The true story of the late-blooming musical duo, Emerson Brothers, at the heart of Bill Pohlad’s elegiac yet bizarrely dull “Dreamin’ Wild” goes a bit like that of Rodriguez, the Michigan-based musician followed in the Oscar-winning documentary, “Searching for Sugarman.”
Growing up amid modest means at their hardworking family’s Washington State farm, Donnie and Joe Emerson were two teenagers in love with making music. A real talent often charges family-wide operations of this sort—in the Emerson clan that was Donnie, a gifted songwriter on his guitar and an expressive soloist to boot, with boundless aspirations for the future of his still young life.
On the drums was his older sibling Joe, for whom music had never been an all-or-nothing pursuit. Through much sacrifice and support from their caring family the two released their only record, “Dreamin’ Wild,” in the late ’70s, a soulful, genuinely beautiful album doomed with the dead-end,...

Dreams are hard. Most of us wake up. And what a sad thing that is. Dreamin’ Wild, written and directed by Bill Pohlad and based on the article “Fruitland” by Steven Kurutz, aims to explore that ache through the lens of a quite-improbable true story. But first, some context. In the late ’70s, Donnie and Joe Emerson were teenagers living on their parent’s farm in Fruitland, Washington when they made an album called Dreamin’ Wild. Joe played the drums, and Donnie did everything else. Sadly, the records went largely unsold and un-listened. Three decades later, an anthropology student named Jack Fleischer discovered the album, listened to it, and loved it. This spurred an underground positive response to the album among collectors and music lovers alike. Finally it got into the hands of Matt Sullivan, co-owner of Light in the Attic, a reissue label that specializes in giving under-heard gems a fresh,...

Roxie Washington, the mother of George Floyd’s daughter, is planning to sue Kanye West for disparaging and false comments he made about the murder by police of Floyd.
Washington and attorneys at both the Witherspoon Law Group and Dixon & Dixon Attorney At Law will be suing West, also known as Ye, for 250 million.
West made these recent comments on an interview with N.O.R.E. on his Revolt.TV podcast Drink Champs. Along with claiming that Floyd died from a fentanyl overdose, which was proven untrue by a medical examiner, West also made more antisemitic remarks.
Floyd was murdered when former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for almost 10 minutes while the man was handcuffed, with the death officially being ruled a homicide. Chauvin is serving 21 years in prison at Fci Tucson and has an estimated release time of December, 2035.

Not many films hit an emotional crescendo around the publication of a Pitchfork review, but Bill Pohlad’s “Dreamin’ Wild” is sufficiently sincere and embedded in musical nerdery to make it work. As onetime brother act Donnie and Joe Emerson huddle with their family around a 30-years-late evaluation of the album they recorded as teenagers, one particular critical reference sends them giddily reeling: “To twist a Brian Wilson phrase,” it reads, “[the album] is a godlike symphony to teenhood.” For fortysomething Donnie, who has spent his whole adult life scrambling for anyone to listen to his music — let alone love it — the mere mention of his musical hero in relation to his work is a crowning triumph: Donnie, as played by a typically disheveled, downcast Casey Affleck, looks briefly, guardedly happy for a moment, and this often melancholic film is suddenly suffused with well-being.

It may have been music critic Robert Christgau who once observed that the hardest works to write about are the ones that earn a B+, or are just on the cusp of A-. Mind you, that might have been said by Roger Ebert or a critic for The Hollywood Reporter or any reviewer since the beginning of time. The point is, it’s the imperceptible flaws that curb enthusiasm which are almost as impossible to define as whatever makes something extraordinary. What is the ineffable deficit between very good and great?
In a sense, Dreamin’ Wild is about that margin of error. Based on a true story recounted in a work of journalism called Fruitland by Steven Kurutz, it’s a tale of two musician brothers, Don and Joe Emerson (Casey Affleck and Walton Goggins, respectively). In the early 1980s as teenagers, the boys made an album,...

New York -- Robert Vaughn, the debonair, Oscar-nominated actor whose many film roles were eclipsed by his hugely popular turn in television’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E., has died. He was 83.
Vaughn died Friday morning after a brief battle with acute leukemia, according to his manager, Matthew Sullivan.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. was an immediate hit, particularly with young people, when it debuted on NBC 1964. It was part of an avalanche of secret agent shows (I Spy, Mission: Impossible, Secret Agent), spoofs (Get Smart), books (The Spy Who Came in From the Cold) and even songs (Secret Agent Man) inspired by the James Bond films.
Vaughn’s urbane superspy Napoleon Solo teamed with Scottish actor David McCallum’s Illya Kuryakin, a soft-spoken, Russian-born agent.

