To celebrate the release of Basket Case on Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray available from 29th April, we have a Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray to give away to a lucky winner!
The feature debut of director Frank Henenlotter, 1982’s Basket Case is a riotous and blood-spattered “midnight movie” experience, now presented for the first time ever on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.
Duane Bradley seems like a pretty ordinary guy. His formerly conjoined twin Belial, on the other hand, is a deformed creature who lives in a wicker basket. Arriving in the Big Apple and taking up a room at a seedy hotel, the pair set about hunting down and butchering the surgeons responsible for their separation.
Filmed on a shoestring budget against the backdrop of 1980s New York (where it played on the midnight movie circuit for over two-and-a-half years), Basket Case has clawed its way from...

As every new month brings an insane tidal wave of new additions to streaming libraries, it can be tough selecting the perfect watch. Even more so when it comes to Tubi, a streaming platform with a vast, overwhelming selection of titles that include everything from mainstream releases to obscure deep cuts once trapped on VHS.
Because the streaming service excels so well at this with a layout that isn’t always the easiest to navigate when hunting down rare titles or finding the best horror movies on Tubi, we’re here to help.
For February, we’re narrowing it down to twenty horror movies you should watch, from recent gems to required viewing from horror masters. More specifically, this list avoids too many of the obvious classics, like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (also streaming on Tubi), to instead offer a wider variety slightly off the beaten path.

Well, it’s that time of the year. It’s the holidays! Bring on the short days, long nights, and bitter cold! Don’t forget the family dysfunction, either.
No horror trilogy captures familial dysfunction quite like Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case Trilogy – the story of mild mannered Duane Bradley (Kevin Van Hentenryck) and his temperamental, hideously deformed twin brother, Belial.
The original film is a renegade cheapy, filmed on location (sometimes illegally) in New York City. It’s gritty and grimy and full of no-budget charisma. Since its release in 1982, Basket Case has gone on to become a drive-in and grindhouse classic.
The success of the film gave Henenlotter the opportunity to make sequels, and that he did! Basket Case 2 saw a bigger budget, more creature make-ups (thanks to genre staple and frequent Henenlotter collaborator Gabe Bartalos), and it expanded upon the world of the first film while also...

Zach Cregger’s Barbarian is one of the surprise horror hits of the year. Combining wicked twists, an unorthodox structure, and a dash of good humor, Barbarian became a word-of-mouth hit that’s now finding an even wider audience thanks to streaming on HBO Max. Fun, but still unsettling at times, Barbarian strikes a campy horror tone that’s both refreshingly irreverent and also cinematically satisfying.
With Spooky Season heading to a close, and Halloween right around the corner, you might be looking for more films that scratch this camp horror itch. If you’re looking for self-serious horror films, this isn’t the list for you. But if you’re looking for something that inspires laughter while you’re watching through the cracks in your fingers, something decidedly Barbarian-esque, check out these creepy classics below.

Creature features have an unrivaled ability to straddle genres, often combining the best of thrills and frights, science fiction, and black comedy, sometimes inadvertently. Some succeed better than others. Weak scripts, shoddy effects, and monsters who don't deliver on scares are all components that separate the best monster movies from the other guys. Luckily, with the right combination of cheesy dialogue and wonky technical effects, you can accidentally stumble upon some of the best the genre offers. A shark hellbent on revenge? Check. Deadly slugs? Yeah, I guess. Murder turtles? Okay, sure. Often, the more ridiculous the logline, the bigger the payoff.
Films like "Jaws" and "Alien" introduced the standard for a monster movie: compelling characters, driving action, and some legitimately frightening foes. They inspired a gaggle of repeat offenders and exploiters. Bad shark movies are still being made, unable to understand how "Jaws" did it. Today, we're doing a...

“What’s in the basket? Easter eggs?”
Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case (1982) screens Midnights this weekend (February 22nd and 23rd) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Nite Grindhouse film series.
For those readers who may have existed under a rock over the last four decades—or, perhaps in a wicker basket, hiding yourselves from civilization—Basket Case is a zero-budget, Z-grade, grindhouse film. Most films that played the grindhouses of yesteryear didn’t intend on playing grindhouses; it’s just where they ended up. But Basket Case, by writer/director Frank Henenlotter, was intentionally made as a grindhouse film that would play in the grindhouses of 1980’s Time Square. In fact, that was Henenlotter’s only expectation for the film. His dream was to see his film up in lights at one of the theaters that he frequented throughout his youth.

It sometimes infuriates me that the same movies keep getting re-released over and over every few years. If you’ve been a movie fan since the 1980’s, like I have, you have probably experienced the same frustrations. First VHS, and the argument between VHS and Beta, which may have necessitated purchasing a film in both versions. Then hardcore fans may have transitioned to Laserdisc. DVD then became the way to go but was followed by HD DVD and Blu-Ray. It’s entirely possible to own the same film in multiple formats, and sometimes the same film in the same format because you want certain special features. It seems I am constantly upgrading to the next version, which promises the best available. I know, I know…it’s mostly just a marketing ploy to get you to part with your hard-earned cash. 20th anniversary discs, 25th anniversary discs,...

Classic Midnite Cult movies were a mini-phenomenon chosen by the public, created only by word of mouth approval. Frank Henenlotter’s wild ‘n’ weird ‘separated at birth’ story is a thematic mashup of horror ideas, plunked down in the middle of America’s sleaze capital, 42nd street in the early 1980s. The audience-pleasing telepathic siblings Duane and Belial look fantastic in a new MoMa restoration, and the extras let the flamboyant director recount a great making-of story. His first distributor decided to ‘fix’ the movie by removing most of the gore!

