
“Why is this happening? It’s happening because of the Justice League movie. That’s what it is. The Justice League movie was a catastrophic disaster for Warner Bros and for DC, for the Dceu. What happened was, it was underway with a $350 million budget under Zack Snyder. Zack Snyder had a family crisis, and some of you know what that is, and...

A Marvel comics writer for the Star Wars comic books and extended universe has been fired, allegedly because of “uncivil” tweets.
Chuck Wendig said via Twitter that he was let go after posting a number of explicit tweets attacking Republicans and the Gop over the confirmation of Associate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Wendig claimed in his tweets that “It was too much politics, too much vulgarity, too much negativity on my part.” He later blamed Comicsgate, a campaign by artist Ethan Van Sciver to allegedly stop so-called social justice warriors from injecting liberal activism into stories. Critics of the movement have called it harassment.
Marvel has confirmed in published reports that Wendig is no longer with the company, but declined to state the reason.

Joshua Williamson and Howard Porter will tell the story of Barry Allen's first year on the job in The Flash: Year One.
I have gone on at length, at virtually every opportunity, about Josh Williamson's tenure as writer on The Flash. Williamson and numerous artists have crafted a run that encompasses decades of Flash continuity, the entire Flash family, numerous rogues, and more over the last two years. He is far from finished.
Williamson will reunite with artist Howard Porter, who drew the excellent "The Button" story last year for "The Flash: Year One." It's exactly what it says it is, a deep dive into Barry Allen's origin story. Believe it or not, Barry's early days as Flash have never really been explored in comics. His origin story from 1956's Showcase #4 is relatively unchanged, and that brief tale saw him emerge as a more or less fully formed hero.

After years of writing great comic book stories for Marvel Comics, Brian Micheal Bendis headed over to DC Comics to try something new and play with their characters. Well, it has been announced that he'll write a new 12-part Batman story arc in Batman Giant. This is the first time he will be writing a story for the Dark Knight and I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with the character.
This comic is a part of DC's new line of 100-page Giant comics for Walmart. Bendis has had his fair share of working with dark, gritty, and grounded heroes in the past such as Daredevil and Jessica Jones, so Batman should be a fun character for him to play with.
What's interesting is that Bendis is currently writing Superman for DC and while he's taking on Batman for DC's Walmart-exclusive titles, DC's Batman writer Tom King will write a 12-issue Superman story arc.

If you’re of a certain generation, you remember the big summertime issues that your parents picked up for you on the way to whatever you were doing that required a long car ride to get there– comics that gave you new stories combined with older fare that brought you into a richer shared universe.
This summer, Walmart shoppers will get a chance to do that again as DC Entertainment announced today that a series of “giant” monthly comics will be sold exclusively in more than 3,000 participating Walmart stores around the country.
Available for $4.99, each 100-page anthology features all-new stories written exclusively for these books by some of DC’s top creative talents, including Tom King, Dan Jurgens, Brian Michael Bendis, Andy Kubert (New Challengers) and others. Each title will also include additional story arcs drawn from fan-favorite DC eras such as the New 52, Rebirth and the New Age of DC Heroes.

To date, The Flash certainly hasn’t shied away from its comic book roots. Sure, it may be its own beast, but its embracing of the source material, among other things, has allowed it to flourish in a way that not many other superhero shows have been able to.
As you may be aware, the season 4 premiere is actually titled “The Flash Reborn,” which’ll no doubt cause devout readers of the comics to recall Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver’s modern classic, The Flash: Rebirth. And, believe it or not, the producers very nearly titled the premiere just that, but had a very sound reason to pull it back it bit.

I’ve been perplexed. As I’m sure so many of you have been paying at least a modicum of attention to the comings and goings of our President, no doubt you’ve seen a rise of discourse throughout your social feeds and TV screens concerning the separation of art and the artist.
Ok, it’s really an argument about whether using the national anthem as the background for non-violent protest is offensive. Okay. Follow me here, kiddos.
Among the master debaters I’ve followed, one argument floated to the top of my gaze. It was the notion that professional athletes are in fact paid to entertain and therefore should be reprimanded and subjugated to dismissal from their jobs if their actions fail to entertain the fanbase of said sports team from which they hail. In short, I think that argument is hilariously off-base. Professional athletes are in fact paid to play a game.

