JJ Abrams, an EW Entertainer of the Decade, on 'Star Trek,' 'Lost,' and his collaborators

7 December 2009 4:46 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Alias. Lost. Fringe. Mission Impossible 3. Cloverfield. Star Trek. All in all, writer/director/producer JJ Abrams had a pretty sweet decade. That’s why we at Entertainment Weekly named him one of the Entertainers of the Decade in our Best of the Decade issue, on stands now. In particular, 2009 was a peak year for the 43-year-old Abrams thanks to Star Trek, a global box-office smash that revitalized a lagging pop culture franchise. Abrams — an unabashed Star Wars guy — had been a Trek shrugger himself, but fell in love with the world the more he worked on it. “I didn’t »

Joss Whedon has done so much more than just work in the TV and film industry. He's created entire meticulous universes for his characters and fans to explore, and that's no easy task. Thankfully the man is about to get his due.

Whedon is a producer, writer, director, and creator for TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly," and "Dollhouse" with film scripts including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Toy Story, Alien Resurrection and Titan A.E. He's penned the comic book series Fray and created and produced Internet series "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog."

J.J. Abrams' Next New Super Top Secret Project: 500 Rads?

4 November 2009 2:16 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Can you remember back to July 3rd, 2007? You were probably sitting in a theater, and some random trailer started playing that had footage from a surprise birthday party for some guy named Rob. That was the start of Cloverfield. They hadn't even shot any real footage, it was a super secret project, and that first trailer captured everyone's interest. Jump ahead a few years and now J.J. Abrams is done with Star Trek. We don't yet know if he's directing the sequel and his go-to guys from Cloverfield (Matt Reeves, Drew Goddard) are both off doing other projects. So could he be working on another secret project? One called 500 Rads? Pajiba (via SlashFilm) claims to have some information regarding this secret project. "J.J. Abrams and his production company, Bad Robot, are secretly developing a movie called 500 Rads." They go on to say the budget is supposedly around $25 »

A Late Check-In for 'Cabin'

12 October 2009 7:30 PM, PDT | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

Long story made short: Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's Cabin in the Woods has been pushed back a year by MGM. The original date for the horror comedy was Feburary 5, 2010. But now you'll be checking into this Cabin on April 15, 2011. Why? The reason after the jump. MGM reps have told our friends at Shock Till You Drop that "the early response to the film has been phenomenal and they're going to spend six months or so converting the picture to 3-D." Never mind the fact that audiences aren't nearly as into 3-D as studio chiefs (because the format can't be easily pirated), this is sure to piss off the legions of Whedon fans who feel let down by Dollhouse and want some »

Whedon's 'Cabin' Delayed a Year for 3-D Conversion

12 October 2009 5:28 PM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

With 3-D all the rage, MGM announced over the weekend that Joss Whedon’s original thriller, The Cabin in the Woods, will be delayed from February 5 2010 to January 14 2011 to allow it to be upgraded to a three-dimensional chiller.

According to Shock Til You Drop, the film, co-written and directed by Drew Goddard (Cloverfield), will require six months for the conversion. The movie stars Bradley Whitford (The West Wing), Richard Jennings (Burn After Reading), Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek), and Whedon regulars Amy Acker (Angel, Dollhouse) and Tom Lenk (Buffy) »

‘The Cabin in the Woods’ Delay Brings 3D

12 October 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

MGM Studios has decided to push back Joss Whedon’s The Cabin in the Woods by nearly a year. The horror film was set to open Feb. 5, 2010 but will now open Jan. 14, 2011.  Don’t worry though, this scheduling adjustment is for good reasons instead of bad.

First off, the film has been testing very well with audiences. No surprise there, Joss Whedon wrote it. This in turn lead MGM to the second reason for the delay, spending six months converting  The Cabin in the Woods to 3D. As an added bonus this puts the film on track to open during a four day weekend which could help ticket sales.

