The best days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are behind it, and I don't just mean the fall from its decade-long box office throne. Any media that reaches pop culture omnipresence like Marvel movies did inspires a counterwave of backlash -- it's just the way the discourse flows. And with the MCU, there's a lot to critique.
There's shoddy filmmaking, the centering of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige as the creative glue, the cheap self-deprecating humor that's spread its roots across Hollywood (e.g. Netflix's live-action "Cowboy Bebop"), and the aimless, complicated-yet-simplistic narrative that exists in service of nothing but its further propagation. That last issue is inherited from Marvel Comics, yet if you dive into current Marvel comics, you'll find one all-too-aware series that is weaving MCU critique into its (meta)text. That series is Al Ewing's "Immortal Thor".

It was only a matter of time. When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox a few years back, the comic book rights to Fox franchises like Predator and Alien ended up in the hands of Marvel Comics – and given the fact that Predators and Aliens battled DC Comics heroes like Batman, Superman, and Green Lantern in the days when Dark Horse Comics held the comic book rights, it seemed obvious that Marvel would eventually get to making them face off with their heroes as well. Last year, we got Predator vs. Wolverine, and now Entertainment Weekly has revealed that a limited series called Aliens vs. Avengers is set to start reaching store shelves on July 24th!
Set “a little into the future,” Aliens vs. Avengers has the following synopsis: It’s all led to this: Xenomorphs reach Earth! The perfect organism meets a planet of superhumans. Who will be first to fall?...

Well, it’s finally happening. It was only a matter of time before Disney-owned Marvel characters and the Disney-owned Xenomorphs came together for an epic mashup, and Entertainment Weekly has announced this morning that Aliens vs. Avengers is coming soon!
The upcoming series from Marvel Comics comes courtesy of writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Esad Ribic, and Entertainment Weekly has shared cover art and details today.
Here’s the official synopsis from Marvel Comics…
“It’s all led to this: Xenomorphs reach Earth! The perfect organism meets a planet of superhumans. Who will be first to fall?”
“I’ve never worked on a licensed or ‘non-superhero’ property the entire time I’ve been at Marvel, so when all of this came together almost two years ago, I kind of jumped at the opportunity,” Jonathan Hickman tells EW. “I love the Aliens universe and the mythology, and obviously just how atmospherically...

2021’s Eternals introduced audiences to a new team of heroes in the MCU. The film boasted a fantastic ensemble cast led by Gemma Chan and Richard Madden. Being helmed by an Oscar-winning director, Chloe Zhao, one expected that the film was going to be one of the best in the franchise, especially with Kevin Feige doubling down on his belief in its quality.
2021’s Eternals was not appreciated by MCU fans
The film received mixed reviews from fans and underperformed at the box office. That has been a bit of a constant for the MCU for the past 2 years. With Jonathan Majors now out as Kang, a sequel to Eternals can introduce a powerful villain who is as threatening as Thanos and can be the MCU’s replacement for Kang.

The MCU has a villain problem. People said same thing the first few years of the franchise’s existence, but those complaints fell away as Loki, Killmonger, and especially Thanos entered the fray. Now that Jonathan Majors’s off-screen problems have presumably brought an end to Kang the Conquerer in the MCU, the question has come up again.
Josh Brolin recently teased Marvel Studios might bring back Thanos in some way, although he stopped short of confirming it would be in the role of big bad once again. That would be one way to re-energize the MCU with a popular villain. That said, ever since Disney purchased 20th Century Fox for the X-Men rights, fans have waited for the coming of Marvel’s greatest villain of all, Dr. Victor von Doom.

Even as superhero movies took Hollywood and the box office by storm in the 2010s, it has proven difficult for fans of those movies to get into the source material comics. If you're a Spider-Man fan eagerly waiting for "Beyond The Spider-Verse," though, pay attention to a new comic swinging its way to stores in January 2024. It will be the easiest jumping-on point for you in a long while.
That comic is "Ultimate Spider-Man," first announced via Marvel's Twitter account on September 20, 2023. It will be an ongoing series written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Marco Checchetto. The talent involved was already enough to pique comic fans' interest (and we'll explain why it should rouse yours' too soon). More details about "Ultimate Spider-Man were confirmed at New York Comic-Con this past weekend — at a panel attended by comics outlet Aipt, Hickman said the comic will be about a middle-aged Spider-Man,...