Not every monster and maniac gets to be on Hell's Mount Rushmore. Let's take a moment to remember some other awesome horror characters.
Dracula. Frankenstein. Jason Voorhees. Freddy Krueger. Michael Myers. Ashley J. Williams. Pinhead. Jack Skellington. The Great Pumpkin. These are names synonymous with October. They’re some of the icons of horror and/or Halloween. And you know what? We hear enough about them.
Let’s take a second to look at the second, third, and even fourth tier down. The unsung horror icons who don’t get the mainstream love like the A-list slashers. While there are many to discuss, we figured we’d cut it down to our 31 favorites from some crazy horror movies.

August 9th is an interesting day for horror home entertainment releases, as we have two titles I never could have imagined arriving on Blu-ray, and that’s always a great thing for fans.
Synapse Films has given both of Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case sequels an HD overhaul, and for those who may have missed the Turkish horror movie Baskin during its release earlier this year, Scream Factory and IFC Midnight have teamed up for the film’s Blu-ray / DVD combo pack, which arrives on Tuesday as well.
Other notable releases on August 9th include 11.22.63, Dark Waves, and Alone in the Ghost House.
Basket Case 2 (Synapse Films, Blu-ray)
Duane Bradley and his surgically-separated twin brother Belial return in this frightfully gory follow-up to Frank Henenlotter’s original monster movie classic, Basket Case. After surviving a fall from a hospital window, the two brothers become media targets.

My love of Basket Case didn’t officially occur until its sequel – when the deformed brother of Duane Bradley (Kevin VanHentenryck), Belial, finally met the “girl” of his dreams. However, the original Basket Case has a lot to offer, and I’ve chosen it for the second installment of Terror Tapes because for many of us, Basket Case (directed by Frank Henelotter) was the reason we fell in love with horror in the first place. You probably have memories of walking into the video store, stepping into the horror section and falling in love with the font on the video cover, dripping with blood, and a horrendous face peeking out from inside a basket. That was the Media Home VHS box. Or perhaps your video store carried the Palace Version VHS with Duane on the cover, carrying the basket, with some of the sleaziest signs from New York’s 42nd Street in the background.

Ultra low budget gore fest concerning socially awkward Duane Bradley who checks into a New York Hotel carrying a large mysterious basket. He has to take care of some unfinished business. The run-down seedy hotel is rather depressing and the mood is spare and desolate. There's a feeling of hopelessness in the decor from the shoddy furniture, to the front desk manager to the guests staying within. What's in the basket and why Duane is there are que…...

Some people just have a knack for certain things. Michael Jordan could play basketball like there was no tomorrow, Sam Kinison was a master of comedy, Bobby Fischer could hold his own in chess and Stu Ungar knew his way around a card table. In that vein Frank Henenlotter had his niche as well…making outrageously over-the-top and wildly entertaining films.
Anthology Film Archives is celebrating the career of Henenlotter on November 4-6 in New York City with a retrospective presentation of some of the writer/director’s most memorable works. The films to be screened are certainly standouts of ‘80s horror: Brain Damage, Frankenhooker, Basket Case and Basket Case 2. Quite the Murderers’ Row of celluloid!
And to add to the excitement of the three-day event, Frank Henenlotter himself will be in attendance for the screenings. You can get a chance to meet the man and ask him, “What...

“What’s in the basket?” is the constant refrain of Frank Henenlotter’s feature directorial debut, Basket Case, a cult film from 1981. Duane Bradley and his brother Belial are in New York City on a mission: to get revenge on the doctors who separated them as children.
No, they weren’t put into different foster homes. They were conjoined twins, and at the behest of their father were surgically separated. Did I mention that Belial is just a mass of flesh with two arms and a face that used to grow out of Duane’s side? And now Duane keeps him in a basket?
If I were to read this film’s synopsis I would instantly think that’s it’s nothing but campy fun, but it is surprisingly more than that. Kevin Van Hentenryck plays Duane with a great deal of care, that isn’t typical of this kind of production.

That headline nearly brought a tear to my eye. Image Entertainment and the good folks at Something Weird Video are preparing to release the remastered version of director Frank Henenlotter’s trash classic “Basket Case” on Blu-ray this September. It will be extremely weird seeing this grisly little low-budget shocker in high definition, though I’m more than happy to pay a visit to Duane and Belial once again. Here’s quick synopsis via the official press release: Carrying a mysterious wicker basket wherever he goes, Duane Bradley checks into a flea-bag hotel in New York ’s Times Square . What’s in the basket, you ask? Why, it’s Duane’s hideously misshapen Siamese twin brother, Belial, who seems to wield some sort of odd control over his more normal looking brother. Together, they’re in town to hunt down and wreak havoc on the sick surgeons who separated them,...

Basket Case A young director by the name of Frank Henenlotter (Frankenhooker) came to New York with big ambition, a one of a kind vision and a tiny budget on which to make his unique brand of horror. The result of that endeavor was Basket Case, a horror film that has gained a cult following, two sequels and still has people talking about it 29 years after the fact! Basket Case vividly brought gore, sleaze, a twisted sense of humor, and even some animation to the screen, but most importantly it did something so completely different that it still stands out as a film unlike anything else in the horror genre. By going against the grain, Basket Case broke the mold. Now it is our pleasure to announce that Basket Case will finally be making its way to Blu-Ray!