Given MGM’s recent struggles financially it’s good to hear they may have a hit on their hands.  While delaying the film is not the best situation better for them to take the time and do The Cabin in the »

The Cabin In The Woods Delayed For 3-D Conversion

12 October 2009 5:39 AM, PDT | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Word is now spreading that the Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard project, The Cabin in the Woods, is moving its release date from February, 2010 to January 11, 2011. Apparently, the folks at MGM think that the film could use a conversion to 3-D.

Fans will have to wait another year before they get a chance to see the hotly anticipated horror flick. The move is the first of its kind, at least when considering live action. Although it might be an afterthought, the people at MGM think that the conversion will pay off with higher ticket sales. The only other films to have gone through this type of 3-D operation are Pixar's recently re-released Toy Story and Toy Story 2.

MGM is taking a risk in delaying the release, as it will be the first post-production, already shot, live-action 3-D film conversion. The move is likely to be in response to the string »

No Cabin In The Woods til 2011

Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy and Firefly and all around fanboy favourite, has spent much of the past 6 months hard at work on Cabin In The Woods, a secretive horror project co-written by Cloverfield scribe Drew Goddard. Test screenings have been overwhelmingly positive, so MGM are doing what movie studios are prone to doing when faced with a home-run - they're delaying it by 11 months. Originally scheduled for release in February 2010, Cabin won't now be released until January 2011. Officially, the studio line is that they want...

Joss Whedon's Cabin in the Woods Pushed to 2011

12 October 2009 3:02 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The Cabin in the Woods, a twisted and unusual take on the usual formula, was written by Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Serenity's Joss Whedon and directed by Cloverfield screenwriter Drew Goddard. The movie was initially set for release on February 5, 2010, but ShockTillYouDrop reports that MGM Studios has decided to push the movie back to January 14, 2011.

The good news is MGM claims the response to the movie has been "phenomenal," and will take the next six months to convert the movie into 3-D. The bad news is that Whedon fans will have to wait another year for the highly anticipated horror flick. To make matters worse, Cabin actor Brian White (Fighting) told Moviehole the movie is terrific.

He's created a new take on the "Cabin in the Woods" formula and it's incredibly funny, it's gory, and it's smart. Any genre fan is going to really, really going to love this. »

From Saw to Chainsaw—We're smack dab in the middle of a 3-D renaissance right now, and for every exciting project like Avatar, there are party-poopers who are just using the technology as a fad to follow rather than a storytelling device. With the success of The Final Destination 3-D, we're now seeing horror movies lining up to jump out of the screen. Have a look at which are coming, and find out how being a screenwriter can get you out of sticky situations.

"Cabin In The Woods" Bumped a Year, Going 3-D

MGM has announced this afternoon that the Joss Whedon scripted high-concept horror/slasher "The Cabin In The Woods" has been bumped from it's planned February 2010 date and will now arrive in theaters on January 14, 2011. Another surprise is that they'll be turning the Drew Goddard ("Cloverfield") directed project 3-D for its release. Joss Whedon's 'Cabin' Delayed a Year to Go 3-D

10 October 2009 10:32 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Not much is known about Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's pet horror project, The Cabin in the Woods, beyond a few snarky posters released at last summer's Comic-Con and a Feburary 5th, 2010 release date. Now, MGM is apparently so pleased with whatever the two are cooking up that they want to convert the already shot film to 3-D -- a process that has the release tentatively rescheduled for January 14th, 2011.

That's right, a full year's delay. Not the best of omens for any film. However, in the name of all that is silver lining, we turn to our trusted colleagues over at Chud and Hitfix for their thoughts. Devin was impressed by the footage he saw in a recent visit to the editing bay, while Drew claims that the script had potential to break out in however many dimensions. Neither has seen the finished film, of course, and both admit as much, »

'Cabin in the Woods' Bumped to 2011, Going 3-D

10 October 2009 8:16 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Another drastic shift in the release schedule will shake up the early months of 2010. The Cabin in the Woods, the Joss Whedon-produced horror movie directed by Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard will no longer be released on February 5th, but instead, MGM will move it...all the way to January 14, 2011.