It's hard out there to be a bad guy. Your legitimate grievances with society go ignored until you blow up a planet over it, and then suddenly everyone's paying attention to the wrong thing. Or your legitimate grievances receive attention but go unresolved, and when you genetically engineer people to turn into dinosaurs, suddenly you're a meme. Even worse, should you get somewhere with your goals, nobody is happy with you and the heroes band up to kill you and undo your hard work. Can't we ever just talk things out? Over a lava lake with magma sharks in it?
Or, perhaps you realize you were going about things the wrong way, and you make an effort to turn the situation around. You experience regret, grow as a person, and then, well, redemption usually equals death in stories like that. As nearly all of us experienced, 2022 was particularly tough on...

"Thor: Love and Thunder" is a film heavily inspired by the Marvel Comics, specifically Jason Aaron's famous run on the God of Thunder. Featuring everything from Jane Foster, aka the Mighty Thor, to the two goats Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, "Love and Thunder" feels heavily influenced by Aaron's take on the character and the world of Asgard.
Perhaps the most considerable influence Aaron's Thor comic had on the film, aside from the introduction of Jane Foster's Mighty Thor, is the villain at the center of "Love and Thunder." Gorr the God Butcher, portrayed by Christian Bale in the film, is an original character created by writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribić as the first major villain for their run.
Gorr's monstrous appearance and powerset soon made him one of the most popular Thor villains, so there was plenty of excitement when Christian Bale was cast as the villain. Bale's...

It’s no secret how much Joe and Anthony Russo would like to make Avengers: Secret Wars.
However, with today’s announcement at Comic-Con that that Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2025 will end with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, the comic studio’s Marvel Studios President said that the brothers aren’t attached to take the helm of either movie. The duo are responsible for delivering two of the top five grossing movies of all-time with 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame which combined grossed $4.8 billion.
“They’re not connected to it,” Feige told us about the Russos and the Phase Avengers films. “They’ve been very direct about that. We love them, they love us. We want to find something to do together, it’s not this.”
Outside of Feige, we’ve heard there’s been no talks between the Russos and Marvel on the new Avengers films.

How the hell has Kieron Gillen never written a summer event comic before?
Gillen is the writer behind Eisner- and Hugo-nominated comics such as perennial Den of Geek favorites Once & Future and The Wicked + The Divine. But even before that, he was part of that mid-aughts wave of Image writers who took over Marvel’s flagship books. Gillen wrote a couple of excellent Utopia-era X-Men books (Generation Hope and Uncanny X-Men), as well as a beloved run with Kid Loki that helped inspire one Disney+ show and a relaunch of Young Avengers with Jamie McKelvie that is likely going to have an impact on the MCU further down the line. And yet, somehow, his first blockbuster comics crossover is out in 2022.

"Thor: Love and Thunder" hits theaters soon, and we're getting a new MCU villain in Christian Bale. He plays Gorr the God Butcher, a character who, in the comics, loses his wife and child. He prayed to the gods of his people to save them, but they didn't. After, he vows to destroy the gods, and gains the Necrosword to do it with. That's an oversimplification, but for our purposes, it explains who Gorr is.
Gorr first appeared in Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic's run with "Thor: God of Thunder" #1 in 2013. He has quite the look in the comics, all black and white, as the best...

It finally happened!
The first Thor: Love and Thunder trailer was all good vibes, man. Bright colors. Taika Waititi’s trademark sense of humor. The promise of the continuing redemption arc of the God of Thunder. An amazing instrumental version of Guns n’ Roses “Sweet Child O’ Mine.”
And the second Thor: Love and Thunder trailer? Well, it has bright colors, that director’s humor (and voice), the aforementioned redemption arc, that killer GnR tune again. But then we get the vibe shift at exactly one minute in, with the long-awaited introduction (and official first look at) Christian Bale as the film’s big villain, Gorr the God-Butcher.
Before we go any further into what that means, you should have a look for yourself:
While there isn’t Quite as much to unpack here as we did in the other Thor: Love and Thunder trailer, there are still a few things that are worth discussing.

This post contains spoilers for Moon Knight.
Gods have always been part of the MCU. Wakandans thank Bast and Sekhmet, Captain America assured Black Widow that “There’s only one God,” and the Celestials shown in Guardians of the Galaxy and Eternals create and destroy worlds. But without question, the series most concerned with deities has been Thor. Since the first film, Thor has dealt with not only the titular god of thunder, but also the All-Father Odin, the trickster god Loki, and the goddess of death Hela. The only series to rival Thor in god content has been Moon Knight and its Ennead, the collection of Egyptian gods, including Khonshu, Ammit, and Taweret.
Fans of both Moon Knight and Thor may have been surprised that the two pantheons never mentioned one another. But that wasn’t originally the plan. Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater told The Direct that he...

