James Van Der Beek and his wife, Kimberly Brook, welcomed a baby girl Saturday.
"Had the blessing of becoming a father over the weekend... Couldn't come close to describing this bliss even if I had 140 million characters," the "Dawson's Creek" star wrote on Twitter Tuesday morning.
"Olivia Van Der Beek, born 9/25. I apologize in advance for any obnoxiously precious new-dad tweets that may follow. I'm under her spell…" added Van Der Beek, who wed Brook over the summer.
He's already planning father-daughter bonding activities.
"If I watch football w/ my daughter now, she'll like the sounds of the NFL & want to watch it w/ me when she's older #momdoesntthinkso" Van Der Beek joked on Twitter.
Van Der Beek last appeared as Dr. Joe Briggs on NBC's "Mercy."...

Craig here with another Take Three
Today: Peter Lorre
Take One: When you're strange...
Lorre did Stranger on the Third Floor (1940) because he owed Rko Pictures two days work; just enough time to fit in a slippery six-minute cameo role, though top-billed, as the titular stranger. Boris Ingster's B-movie has been long thought to have kick-started Film Noir - though some point to The Maltese Falcon, also starring Lorre - and the long, angular and accusing shadows from M have certainly followed Lorre to '40s New York; he's hiding in them again, under stoops, around stairwells, sporting a foppish white scarf and fixing passers-by with his signature beady glare (think Steve Buscemi playing Quentin Crisp). Lorre's cypher-like stranger could just be the real killer responsible for several throat-slit murders witnessed by reporter Mike Ward (John McGuire), the blame for which has landed at cabbie Joe Briggs' (Elisha Cook Jr.) feet.

Look up on that marquee. Whose name do you see? László Löwenstein! Then you shake your head and wonder, “Who is László Löwenstein?” To film audiences around the world and until the day he died, he was known as Peter Lorre, one of my favorite actors and sadly not enough people know him apart from the Looney Tunes caricature that, while pretty brilliant, doesn’t show a fraction of his acting ability.
Today is a special day because his birthday is June 26th and he would be a ripe 106 years old. So here at the Criterion Cast, I would like to share with you my top 10 Peter Lorre films that I just absolutely adore. This isn’t a definitive list, so if you have any suggestions yourself, please list them down below in the comments section.
10. The Raven (1963)/ The Comedy of Terrors (1964)
Are these great films? Not at all, to be honest.

James Van Der Beek has admitted that acting burnt him out. The former Dawson's Creek star, who recently signed up to appear in medical drama Mercy, explained that he had needed a break from the profession. "I think I got really burnt out and just did not enjoy acting for a while," he told E! Online. "I think time was the turning point... just time to kind of recharge and grow up a little bit. Now I'm having great fun." Van Der Beek added that he is intrigued by his Mercy character Dr Joe Briggs. He said: "He might be a womaniser, he has dark (more)...

James Van Der Beek is joining the cast of Mercy, starting on February 3. NBC has released several sneak peeks for the episode, which you can view below.
Mercy Hospital And Its Staff Meet The New Head Of The Icu, Dr. Joe Briggs (Guest Star James Van Der Beek)
Mercy staffers are jolted by the arrival of Dr. Joe Briggs (James Van Der Beek, "Dawson's Creek"), the arrogant new head of Icu with whom Veronica (Taylor Schilling) promptly locks horns. Meanwhile, Veronica and Dr. Sands (James Tupper) must set aside their own relationship as they try to save a boy found nearly frozen in the woods.
Following the death of one of her patients, Chloe (Michelle Trachtenberg) helps the grieving widower take the difficult step of leaving the hospital and Sonia (Jaime Lee Kirchner) continues her turn as private nurse to an upper-crust family. James LeGros, Diego Klattenhoff and Guillermo Diaz also star.

For years former "Dawson's Creek" star James Van Der Beek has been carrying around the reputation for taking himself a little too seriously. But now the 32-year-old actor is learning to let go.
"A couple of years ago, I started saying 'yes' to things I was saying 'no' to, and I started having a lot of fun," Van Der Beek says. "I stopped caring 'should I or shouldn't I?'
"This thing on 'One Tree Hill' sounds like a lot of fun and games and I had a great time. I started to fall in love with being on a set again."
This goes a long way in explaining his more unexpected roles on "One Tree Hill," "Ugly Betty" and "How I Met Your Mother."
Starting Wednesday, Feb. 2, Van Der Beek brings this new "Why not?" attitude to NBC's "Mercy" when he joins the cast for a multi-episode arc as Dr.

Next week, James Van Der Beek joins the cast of NBC's Mercy. He plays Dr. Joe Briggs, the arrogant new chief of the Icu, who immediately clashes with Nurse Veronica Callahan (Taylor Schilling). Watch the promo below and tell me if Mercy (clap! clap!) just got interesting. I could (possibly) enjoy Van Der Beek as a badass. I'm getting that "slap him, then kiss him" vibe that I normally reserve for Ian Somerhalder. Though Somerhalder carries that charisma with him offscreen. Van Der Beek, not so much.... After the jump, a clip of him defending himself against recent comments made by Rob Lowe.
