Meryl Streep will receive the honorary Palme d’Or on the opening night of the 77th edition of Cannes Film Festival, Variety has learned.
Luring the Oscar winner is yet another feat for this Cannes edition, which will bring together a flurry Hollywood legends. Notably, George Lucas will receive the honorary Palme d’Or during the closing ceremony; Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” and Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada” are playing in competition; and George Miller‘s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and Kevin Costner’s Western epic “Horizon, an American Saga” are playing out of competition. Streep will be also in good company at the festival with “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig serving as jury president. The pair worked together on “Little Women.”
The honorary tribute will mark Streep’s long-awaited return to Cannes after decades. It appears that her last trip to the festival dates back to Fred Schepisi...

Diane Kruger is re-teaming with her In the Fade director Fatih Akin on the new German period drama Amrum, which began principal photography in Hamburg today.
The film follows a family living in a small village on Amrum Island in rural northern Germany in early 1945, in the final days of World War II. Bohm had initially planned to direct the film himself before handing the reins over to Akin, who co-wrote the Amrum screenplay.
The movie is a coming-of-age story of Nanning, a 12-year-old boy (played by Jasper Billerbeck) and his best friend Hermann (Kian Köppke). Laura Tonke (When Will It Be Again Like It Never Was Before) plays Nanning’s mother, Hille Hagener. Kruger plays Tessa Bendixen, a farmer’s wife. Once upon a time … in war-torn London, Winston Churchill found himself face to face with the potential end of England as he knew it. The Blitz was in full effect. Europe was slowly being crushed under Hitler’s boot heels. German U-boats had turned the Atlantic into a graveyard, effectively crippling the Allied war effort. The prime minister needed an effective counterpunch.
So he asked several officials within the nation’s intelligence community, including a naval officer named Ian Fleming, to help recruit soldiers, secret agents, scallywags, and — God help...

This extension in runtime hints at a deep dive into the film’s complex themes of grief and loss. It’ll soon be time to pack your tuxes and/or high heels and wonder “why the heck does it get so hot at 6:30 pm, just when I’m lining up for the 7:15 pm screening?” The eyes of the entertainment world will once again turn toward the French Riviera for the 77th Annual Cannes Film Festival.
The main slate announcement was made early Thursday morning, confirming many suspicions, and offering much excitement for hardcore cinephiles. For those with more mainstream tastes—and an eye toward what will still be in play come next year’s Oscars—here are some highlights.
Certainly, the biggest event screening will be the public’s first look at Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” a self-financed behemoth that he’s been dreaming about for decades. The director/vintner is a two-time winner of Cannes’s Palme D’Or—for “The Conversation” in 1974 and “Apocalypse Now...

The first-look image of Sebastian Stan as a young, pre-tv star and pre-president Donald Trump in buzzy upcoming biopic “The Apprentice” has been revealed.
Ali Abbasi’s feature — which has just been announced as part of the 2024 Cannes main competition — charts Trump’s ascent to power through what is described as a “Faustian deal” with the influential right-wing lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn (seen in the still being portrayed by Jeremy Strong). As the synopsis reads, “‘The Apprentice’ is a dive into the underbelly of the American empire.”
The hot button film, written by Gabe Sherman and likely to cause a stir on both sides of the political fence, also stars Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump and Martin Donovan as Fred Trump Sr.
Producers include Daniel Bekerman for Scythia Films (Canada), Jacob Jarek for Profile Pictures (Denmark), Ruth Treacy and Julianne Forde for Tailored Films (Ireland), Abbasi and Louis Tisne...

David Cronenberg is set to release his most personal film yet with “The Shrouds.” But it won’t involve Léa Seydoux.
The supernatural drama stars Vincent Cassel as a grieving businessman who builds a state-of-the-art device that helps people reconnect with the dead, unraveling memories of his late wife in the process. Cronenberg was inspired to write and direct the film, originally conceived as a series at Netflix before the streamer passed, after the death of his own wife, film editor Carolyn Cronenberg, in 2017.
Cronenberg originally cast Léa Seydoux as the co-lead opposite Vincent Cassel. The director first worked with Seydoux on “Crimes of the Future,” where she starred as one-half of a performance artist couple who perform surgeries before live audiences, opposite Viggo Mortensen. But while the Canadian filmmaker’s 2022 production was a mix of English-speaking actors from Europe and the U.S., “The Shrouds” proved a different challenge...

French director Yann Gozlan is set to reunite with Pierre Niney, the French star of his two most successful movies “Un homme idéal” and “Black Box,” for his next film, “Gourou.”
“Gourou” is being co-produced by Wassim Beji at Wy Productions, the Paris-based company behind “Black Box and “Un Homme Ideal,” and Niney’s banner Ninety Films.
While the plot is currently under wraps, the project is being teased as a deep dive into the world of coaching and follows the rise of a personal development guru who turns out to be toxic. The script is by Jean-Baptiste Delafon, whose credits include “Of Money and Blood” which played at Venice, and Gozlan.
One of France’s most bankable and busiest French actors, Niney won a Cesar Award for his performance as French fashion legend Yves Saint Laurent in Jalil Lespert’s biopic in 2015, and went on to work with Anne Fontaine...

