Plot: After not leaving the palace for quite some time, Chancellor Elena Vernham has grown increasingly paranoid and unstable when she turns to a volatile soldier, Herbert Zubak, as an unlikely confidant. As Zubak’s influence over the chancellor continues to grow, Elena’s attempts to expand her power eventually result in both the palace and the country fracturing around her.
Review: Politics, violence, sex, and humor are all elements that have made quality programming ranging from Game of Thrones to Veep. In The Regime, these elements are played for laughs as much as they are chills and provides a platform for Kate Winslet to deliver her most distinct role yet. As Elena Vernham, the Chancellor of a fictional European country, Winslet portrays an autocrat who thinks she has more power than she actually does. “Mare of Easttown” Primetime Emmy Award winner Kate Winslet is making her return to HBO — this time, as a power-hungry, insufferable political leader. Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs direct the series about an unraveling authoritarian ruler, with Oscar winner Winslet joined in the cast by Matthias Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant. Watch the latest trailer below.
The limited series, created and showrun by Will Tracy, premieres on HBO and Max March 3. Voting for the Emmys nominations begins June 13. That may feel like a long way off, even though the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards just happened (courtesy of the strikes) January 15. Place your easily made bets: Winslet will be part of the conversation once again this year.

The series has a lot going for it as it has an Oscar-winning actress at the center of the story, which hails from two of the minds behind one of the network's most beloved shows in recent memory, "Succession." But this is a very different sort of show not focused on the world of messy corporate politics, instead taking place inside a European palace and an authoritarian regime.

Kate Winslet is striking fear into the hearts of her not-so-loyal subjects in HBO‘s The Regime teaser trailer. From Will Tracy and Frank Rich, the complex minds behind Succession, comes a limited series about power, corruption, and subterfuge.
The Regime “tells the story of one year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel.”
“Since I became your Chancellor, we have grown considerably as a country. It is time to show America and the world precisely what we are worth,” Winslet’s Chancellor says in The Regime teaser trailer while addressing a crowd, asserting her authority. The vibes in the room quickly become hostile, eliciting fear and confusion about who’s in charge of the population’s wellbeing.
Joining the previously announced cast of Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton and Hugh Grant, the newly announced cast members include Danny Webb,...

The nearly two-minute teaser trailer for HBO’s The Regime reveals Oscar winner Kate Winslet is a Chancellor who turns to a soldier she plucks from obscurity to insulate her from all those who might question her authority. Matthias Schoenaerts stars as the soldier who takes his job of limiting access to the Chancellor way too seriously.
“The Regime tells the story of one year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel,” reads HBO’s synopsis. Unlike the single-sentence description, the teaser indicates the limited series is more of a comedy rather than a straight political drama.
Joining Winslet and Schoenaerts for the six-episode season are Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant.

“Mare of Easttown” Emmy winner Kate Winslet is back at HBO — this time as a European authoritarian ruler under heaps of pressure, and crumbling because of it.
HBO has released another trailer for its upcoming series “The Regime,” headed for the premium TV network on March 3, 2024. Oscar nominee Stephen Frears (“The Queen”) and Jessica Hobbs (an Emmy-winning director on “The Crown”) direct the series showrun by Will Tracy.
“The Regime” tells the story of one year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel. Along with Winslet, the cast includes Belgian “Rust and Bone” heartthrob Matthias Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne, surprise 2023 Best Actress Academy Award nominee Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and, a usual suspect for this sort of lofty Euro political fare, Hugh Grant. The trailer suggests layers of moneyed darkness a la “Succession” with a dash of Armando Iannucci “Veep” satire to match the drama.

HBO and Kate Winslet’s fruitful creative relationship will continue with The Regime, a limited series set to premiere in 2024. The premium cabler released a teaser for the series Wednesday at a Warner Bros. Discovery press event.
Formerly titled The Palace, the series from Succession writer and executive producer Will Tracy tells the story of a year inside the palace of a “modern European regime” as it starts to unravel. (That description is a slight tweak from an earlier logline that called the government in question “an authoritarian regime.”)
The teaser mostly focuses on a meeting between Winslet’s chancellor and a U.S. emissary played by Martha Plimpton. “We need you to demonstrate credibility to us — trustworthiness,” Plimpton’s character says.
“All we are doing is realizing our dream — our dream of a new Europe, without limits, without cruelty. There are times when one must choose the hardest road.

Kate Winslet is striving for more than just world peace as she sets her mind on crafting a “new Europe” as Madame Chancellor in HBO’s new political drama “The Regime.”
The official teaser, which was revealed during Warner Bros. Discovery’s unveiling of the Max streaming service Wednesday, showcases a tense confrontation between Winslet and an American diplomat (Martha Plimpton) who attempts to convince the chancellor the U.S. would like to help “enhance” Winslet’s authority in the region — a goal that was, evidently, not pressing enough that the President could attend the meeting.
“All we are doing is realizing our dream, our dream of a new Europe, without limits, without cruelty,” the chancellor says as she engages in, shall we say, less dignified actions to get her point across, including punching an unknown victim. “There are times when one must choose the hardest road; I have chosen...

