The Toronto Film Festival is increasingly lending its audience and celebrity luster to indie TV producers eyeing new small-screen financing models as the era of easy streaming money goes away.
“It’s about the whole package. It’s our curatorial stamp of approval. It’s access to decision-makers. It’s access to mentors, and it’s something you can put on your résumé for years to come,” Geoff Macnaughton, senior director of industry and theatrical programming, tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Macnaughton, who also programs the Primetime showcase of high-end TV series at TIFF, is getting set to reveal the lineup for his section’s 2023 edition as the marquee film festival gets deeper into premiering high-end international TV shows in front of cinema audiences.

Innovative methods of getting projects into production was the subject of discussion for a group of top U.S. and European producers, networks and streamers during a debate at the Avp Summit in Trieste.
The panel brought together the likes of Amplify Pictures Cco Rachel Eggebeen, Media Res International head Lars Blomgren, Cattleya Co-CEO Marco Chimenz, Nicola Serra from Palomar, Prime Video’s Davide Nardini and France Télévisions’ Head of International Scripted Series Morad Koufane, who each outlined how their operations could help projects get financed and into production.
Kicking off the session, Eggebeen talked up Amplify’s model of “enhanced acquisitions.” This means independently financing, developing and green light a project for production before selling it to a buyer, who will still be able to “have their fingerprints on it and be involved.”

Exclusive: Netflix’s first German original series Dark was always going to be a tough act to follow for its creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. The mind-bending, time-weaving show debuted on the platform in December 2017 and attracted a global fanbase across a run of three taut, satisfying seasons until it concluded in June 2020. Alongside critical acclaim, the series is also understood to have been a viewing hit for Netflix, which doesn’t disclose specific numbers but did reveal back in October that it was the streamer’s third most watched international series in America.
In 2018, Friese and Odar inked a significant overall deal with Netflix that sees them exclusively create projects for the streamer across an initial five-year period. Post-Dark, their next show will be 1899, an ambitious period mystery set on a migrant boat sailing from Europe to the United States. Overshadowed by a grisly, racially motivated shooting in western Germany and the growing pains of new festival leadership, this year’s Berlinale served to illuminate the market dynamics and global issues set to impact the international film and television industry in the run-up to Cannes — provided coronavirus stays away from the Croisette.
The Berlin festival, which ran Feb. 20 to March 1, boasted only a handful of buzzy deals. The upcoming Jessica Chastain- and Eddie Redmayne-fronted “The Good Nurse” reportedly sold in the range of $25 million to Netflix. IFC Films nabbed U.S. rights to Christian Petzold’s fantasy romance “Undine,” while Cohen Media Group took North American rights to Vadim Perelman’s Holocaust drama “Persian Lessons.” Terms of those two deals were not announced.
But few films were as beloved as “Gunda,” a black-and-white documentary about frolicking farm animals. Devoid of voiceover and score, the film titillated critics and buyers alike.

Netflix is planning to begin sharing more data with producers regarding the performance of their content on its platform, a panel at Berlin Film Festival heard today.
The streamer’s famously opaque strategy of keeping data strictly for in-house usage has begun to soften recently. This week, Netflix said it would begin to release lists of the top-10 most watched titles each day across all territories, giving the public a clearer idea of what shows are popular. The streamer does not specify exactly how it arrives at its figures.
“We’re super excited about testing out the idea of the top tens,” said Rachel Eggebeen, director of international originals at Netflix, on stage. “It’s fantastic for our local-language programming because often those shows are in the top ten.”

Anke Engelke will play a funeral eulogy speaker who loses faith in her work and tries to sabotage her husband’s funeral in “The Last Word,” an original comedy drama out of Germany for Netflix.
Pantaleon Films is making the six-part series with Aron Lehmann and Carlos V. Irmscher attached as showrunners. The pair co-wrote the series with authors Nora Valo and Carolina Zimmermann. Lehmann will also direct the show.
“Just like in real life, drama and humor are clashing constantly,” Engelke said of the series. “Family and relationships, loss and grief, life and death, the absurdities of life, the rediscovery of strength and lust for life, it is all in there – so beautiful it makes you cry.”
“The Last Word” is based on an idea of Thorsten Merten. The series is the latest in a growing roster of German originals from Netflix as the streamer increasingly looks to local production.

Chad Hamilton, Ben Cottner and Rachel Eggebeen are overseeing for Vantage.
Glosserman most recently co-wrote and directed the horror comedy Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, which had its premiere at last year's South by Southwest Film Festival. Anchor Bay recently released the movie theatrically.
Glosserman is repped by Endeavor and Nine Yards.
