Glorious 39 marks acclaimed filmmaker Stephen Poliakoff’s return to the big screen after twelve long years and it is an epic triumph of ambition and craft, delivering a superb and engaging thriller of duplicity and deceit on the eve of World War II.

The uncertainty and tension of the late summer of 1939 is our scene and an intriguing and poignant journey into the darkness of war produces an unforgettable drama from a writer and director whose ability to illuminate the harrowing detail of betrayal and heartache has never been more potent.
The formidable cast, eager to work with Poliakoff in the first feature production for over a decade, is headed by Romola Garai, »

Cinema is filled with multi-talented young actors who bring to life all types of characters. Sometimes, a role is given to the wrong guy - just because he has the looks (pin-up pretty, looks awesome wearing trunks) and the connection (a powerful talent agent at his side). But when the role is given to the right guy - moviegoers get to witness something unique, memorable and powerful, even magical. Anyway, even the 'right guy' needs an agent, of course...

- - - Underrated versus Overrated: If you've watched Jumper, then you'll notice the difference between Jamie Bell and Hayden Christensen - Bell has undeniable screen presence, I can't say the same with Hayden. It could have been different if Tom Sturridge was retained to play Hayden's part. Anyway, who am I to argue? Christensen has more box office appeal than the relatively unknown Sturridge, but acting-wise?

The $25 million made-for-tv adaptation of Herman Melville’s iconic tale, Moby Dick, has added Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Charlie Cox (Stardust) and Donald Sutherland (It’s Donald Sutherland) to their already talented cast. As we’ve previously reported, William Hurt and Ethan Hawke have already signed on to star as the obsessive Captain Ahab (Hurt) and his unruly first officer, Starbuck (Hawke).
With Moby Dick being the most expensive production to date for Tele Munchen Group (Tmg), they’re leaving nothing to chance. Nigel Williams has penned the script with Mike Barker directing. Barker is best known for directing the critically acclaimed, Sea Wolf, while Williams famously wrote the script for the award-winning 2005 miniseries, Elizabeth I. Both Sea Wolf and Elizabeth I are Tmg productions.
Being a fan of the HBO series, Elizabeth I, and I’m interested in seeing what Williams will do with Melville’s novel. While I »

Even in Francois Ozon's disappointing first English language film Angel, I'm still enraptured by the magnificence of Romola Garai. If ever there is an actress who can do no wrong, even if the movie is an utter failure, Garai would be that actress. In Steven Poliakoff's Glorious 39, Garai continues to shine.

The story centres on Anne Keyes, the daughter of a traditional English family, played by Atonement star Garai. Poliakoff said he was excited to be making a film about "the extraordinary machinations that went on in British society on the eve of war".

David Tennant will be making an appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con later this month, amid speculation that he will star in a new Doctor Who movie.
We don't yet know if that will happen and if Tennant would reprise his Time Lord role on the big screen, but we do know the actor will make his final appearance as the Doctor in the last of three specials to air this year. Matt Smith will then take over the role.
And of course Tennant is now rumoured to be in line to play Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo del Toro's two-part film version of The Hobbit, with other candidates reported to be James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe. We should hear more about casting for that at Comic-Con.
In the meantime, what else is coming up for the 38-year-old actor?
As I reported last week, he is to appear in St »