There’s no release date yet for Kate Winslet’s next HBO project, the limited series event “The Palace,” created by Stephen Frears. But the network is tiding viewers over a first look at the upcoming drama.
Currently filming in Austria before the production relocates to the United Kingdom, “The Palace,” per HBO, “tells the story of one year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel.”
We may not know a lot about this new project– like the plot, the characters, or whether it’s inspired by anything in real life — but you can get a small sense of the general vibe of things in the image, which features a glowering, yet somehow stoic Winslet sitting in a very fancy room.

Following her Emmy-winning performance in "Mare of Easttown," Kate Winslet is returning for a brand new series on HBO. The "Titanic" and "Avatar: The Way of Water" actress is leading the cast of "The Palace," which depicts a year in an authoritarian regime as its foundation begins to crumble within the walls of a palace. Hugh Grant is part of the cast alongside Winslet -- he was last seen in Netflix's "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" in a cameo appearance, playing Benoit Blanc's live-in partner.
"The Palace" is rocking talent behind the scenes too, with the writers of "Succession," "The Menu," and "Bodies Bodies Bodies" working with the directors of "The Crown" and "The Queen."
While their characters, the plot, and filming details are being kept under wraps, here's everything we know -- as yet -- about HBO's "The Palace."

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gives out awards every single year, and like any other group, over time it’s clear that they have their favorites. Serious dramas reign at the Oscars, so much so that it’s a genuine shock when genre films get any serious attention outside of the technical categories. In particular, horror films like “The Silence of the Lambs,” “The Exorcist,” and “Get Out” win Oscars so very rarely that they’re easily written off as exceptions to the rule, instead of evidence that the horror genre is as rich and nuanced as any other and takes just as much award-worthy talent to craft.
Every year it seems as if there are a handful of horror movies and performances that receive the much-coveted Oscar buzz, only to emerge from the season empty-handed. If Academy voters can convince themselves not to nominate Toni Collette...

This year's Film Independent Spirit Awards – the 38th — announced their nominations. And it's shaping up to potentially be a very good ceremony for Everything Everywhere All At Once, TÁR, Women Talking and more.
The awards will be handed out on 4 March, though other details are in flux: broadcast for the last few years on us cable channel IFC, the ceremony's organisers are currently looking for a new TV home. Still, the celebration of indie movies will go ahead as planned.
And while the Indie Spirits don't tend to be a huge Oscar indicator, we'd expect at least a few of the nominees to also show up on the Academy Awards nominations list, to be announced on 24 January.

“Permanence was a new reckoning,” says Lila Neugebauer of directing Apple’s soulful film Causeway. The 37-year-old director had made a name for herself in New York in the past decade for helming acclaimed off-Broadway plays like Annie Baker’s The Antipodes, Sarah DeLappe’s The Wolves and Tracy Letts’ Mary Page Marlowe before making her Broadway debut with a 2018 production of Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery — which earned a Tony nomination for best revival of a play and won stage and screen veteran Elaine May her only Tony, for best actress in a play.
Neugebauer was comfortable in that medium — she says that theater “is invested in its own fragility and ephemerality. It’s expiring in front of you in real time.” But Hollywood was already calling: In 2018, she directed an episode of the Duplass brothers’ Room 104 for HBO, and early...

Although Causeway opens in an unassuming manner, from the get-go it tells us there’s much more than meets the eye. Initially, we see the back of Lynsey’s (Jennifer Lawrence) head as she waits for someone to pick her up. When her ride arrives, we learn something new about her, as we see an officer push her in a wheelchair. Soon she’s taken to a facility where people just want to help her feel better. Eventually, we learn, that Lynsey suffered a severe brain injury that forced her to come home from a tour in Afghanistan. The problem is, home no longer feels like that for her.
As Lynsey adjusts to this world she barely recognizes, in hopes she will soon be redeployed, she meets James (Brian Tyree Henry), a kind mechanic who recognizes a fellow spirit in need when she arrives in his workshop with a broken truck.

While Causeway is positioned as an intimate account of the troubled return home from Afghanistan of an injured U.S. Army engineer played by Jennifer Lawrence, this minor-key drama only really blossoms after its stealth transformation into a balanced two-hander about damaged people finding mutual solace. Brian Tyree Henry’s soulful work brings out richer shadings in Lawrence’s guarded stoicism and vice versa. Debuting director Lila Neugebauer surrounds herself with top-tier recruits from her New York stage background to flesh out this melancholy reflection on trauma and trust, set against the sleepy background of blue-collar New Orleans.
Neugebauer made a name for herself with incisive theater work in the past decade, notably her immersive staging of Sarah DeLappe’s The Wolves, about a high school girls’ soccer team; the Edward Albee diptych At Home at the Zoo; and Tracy Letts’ fragmented character study Mary Page Marlowe.