At last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Leonardo DiCaprio, Harrison Ford and Scarlett Johansson hit the red carpet to premiere their latest big movies. But Hollywood may have a much lighter presence at the 2024 edition of one of the world’s most notable film festivals.
The culprit is the combination of last year’s actors and writers strikes, which created production delays, as well as a tough economy that’s leading studios to tighten the purse-strings. But there will still be stars on the Croisette, in addition to “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig, who will be presiding over the jury.
Based on intelligence from industry insiders on both sides of the Atlantic, the upcoming edition will have a larger emphasis on European auteurs, along the lines of Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” which were each nominated for five Oscars.

Bras are out. Nipples are in. Saint Laurent’s fall/winter 2024-2025 runway show was the place to prove it. Several celebs, like Zoë Kravitz, went braless for the presentation. Others, like Olivia Wilde, bared it all through their sheer tops. Is it the year of the nipple? The stars say yes.

Zoë Kravitz exemplified a more understated version of the bra-less trend. The Batman star wore a very thin nut-brown tank top and a matching skirt. Her top was nearly sheer, showing off her curves.
Kravitz demonstrated the nipple-forward trend some believe was spurred by Skims’ nipple bra, which sold out in less than a month when it debuted in late 2023. With Kravitz’s natural accessories showing through, the 35-year-old donned a simple black belt, dangly earrings, sheet tights, and chocolate-colored pumps.

The life of Rosa Bonheur, a trailblazing feminist and artist who rose to fame in 19th century France, will be played by Melanie Laurent in a sprawling period movie directed by Fabienne Berthaud.
“Rosa Bonheur” is being produced by Carole Scotta, Barbara Letellier and Caroline Benjo at Haut et Court, the company behind “Coco Before Chanel” and “The Night of the 12th,” which won a raft of Cesar Awards last year.
The biopic reteams Haut et Court with Berthaud following her previous films, notably Diane Kruger starrer ”Lily Sometimes,” which played at Cannes’ Director’s fortnight in 2010, and 2019’s ”A Bigger World,” starring Cecile de France, which bowed at Venice. Haut et Court will also distribute “Rosa Bonheur” in France.

Ask anyone who works in the fashion industry, and they’ll be quick to tell you it’s a competitive, sometimes brutal business — and they wouldn’t dream of doing anything else. Another truism: The creatives behind it outwardly seem to possess spines made of steel, and yet every element of their soul will go into a collection.
That was undeniably true on the first day of New York Fashion Week, when Prabal Gurung presented a wholly poetic Fall Winter 2024 collection inspired by personal loss. The Singapore-born Gurung was raised by Nepali parents in Katmandu, and he’s often said that he knew from an early age that he wanted to come to the U.S. and launch his own label; that decision, however, strained his relationship with his father, who died this past November. “I always had a fraught relationship with him, and now I had to go back...

Seven months have gone by since we heard that The Shrouds, the latest thriller from legendary director David Cronenberg, had wrapped production. 2022 marked a big screen comeback for David Cronenberg with “Crimes Of The Future,” his first movie since 2014’s “Maps To The Stars.” And in the build-up to his 2022 film’s Cannes premiere, Cronenberg already had his next project lined up for bidders. Now it’s time for “The Shrouds” to hit the festival circuit this year. There’s no news about a premiere date yet, but Bloody Disgusting reports that Cahiers du Cinéma has a first-look image for the film, so maybe another debut on the Croisette is in the works?

Everybody’s forgotten a new work from David Cronenberg is likely just months from debut, and I suspect The Shrouds will only land all the harder for it. Early word’s placed it among the strangest, saddest, toughest films David Cronenberg’s ever made––a reckoning with the passing of his wife dressed in characteristically fantastic sci-fi conceits. To quote star Diane Kruger, it “might be his most personal film, because it talks about him and the passing of his wife. I knew it was so close to him and he was a little bit detached because of it. I could feel him being so vulnerable.” This, needless to say, all portends one of the great films of 2024.
We now have, courtesy Cahiers du cinéma and Twitter user TerenceYiBo, our first look at the film, featuring Vincent Cassel, Kruger, and (seemingly) the protagonist’s “device to connect with the dead inside a burial.

Pierre Morrel's 2008 film "Taken" is brazenly morally irresponsible.
"Taken" was not so much a thriller as an indulgent "dad fantasy," rooted in xenophobia and male sexual hysterics. The lead character, Bryan Mills, played by a wholly devoted and utterly capable Liam Neeson, was a divorced dad of a teenage girl named Kim (Maggie Grace) who saw his clout as a parent disappearing into the wealthy black hole of a cold-shouldered ex-wife (Famke Janssen) and her attentive new husband (Xander Berkeley). Bryan is a former CIA agent, and his job kept him away from home enough to damage his marriage. When Kim announces that she and a friend are going on an international holiday together, Bryan warns her that such an excursion is dangerous; kidnappers, he knows, often target traveling American teenage girls and sell them into sexual slavery. It sounds paranoid and everyone dismisses him.
Perhaps predictably, Kim is almost...

Welcome to Wtf Happened to Troy? If we’re talking about the best historical cinematic epics of all time, what are the first few titles that leap to mind? Kubrick’s Spartacus? Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia? Maybe Gibson’s Braveheart? Whatever the answer is, chances are, despite earning half a billion dollars worldwide, Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy isn’t likely the first movie that tops the list. But why is that? After all, Troy was not only a monumental box office hit but also fared pretty well among critics and general filmgoers alike. Moreover, with Homer’s timeless tale of The Iliad guiding the way, it would seem as though Troy would resonate longer in the public’s collective consciousness and rank among the all-time best and most durable biographical epics. Yet, despite the impressive size, scale, and scope of the big-screen spectacle that chronicles the intense war between...
