Note: This story contains spoilers for “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3, Episode 7.
“Only Murders in the Building” has banked on impressive celebrity cameos in the past, and Tuesday’s latest episode kept that going with comedy powerhouses visiting the Arconia. After Charles (Steve Martin) quits Oliver’s (Martin Short) new musical, the latter decides to bring in Matthew Broderick as his prospective replacement.
“I’ve known Matthew for many years and obviously he’s a natural fit for this show. It’s just a pure comedy slayer coming in this way that only he can do,” showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap in an interview facilitated through his publicist and in accordance to WGA guidance. “I have to say the writers writing these wicked Ferris Bueller jokes and him rolling with that, it’s sweet to see them all jump up and step up and play along.”

“Ferris Bueller may take a day off, but Matthew Broderick does not,” the two-time Tony winner vows upon his arrival in Tuesday’s Only Murders in the Building.
The stage veteran makes a meal out of his brief stint at the Arconia, playing a heightened (read: extremely pompous) version of himself in Episode 7. “I had worked with Matthew years ago [on the 2003 movie Good Boy], and he was a natural fit for this show,” series co-creator John Hoffman tells TVLine. Plus, Broderick’s Producers pal was already a member of the Only Murders comedy troupe.

Exclusive: Even colleagues of Jordan Helman have noticed an uptick in his mood lately. The head of scripted content at Hulu Originals can’t seem to hide his optimism about the upcoming Emmy season and how, for once, the conversation won’t be laser focused on whether The Handmaid’s Tale takes home another trophy. With its robust slate of originals, Hulu could earn multiple nominations for series such as Only Murders in the Building, Dopesick, Pam and Tommy, The Girl from Plainville and Nine Perfect Strangers.
“I’d be lying if I said we didn’t feel immensely bullish and proud of where we are and what we’ve accomplished, particularly over the course of the last year,” Helman tells Deadline. “We have curated a steady slate of critical and commercial darlings that have not only performed on the platform, but in several cases have really found themselves at the center of the cultural conversation.

Freeform has canceled “Alone Together” after two seasons.
The series was a half-hour, single-camera comedy starring Esther Povitsky and Benji Aflalo. The pair play platonic best friends who want nothing more than to be accepted by the vain and status-obsessed culture. Despite their sometimes contentious relationship, when push comes to shove, they’ve got each other’s back and they have nobody else to hang out with.
Povitsky and Aflalo co-created the series with Eben Russell, serving as writers and executive producers as well. Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer, Billy Rosenberg and Hunter Covington also served as executive producers. Daniel Gray Longino directed the pilot.
The show averaged a 0.05 rating in adults 18-49 in its second season, as well as 127,000 viewers per episode, down around 50% in both measures from Season 1. The second season aired back in August.

Shawn Levy, Billy Rosenberg and Max Greenfield are producing for 21 Laps, whose Dan Cohen will oversee the project for the company. New Line executives Sam Brown and Dave Neustadter will oversee on behalf of the studio. Van Robichaux and Evan Susser wrote the script, which follows a mild-mannered English teacher who is challenged to a fist fight by a much tougher colleague who suspects the English teacher is trying to get him fired.

Exclusive: Fox Searchlight has picked up a high-concept feature comedy pitch that will be written and directed Joe Swanberg, who is coming off Drinking Buddies. Shawn Levy will produce through his 21 Laps banner with Alicia Van Couvering and 21 Laps executives Billy Rosenberg and Dan Cohen. They are keeping the logline under wraps, but it’s described to me as a thematic continuation of Swanberg’s films that tackle the complex romantic relationships between people struggling with commitment. Levy just produced The Spectacular Now, the James Ponsoldt-directed arthouse hit that premiered last Sundance. CAA reps Swanberg.

Shawn Levy, whose last movie was the better-than-expected “Real Steel”, has teamed up with Paramount to snatch up the spec script “Monster Problems” by screenwriter Brian Duffield. Levy will produce, though it’s unlikely he’ll also direct, since he’s already got a couple of films schedule, including “The Internship” with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. “Monster Problems” is described as “a post-apocalyptic road movie in the vein of Mad Max and Zombieland with a John Hughes-esque love story at its center.” Or they could have just cut to the chase and call it “Zombieland with monsters”. Billy Rosenberg and Dan Cohen will produce for Levy’s 21 Laps shingle. The script is from Duffield, who also recently sold “Jane Got a Gun”, with Natalie Portman scheduled to produce and star...

Deborah Ann Woll ("True Blood"), Hailee Steinfeld ("True Grit") and Dave Franco ("Fright Night") have been offered the three lead roles in the period comedy "Rosaline" at Fox 2000 says Variety.
Based on Rebecca Serle's debut novel "When You Were Mine," the story is a contemporary high school-set take on "Romeo and Juliet" which shifts the perspective to tell the story from the vantage point of Rosaline (Woll), Romeo's jilted ex-girlfriend. Franco and Steinfeld would play the doomed lovers.
None of the three are signed yet as the film has not been given a green light as yet. Michael Sucsy ("Grey Gardens") directs from a script by Scott Neustader and Michael H. Weber ("(500) Days of Summer").
Steinfeld has already been linked to play Juliet opposite Douglas Booth as Romeo in a rival project, Carlo Carlei's more traditional take on the Shakespeare classic adapted by scribe Julian Fellowes. Shawn Levy and Billy Rosenberg are producing.

Exclusive: The spec script went out last night and the mid against high 6-figure deal just closed. Century Fox acquired The Three Misfortunes of Geppetto for Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps. He’s attached to direct the screenplay by Michael Vukadinovich. 21 Laps execs Dan Cohen and Billy Rosenberg brought in the script that’s a prequel to the story of Pinocchio. Geppetto endures a life of misfortune, war and adventure all to be with Julia Moon, his true love. The sweep is reminiscent of Big Fish or The Princess Bride and it creates a fresh way into the Pinocchio story at a time when revisionist fairy tales are dominating the movie landscape. Warner Bros last year set up a live action Pinocchio film that has the interest of Tim Burton. It gives Fox another project with Levy, who most recently directed Real Steel, which opened as last weekend’s top grossing film for DreamWorks.

Writer-directors Jay and Mark Duplass have sold their pitch "Table 19" to Fox Searchlight.
Shawn Levy and Tom McNulty of 21 Laps will produce the ensemble comedy-drama. 21 Laps exec Billy Rosenberg will oversee development.
Based on McNulty's fish-out-of-water stories from attending a good friend's wedding in England, the dramedy describes the experience of those wedding guests quarantined at the dreaded "singles table." Told from the points of view of the strangers randomly thrown together, the story explores what marriage means to those on the sidelines.
"We had tried to crack this idea with several writers over the years, and we were always huge fans of Mark and Jay Duplass," McNulty said. "When they said they wanted it to be their next film to write and direct, we were thrilled."
The Duplass brothers are repped by Wma.