She's one of the busiest young actresses in Hollywood, scoring choice parts like that of the iconic Snow White in "Mirror Mirror" as well as several other high-profile roles. But just who is Lily Collins, and why is she so hot right now?
"Lily Collins is a film producer’s dream -- cute, talented and level-headed," says Amy Wilkinson, editor of the film blog at Hollywood Crush. Here's a pretty strange idea that seems wacky enough that it just might work. As many people know, Nicolas Cage is a big Superman fan, so much so that he actually named his son Kal-El. At one point, he also owned the coveted first appearance of Superman in comics, the ultra rare Action Comics #1. Unfortunately, the comic book was stolen from him back in 2000, and was not recovered until last year, when it was found in a storage locker in the San Fernando Valley. The actual perpetrators were never caught, and the details of the theft are still unclear. Now Lionsgate wants to turn this true story into a fictional quirky caper film called simply Action No. 1. The big question is, will Nicolas Cage actually play himself? According to THR, Lionsgate has acquired Action No. 1, a script written by Reno 911! creators Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon. The plot revolves...

HollywoodChicago.com recently discussed the keep-it-real film with “The Social Network” Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg and “Parks and Recreation” star Aziz Ansari. But overall, they struggled to sell a middle-of-the-road gag reel as the top-notch comedy they’d like it to be.

HollywoodChicago.com: The humor in “30 Minutes or Less” comes from keeping it real and being clueless. Like when Jesse Eisenberg’s character has a bomb strapped to his chest and he has no idea what to do. So, of course, he turns to Wikipedia.
Aziz Ansari: Yes, we had the same thought when we shot the film.

The players: Director: Ruben Fleischer, Writers: Michael Diliberti, Matthew Sullivan, Cast: Jessie Eisenberg, Danny McBride, Aziz Ansari
Fact of interest: This is the third Jessie Eisenberg movie in a row in which his character makes a reference to Facebook.
The plot: Two enterprising criminals kidnap a pizza delivery guy, strap a bomb to his chest and make him rob a bank.
Our thoughts: So, you take a pretty high concept idea (criminals strap a bomb on a hapless victim and force him to commit a crime). Then you take that idea and turn it on its ear by casting three of the funniest comedic actors working today (Danny McBride, Aziz Ansari, and Nick Swardson) and anchor that with a recent Academy Award nominee (Jessie Eisenberg). In short, you have the making for a delicious stew of steaming awesomeness, am I right?...

Jesse Eisenberg and Danny McBride star in action comedy, 30 Minutes Or Less. Is it as good as director Ruben Fleischer's last film, Zombieland? Ron finds out...
When The Major (Fred Ward) won the lottery a few years ago, it made his life great. He bought a great house, a great home theater, an awesome negative-edge pool, and all the toys a man could possibly want. Unfortunately for The Major, you can't buy a good son. Instead, he's stuck with Dwayne (Danny McBride), who is as incompetent and lazy as The Major was driven during his career as a Marine.
While The Major has a great life, our hero Nick's life is terrible. He's a pizza delivery boy who spends all his time drinking beer and driving around in a battered, past-its-prime Mustang. He's at odds with his best friend Chet (Aziz Ansari), he's going nowhere in life, and he's...

Chicago – The new half-unfunny comedy “30 Minutes or Less” stands as a destructive come down for newly minted star Jesse Eisenberg following his high-profile role as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s “The Social Network”.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
That 2010 film only won three Oscars and racked up another 88 award wins and 79 nominations. Plus “The Social Network” grossed $224 million at the global box office on a production budget of $40 million. And yes, there’s a reason I’m discussing this past Eisenberg film more prominently so far in this review than his current film.
The disparity between those past award wins and that box-office success as compared to Eisenberg’s current film (he voiced the animated film “Rio” between the two) will be light years apart. No Oscar nominations will be earned for this new comedy from first-time writer Michael Diliberti, basically first-time scribe Matthew Sullivan and, most disappointingly, the director of...

30 Minutes or Less Directed by: Ruben Fleischer Written by: Michael Diliberti (screenplay), Michael Diliberti & Matthew Sullivan (story) Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride, Nick Swardson, Michael Peña Jokes are overrated. The best comedies cull humor from character flaws, and while the cast of 30 Minutes or Less has those to spare, human foibles have little bearing on the way these people behave. Instead, it's about one-liners and crass one-upmanship in a string of exponentially less believable scenarios. First time screenwriter Michael Diliberti (previously credited as executive assistant to producer Scott Rudin) blunders his way past a great premise to lowest common denominator comedy. Nick (played by Jesse Eisenberg of The Social Network) is a pizza delivery boy who gets jumped by a pair of goons (Danny McBride, Nick Swardson), and strapped with a bomb and an ultimatum: rob a bank within ten hours or face the explosive consequences. Sounds exciting,...