While the mainline series that is Dark Nights: Metal is allowing for Scott Snyder to display his vast knowledge of this DC Universe, we can’t help but love how the various tie-ins that’ll hit stands this fall have an Elseworlds kind of flavor to them. The Flash movie is going to follow the Flashpoint story, and that makes perfect sense for the DC extended universe...
While much of the DC Entertainment portion of Warner Bros' Hall H presentation at the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con focused on the next two movies on the Dceu slate, Justice League and Aquaman, one key detail about their other movies stood out. The Flash movie will be an adaptation of the famed Flashpoint comic book story.
For those who don't know, Flashpoint was a 2011 comic from Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert which saw Barry Allen travel back in time to prevent his mother's murder by Eobard Thawne, the Reverse-Flash. Action Comics #981
Written by Dan Jurgens | Art by Jackson Herbert | Published by DC Comics
Superman haters often complain that it is impossible to construct a compelling story because he is just so powerful. How can you have stakes when your hero can do just about anything? Well with this arc Dan Jurgens’s answer to that is to create a team of three separate Superman villains in Cyborb Superman, The Eradicator, and General Zod, all of which nearly took him out on their own previously. Honestly, that is a pretty good answer.
In a way, this Revenge arc is a mini event that ties in elements from the Superman series as well as Suicide Squad. Now all these pieces that were once separate, like Amanda Waller taking control of Zod for her own personal goals, are all coming together in this storyline. As Superman faces off against these three individuals the world watches as the Man of Steel is perhaps for the first time over his head due to the foes he is facing. Adding to the pile of awfulness is the trip he took to the Black Vault that has left him in a state of disarray. What is revealed by the end of this issue does come off as a silly direction to go, but since Rebirth Jurgens has made Superman stories that should not work actually work. Plus it appears Superman will be getting some much-needed help next issue from some of his super allies as well.
Jackson Herbert’s art works as it fits into the typical DC house style we have seen with this series and other main DC books. One issue is his depiction of Zod lacks any consistency. Depending on the panel his age tends to fluctuate. Minus that small gripe he gets the job done.
Action Comics has been hit or miss with its different arcs and so far Revenge is turning out to be a major hit. One full of big adventure with the type of world-ending stakes you want in an Action Comics story.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #22
Written by Robert Venditti | Art by Ethan Van Sciver | Published by DC Comics
Now that Yellow and Green Lanterns have established an uneasy alliance issue twenty-two is the first major test of their truce. The Planet Vault is being robbed and it is up to the Lanterns to stop it and save the day. Robert Venditti made the right choice by not making their first test some sort of universal disaster as the Lanterns deal with this threat rather easily. By doing this Venditti can allow this trust to build until it eventually implodes.
Hal Jordan shows his hand as it is clear he is not fully trusting of the Yellow Lanterns. He clearly is looking for any reason to break the truce and is still not fully willing to buy into this new status quo. Venditti also gave a great little moment with Jon Stewart as he shows some out of character excitement. Seeing Stewart quietly cheering to himself, “I did it” provided a welcome laugh out loud moment.
Ethan Van Sciver returns to art and how I wish he was on this book full-time. His facial designs have so much detail and paneling allows to book to flow very smoothly. This was one of the quickest reads I have had with this series, although I did make sure to go back and just soak in some of his art more.
It was a welcome to see these Lanterns facing off against more than themselves. The differing color Lanterns idea has become stale at this point so anytime the focus is on a different villain it is a breath a fresh air.

Sure, writer Robert Venditti could’ve just reunited all of our favorite lightsmiths at the start of the series, but then it would’ve appeared rushed. And seeing as how he was building upon what he’d already established with his New 52 run on Green Lantern as well as Tom Taylor’s Green Lantern Corps: Edge of Oblivion – which saw the wealth of the Corps venture to and from the universe that preceded the current one, no less – it wouldn’t have been logical to reunite everyone from the outset, now would it?
But before the most popular ringslingers get to exchange high fives,...

Gail Simone has promised an expanded cast for The Fury of Firestorm:The Nuclear Men. The Secret Six writer is co-authoring the DC Comics relaunch title with Ethan Van Sciver, with Yildiray Çinar providing illustrations. "One of the funnest aspects of this book is that there are dozens of new characters, literally," Simone told Comic Book Resources. "It's almost like the Green Lantern Corps in the amount of characters who will show up, and we have at different times, Jim Lee, Ethan Van Sciver and Yildiray Çinar all designing them, sometimes different ideas for the same character. That's a ridiculous position to be in, to tell Jim Lee, no, sorry, I like Yildiray's idea a little better, or to have to choose between Ethan and Yildiray. It's just insanity. I love it. James brings the Green Lantern story up to date, with a look at his adventures in comics over the past five years...
With the cancellation of Hal Jordan's ill-conceived Spectre title and sales dwindling on the solo Green Lantern book, in 2004 DC decided to bow to the inevitable and return Hal Jordan to the titular role of DC's Emerald Knight.
But returning Jordan to the role and re-establishing a clean and easy to understand status quo wouldn't be easy. To solve this seemingly weighty problem, DC turned to its fast emerging star writer, Geoff Johns.
A former assistant of Superman director, Richard Donner, Johns had started writing for the company in the late 90s on the short-lived, but well-regarded Stars And S.T.R.I.P.E. series. Thanks to his work on that title, Johns was swiftly assigned co-writing duties on the Justice Society Of America monthly and from...