After a break from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Natalie Portman is back and more powerful than ever in the first teaser for “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
The fourth film in the “Thor” series is directed by Taika Waititi, who helmed the well-received “Thor: Ragnarok.” The movie follows on the heels of “Avengers: Endgame,” which ended with Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth), adrift after the fall of his kingdom Asgard, leaving Earth with the Guardians of the Galaxy. The teaser begins with him as a member of the group, with Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel set to reprise their roles. Previous MCU stars Tessa Thompson and Waititi himself — as the rock gladiator Korg — will also return for the film, but the biggest moment of the teaser comes in the final seconds, when Portman’s Jane Foster is revealed as the new Mighty Thor.

This article contains Eternals spoilers.
It’s not hard, when a Captain America or an Iron Man movie hits, for Marvel to have a comic on shelves that new fans can be pointed toward as an accessible way to get to know the characters. The same can’t be said for The Eternals. In a lot of ways, Jack Kirby’s most bizarre creations – god-like beings, created by the all-powerful Celestials to do battle with the deformed, wild Deviants – have endured despite their relative scarcity. The sum total of what can be reasonably called Eternals stories only runs to about 50 issues. So the task of centering them ahead of their big movie debut in November is both a blessing and a curse, even with an all-star cast and an Oscar-winning director at the helm.
Enter Kieron Gillen.
Gillen is a Marvel veteran and no stranger to the company’s cultural juggernaut side.

Eyebrows shot clear skywards when Marvel Studios first announced that it had snagged former Batman Christian Bale to play its main Thor: Love and Thunder villain Gorr the God Butcher, but despite seeing a bald Bale hanging around on the film’s main shoot in Australia, we never got to witness the actor in full costume in any of the set photos that found their way online.
That situation definitely changed this week! Principle photography may have wrapped on Thor: Love and Thunder back in June, but it’s been reported that some additional photography and reshoots are now underway stateside – and they’ve delivered a set of images that finally reveal Bale’s villain in all his glory.
Well, most of his glory. No doubt there will be some visual effects added later to make him even more terrifying, but these pics do give us a really good idea...

The first trailer for Marvel’s Eternals is here, and it’s full of quick looks at all of our…favorite characters is probably a stretch, but there sure are a bunch of Eternals in there. Ajak narrates, Ikaris and Sersi get stuff to do, we even get Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman/Black Knight looking at the sky and knowing nothing. But there’s one thing missing that one might expect from the first introduction to an otherwise obscure set of characters. The most famous Eternal is missing.
Where’s Thanos?
Yes, the very same Thanos who snapped half the universe into oblivion in Infinity Gauntlet (and more memorably on screen in Avengers: Infinity War) is actually a member of the Eternal race. And a member of their opposing force, the Deviants. It’s very complicated.
Spoilers for Kieron Gillen and Esad Ribic’s The Eternals follow.

There’s plenty to be excited about when it comes to Thor: Love and Thunder. Whether it’s the return of Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi to the chair, the return of Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, or the homecoming for Natalie Portman, this time with Jane Foster becoming Thor, it sounds like Thor 4 is just absolutely packed with MCU goodness.
But there’s one bit of casting that has had fans excited from the moment it was first announced: Christian Bale is finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And Bale is bringing his rather intense presence to an appropriately intense role, that of Gorr, the God-Butcher.
And yes, folks, Gorr is every bit as intense as that impossibly metal name makes him sound. Imagine an alien who lost everything, watching his family die and vowing revenge. But Gorr’s loved ones died of things like starvation and natural disasters, meaning...

Marvel Comics' new "Eternals" series, now available, is written by Kieron Gillan and illustrated by Esad Ribic, in support of Marvel Studios' upcoming live-action "Eternals" feature starring Angelia Jolie, releasing November 5, 2021:
"...for millions of years, one hundred 'Eternals' have roamed the Earth, as the secret protectors of humanity. Without them, we'd be smears between the teeth of the demon-like 'Deviants'.
"Their war has waged for all time, echoing in our myths and nightmares. But today, Eternals face something new: change. Can they — or anyone — survive their discovery?..."
"'Eternal' doesn’t mean immortal," said Gillon. "'Eternal' means unchanging. That's a different thing. There can be something comforting about the Eternals, but there's also something fundamentally disturbing to it.
"The old superhero cliché of 'The Never-ending battle against crime' is one of those lines which, if you take it out of context for a second and think about it, seems absolutely 'Sisyphean' in its hopelessness.