Ruben Fleischer's upcoming film 30 Minutes or Less is one of the few comedies I've been looking forward to this summer. The story revolves around a pizza delivery man (Jesse Eisenberg) who is kidnapped by two criminals (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson). They strap a bomb to his chest and tell him that they will detonate it if he doesn't rob a bank within a few hours. Now, with the movie just days from hitting theatres, an interesting report has emerged. Could it be that 30 Minutes or Less is based on a true story... one that ended up costing a man his life? According to TMZ, a group of people in Pennsylvania are up in arms over the release of the film because their friend Brian Wells was killed under very similar circumstances. Did the filmmakers turn a real-life tragedy into a Hollywood comedy? Back in 2003, Wells was arrested while...

A few short years ago, Michael Sorrentino was working at a gym in Staten Island. Now, a nickname and some goofy times in a house down the shore later, he's eyeing a career like some of the biggest names in modern day Hollywood history.
And also, The Rock.
The man now known as The Situation has now filmed five seasons of "The Jersey Shore," that breakout hit about a bunch of self-described guidos partying hard, un-ironically coining catch phrases, making bad life decisions and somehow being just relatable enough to be lovable. He's capitalized well on his fame, launching workout DVDs, a self-help book and promoting a brand of protein vodka, amongst many other endorsements. Still, he's hungry for more.
The Situation has made no secret of his desire to branch out his entertainment career -- remember that ill-fated run on "Dancing With The Stars"? -- and earlier in the year,...

Here is a new restricted almost 2-minute long clip from 30 Minutes or Less. The action comedy film is directed by Ruben Fleischer and stars Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride, Aziz Ansari, Nick Swardson and Michael Pena.
Nick (Eisenberg) is a small town pizza delivery guy whose mundane life collides with the big plans of two wanna-be criminal masterminds (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson). The volatile duo kidnaps Nick and forces him to rob a bank. With mere hours to pull off the impossible task, Nick enlists the help of his ex-best friend, Chet (Aziz Ansari). As the clock ticks, the two must deal with the police, hired assassins, flamethrowers, and their own tumultuous relationship.
Written by newcomer Michael Diliberti, from a story he conceived with Matthew Sullivan, the film was produced by Ben Stiller and co-stars Michael Peña.
30 Minutes or Less opens August 12.

In 2003, high school dropout, Brian Douglas Wells, was working as a pizza delivery man at the Mama Mia Pizzeria in Erie, Pennsylvania when on August 28 he was sent on a delivery that ended at a TV transmission tower site. There he received instructions to rob a bank while wearing a bomb handcuffed to his neck.
He went to the bank and, instead of getting the $250,000 he asked for, walked out with only $8,702 and a Dum Dum lollipop he grabbed from the counter.
Upon completion of this task he began a scavenger hunt to gain the information necessary to remove the bomb from his neck before the kitchen timer expired and blew up. He made it to the first clue, but before he could go any further he was apprehended by the police. The bomb subsequently exploded on national television, killing him while he and the police waited for the bomb squad to show up.

After Google+, does the world need another online community? Storytree thinks it does and offers a site to help family members tell their favorite tales. "With Facebook and Google Circles, you get a lot of noise going on," a cofounder tells us. "We're focused on the meaningful content."
Storytree is out to solve a problem that's been bothering baby boomers and the elderly. They love to talk on the phone and visit with their younger family members, but they don't feel like they get to often enough. When they do connect, the stories they share aren't preserved-- and sending videos back and forth is cumbersome.
Inspired by these groups, their gripes, and StoryCorps, Matthew Sullivan and Zach Weiner recently launched the Storytree website, a digital online storytelling community for families.
Users create their own "storytrees" and are given the option to either record a story or ask a family member...

Tom Aldredge, an Emmy-winning actor seen in everything from Ryan's Hope to The Sopranos, died on Friday in Tampa, Fla. He was 83.
The cause was lymphoma, his manager, Matthew Sullivan, said.
Aldredge was nominated for five Tony Awards. He received a Drama Desk Award in 1972 for his portrayal of Ozzie, the father of a blinded Vietnam veteran in David Rabe’s dark comedy “Sticks and Bones.”
He won a Daytime Emmy in 1978 as Shakespeare in “Henry Winkler Meets William Shakespeare,” an episode of The CBS Festival Of Lively Arts For Young People.
His other television credits include recurring roles on The Sopranos (as Carmela’s father), Ryan's Hope (as Matt Pearse) and Damages (as Uncle Pete). He appeared last year in Boardwalk Empire as the father of the kingpin Nucky Thompson, played by Steve Buscemi.