You might wonder why the film would be delayed an entire year, and according to Shock Till You Drop, MGM is making the move to transfer the film to 3-D. The studio has apparently been encouraged by early reactions to the film, so clearly the thing to do is wait a year to release it and turn a movie that wasn't made to be 3-D into a 3-D frightfest.

I don't know why you'd choose first quarter 2011 even if you're going to upgrade it to 3-D; by the studio's own admission, it's a six-month process. So why not take a »

Getting 3-D Treatment, 'The Cabin in the Woods' Pushed to Early 2011

9 October 2009 11:19 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

MGM Studios has delayed the theatrical release of "The Cabin in the Woods" for nearly a year. Shock Till You Drop (Styd) reported that the horror movie which was originally slated for release in cinemas across the U.S. on February 5, 2010, has been pushed to a new date in 2011 for a 3-D treatment.

"Cabin" will make its debut over the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend, on January 14 to be exact. It means that the movie directed by "Cloverfield" screenwriter Drew Goddard will open in theaters a week before the fourth "Underworld" movie, "Underworld 4", is scheduled to come out.

As for the reason behind the move, MGM reps explained, as reported by Styd, that the early response to the film has been phenomenal and prompted the studio to give it a 3-D treatment. MGM is expected to spend six months or so converting "Cabin" to 3-D.

Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods Delayed Until 2011 for 3-D Conversion

9 October 2009 10:52 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Word has been trickling out about the Joss Whedon/Drew Goddard co-written project Cabin in the Woods for some time now, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't getting psyched for the film's release this February (on my birthday, no less!). Now according to our friends over at ShockTillYouDrop, we'll have to wait a lot longer to see the finished product: Word is that the film, which is also being directed by Goddard, is being delayed until January 11, 2011 while MGM converts it to 3-D. Apparently, it's not a punishing delay---mgm reports that it's actually tracking quite well---but for some reason they've deemed a 3-D conversion necessary. I suppose with the box office success of recent 3-D horror films like My Bloody Valentine 3-D and The Final Destination, not to mention animated features like Monsters vs. Aliens and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, studios are beginning to see »

Joss Whedon's Cabin in the Woods Pushed Back to Early 2011!

9 October 2009 7:32 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Didn't see this coming! A few sites, including Styd and Collider, are reporting (with confirmation from MGM) that Joss Whedon's new horror movie Cabin in the Woods has been delayed an entire year. It was originally set for release on February 5th, 2010 next year but has been pushed back to January 14th, 2011. Why? Well apparently the "early response to the film has been phenomenal and they're going to spend six months or so converting the picture to 3-D." While that's all good, I also think MGM is trying to rollover their marketing budget on this movie to 2011, because they're not doing too well financially at the moment. Cabin in the Woods is the very secretive horror project written by "Firefly" and "Buffy" creator Joss Whedon and directed by Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard. Some posters for the movie first popped up at Comic-Con this year and we've heard bits »

Whedon’s Cabin moves ahead a year…into the third dimension

9 October 2009 6:04 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Various sources have been reporting today that the Joss Whedon-produced horror film The Cabin In The Woods has had its release date moved by a year by MGM, and Collider.com has the reasons why. It all has to do with the fact that when the movie does open, it’ll be in 3-D.

Not only does the studio need six months to dimensionally convert the film (which was shot in 2-D), but there are so many 3-D flicks coming out in 2010 that there was simply no slot that year where it could get the required screens. (New Line recently dropped its 3-D Friday The 13th Part 2 into August 13.) So Cabin got shifted from next February 5 all the way to January 14, 2010. That Martin Luther King Day weekend is also a good-luck slot for Drew Goddard, who directed Cabin from his and Whedon’s screenplay; Cloverfield, which he scripted, opened »