It turns out we were completely wrong. When news first broke about Christian Bale in talks to join Thor: Love and Thunder, we speculated wildly about who he might play. We found out the answer from Disney’s investor call Thursday: Bale will be playing the flick’s main villain, Gorr the God Butcher.
This is a bit of a surprise choice, as you can see from our very well thought out speculation being completely wrong. Gorr the God Butcher is a relatively new addition to the Asgardian mythos in the Marvel Universe, having been created by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic in the pages of 2012’s Thor: God of Thunder. But if you’re looking for big, thematic foils…he’s still a surprise choice, to be honest.
Gorr was once a poor, downtrodden alien living on a desolate world. He prayed constantly to improve his station in life.

Kieron Gillen is coming back to Marvel, and his new project is a really big deal.
The Eternals are simultaneously Jack Kirby’s weirdest and most straightforward creations, and with them coming to the big screen in February, bringing them back to the comics makes a ton of sense. Pairing Gillen with Esad Ribic shows Marvel is not messing around with it.
“I said if I was ever to do a book again at Marvel, it would have to be something I’ve never done before. This is exactly that. This is me teaming up with literally my favourite artist of the epic, taking one of those lightning-storm Kirby visions and re-making it to be as new as the day it was forged,” Gillen said in a statement. “While Esad makes whole worlds on the page, I’m applying all the skills I’ve developed when I was away. It’s a lot.

Joe and Anthony Russo somehow managed to pull off the biggest movie crossover of all time when they wrapped up 22 Marvel movies with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Loosely based on the Infinity saga from the comics, they represent not just a culmination of a decade’s worth of Marvel stories on screen, but also the most sweeping, epic comic story ever brought to the big screen (DC’s Crisis on Infinite Earths was adapted for television).
And then the Russos walked away. But in an interview with Brobible, they talked about the one comics adaptation that could bring them back to the McU: Secret Wars.
“I read that when I was 10 or 11, and it was the scale of getting all of the heroes together. It was one of the first major books to do that — that was really event-storytelling to me at its finest,” Joe Russo said.

I very nearly started this preview of Action Comics #1008 with “Who would have guessed Steve Epting would be an Amazing Superman artist?” I realized about halfway through typing it, though, that this is an incredibly stupid thing to write. Literally everyone would have guessed that. Even me, once I thought about it for the briefest of seconds.
The initial surprise was seeded by the work I know him best from. His time on Captain America with Ed Brubaker and New Avengers with Jonathan Hickman is decidedly not-Supermannish. Cap was all about putting Steve Rogers in a hole so deep he could barely climb back out of, breaking him with his own past. New Avengers was the opposite and simultaneously darker by an almost ridiculous amount - ripping down the entire multiverse, while also tearing down the moral centers of the characters who mostly occupied the moral center of the Marvel Universe.

One thing that’s ticked off True Believers in recent years was that of the Fantastic Four being given the short end of the stick by the House of Ideas. Having been dubbed their “First Family” for good reason, pretty much the entire Marvel Universe owes their existence to that quartet of heroes.
Of course, much of this had to do with the Fantastic Four’s cinematic rights residing over at Fox, thus forcing Marvel to cut off its own nose to spite its face. In fact, even the X-Men were on the outs for a time, but some justification can be made for cancelling Fantastic Four books because they weren’t selling as well – and there was also word on the street that the publisher wanted to distance itself from the 2015 box office flop.
But now that everyone’s had almost three years to rid that taste from their mouth,...

Something that I’ve always dug seeing the big publishers do is whenever they go beyond the normal means of promoting new books via print ads, online banners and other stuff of that sort. Really, if Marvel wants to grab the attention of True Believers, they’re going to do it in style by releasing a trailer for a comic.
To some, they may wonder what’s the point, but without these funny books, you wouldn’t have your movies, animated series or beach towels. And when it comes to an iconic stable such as the Fantastic Four, well, Marvel’s First Family are more than deserving of all the fanfare accompanying their highly anticipated return.
Helping with marking this momentous occasion is the aforementioned trailer, which you can check out up above. In it, we’re given a brief tour of the group’s illustrious history, as images supplied...

Vs is a good example of how great art and a good premise can only take you so far. Opening up we see these striking images of the vastness of space immediately causing the stage of this story to feel large. As the story progresses it becomes more and more apparent that vastness is missing many key components causing this first issue to feel hollow and wasted.
The story centers on Lieutenant Flynn who leads a squadron in a futurist version of the Gladiator arena. It is like what if all those Call of Duty multiplayer match-ups became real. Similar to the days of the Gladiator these men and women battle to the death for the apparent amusement of others. Victors are treated as celebrities of the highest order. What is unclear though is the true purpose behind...
