Tod Browning (1880-1962) was a pioneering director who helped establish the horror film genre. Born in Louisville Kentucky, Browning ran away to join the circus at an early age which influenced his later career in Hollywood and echoes of those years can be found in many of his films. Though best known as the director of the first sound version of Dracula starring Bela Lugosi in 1931, Browning made his mark on cinema in the silent era with his extraordinary 10-film collaboration with actor Lon Chaney, the ‘Man of a Thousand Faces’. Despite the success of Dracula, and the boost it gave his career, Browning’s chief interest continued to lie not in films dealing with the supernatural but in films that dealt with the grotesque and strange, earning him the reputation as “the Edgar Allan Poe of the cinema”. David Koechner has become a ubiquitous presence in comedy films over the last ten years, from "Anchorman" and "The 40 Year-Old Virgin" to "Waiting ..." and "Get Smart." He recently played a detective in the offbeat ensemble comedy "Small Apartments," with Matt Lucas and Billy Crystal.
He currently stars in "Full On Koechner," a YouTube-based web series in partnership with Official Comedy and found at Koechner's YouTube channel.
Koechner recently spoke with us about tighty-whities, Malcolm Gladwell and becoming Champ Kind again.
"Small Apartments" is probably the darkest movie I've ever laughed out loud at in my life. What were your emotions while reading the script for the first time?
[laughs] Yeah, there's some oddity to it, which I like. Did you ever see a movie called "Man Bites Dog"?
I've heard of "Man Bites Dog," but have never seen it.
That's the darkest, funniest film I've ever seen. But probably after that,...

In this guest post Darren Woolley criticises self-titled social media experts without any demonstrable expertise and offers a few ways to catch them out.
In the past 12 months it seems that social media experts have been coming out of the woodwork and turning up at industry conferences espousing their ideas on social media strategies.
In fact, just last week in Sydney there was an industry forum on social media and of the ten speakers, two openly admitted to not really understanding social media as they did not use it, and six more had no Twitter account that I could find, or any obvious sign of social media authority to speak on the subject.
Earlier this year, I went to an industry function where the keynote speaker was a brand marketer who had recently set up as a consultant on building brands using social media. A quick check showed they had...

Where would a horror movie be without a classic death scene – or two? We’ve had some great ones over the years: Janet Leigh’s shower to end all showers in Psycho (1960); the ill fated nude swim in Jaws (1975); David Warner’s famous decapitation in The Omen (1976); John Hurt’s serious indigestion problem in Alien (1979); and the exploding head in Scanners (1980). And let’s not forget the gruesome ends that befell pre-stardom Kevin Bacon and Johnny Depp.
Hang on a minute! I’ve just mentioned all the classic ones! Well let’s face it, so much has been written and discussed about those famous demises, they’ve been pretty much done to death (sorry!). Therefore, the following ten are horror-related deaths that deserve some kind of classic status, a couple of which are notable for their surreal and ambiguous nature. But beware...since most of the best death scenes are...

On Monday night (July 26), Tampa Bay Devil Rays pitcher Matt Garza threw a no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers. That makes five no-hitters this season, a year that the sports media has dubbed "The Season of the Pitcher." Between the no-hitters, the debut of phenom Stephen Strasburg and the emergence of stars like lights-out wonder Ubaldo Jimenez and reborn knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, it has been an incredible few months for anybody who is a fan of the science of pitching. There have even been two perfect games this year (care of the Oakland Athletics' Dallas Braden and the Philadelphia Phillies' Roy Halladay), which is an incredible statistic.
There have only been 18 perfect games — wherein a pitcher does not allow any hits or walks — in the history of baseball, so each one continues to have a certain magic about it many years later. There was Don Larsen's famous perfect game during the 1956 World Series,...