Green Lantern, DC Comics’ intergalactic hero, soared into theaters this weekend, introducing many people to a character who made his debut more than 50 years ago.
DC scribe and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns was heavily involved in the making of this film, so it should come as no surprise that the comic books themselves form the basic fabric of the movie’s story.
As we've done in the past for films like "Thor" and "X-Men: First Class," we’re taking a look at the various elements of the film and breaking down for you just where they come from in Green Lantern’s decades of comics history.
Oh, and if you haven't seen "Green Lantern" yet, consider this your Spoiler Warning!
Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), the alter ego of our titular protagonist, first appeared in Showcase #22 in October of 1959. Echoing his comics debut, Jordan is shown to be a cocky...

Here it is. The full 52 titles that DC Will debut at the end of the summer. There are a lot of exciting new beginnings for old favorites like Swamp Thing and Sgt. Rock, and the whole lineup is chock full of some of the greatest names in the business. I’m a little disappointed that DC burned 11 of its new titles on the Bat-family alone. That seems a little bit of a waste. Especially since 4 of those titles actually feature Bruce Wayne/Batman in them. I love Bats as much as the next guy, but 4 titles? Really? I thought the whole renumbering was supposed to fix things like that.
In any event, here are the 52. I’m pretty excited all around. Let me hear your thoughts in the comments below.

We’ve already revealed the first 10 issues in D.C. Comics’ grand renumbering experiment, which you can find here. There are 52 titles in all, and lest you think D.C. won’t be rebooting their flagship titles, you’d be mistaken. Some of the bigger news on Cbm this week has not been movie related, but DC's decision to restart the clock on it's entire roster, beginning again at #1st issues. Below is the new character design for Firestorm by Ethan Van Sciver and Moose Baumann... I have been asked to remove the image of Firestorm. Bleeding Cool nabbed the first look. I would say it's certainly drastic in some ways but still recognizably Firestorm. The character has always been one of the more popular second tier ones on the DC roster. What do you make of his new look? The new comic will be called The Fury Of Firestorm and will be written by Ethan Van Scriver and Gail Simone, and drawn by Yildiray Cinar. Here is what Simone had to say about it via her Twitter .. All I’m going to say is, honest to god, this is one...

Some of the bigger news on Cbm this week has not been movie related, but DC's decision to restart the clock on it's entire roster, beginning again at #1st issues. Below is the new character design for Firestorm by Ethan Van Sciver and Moose Baumann... All I’m going to say is, honest to god, this is one of the most amazing books I’ve ever worked on in any capacity.

We’ve received all the covers for DC Comics August solicitations, and Flashpoint promises that worlds will live, worlds will die, and the DC Universe will never be the sa– oh, sorry, that was the tagline for Crisis On Infinite Earths, back when I worked at Flashpoint. I’m so confused…
My favorite item for the month is pictured above, the Sergio Aragones version of Batman from Batman: Black & White. But there are some absolute art gems here, including Darwyn Cooke’s Jsa cover, and Frank Quitely’s redoing of Gil Kane and Murphy Anderson’s cover for Green Lantern #52.

Grant Morrison’s seminal run on the X-Men returns to print… and just in time for the new movie! Originally penned when the first X-Men film was reigniting the public’s favour with these long running characters, Morrison sought to incorporate new, modern elements while remaining true to the spirit of the earliest issues. What resulted was signature-style Morrison bizarre, which is to say, pure mutant gold.
Prior to the X-Men movie of 2000, Marvel had been battling with bankruptcy, and their once flagship X-Men series was struggling to capture fans’ interest. The debut and success of the film changed that, but the premier mutant super-team still felt out-dated and plodding when it came to their original format – the comic book. In stepped Grant Morrison and, now big name artists, Leinil Francis Yu, Frank Quitely, and Ethan Van Sciver.
Starting with modernizing the costumes, Morrison also shook up the X-Men legacy...

Dailyblam.com got a scan of the first image of Parallax, the deadly fish skeleton that, according to the site, is "An ancient horror, Parallax the living embodiment of fear, a demonic parasitic entity which would travel from world to world, causing entire societies to destroy themselves out of fear and paranoia. It is known to ravage planets and strike terror into the hearts of even the Guardians of the Universe."So the Green Lanterns can't kick a fish's ass? The "Emerald Twilight" storyline began in Green Lantern (vol. 3) #48 (January 1994). Following the complete destruction of his home...
