"Cars 2, directed (like several great Pixar films of the last two decades) by John Lasseter, finds itself in the unlucky position of the not-so-bright kid in a brilliant family," finds Slate's Dana Stevens. "No matter if his performance in school is comfortably average; he'll always be seen as a disappointment compared to his stellar siblings. There's nothing really objectionable about Cars 2, although parents of young children should be warned that a few evil vehicles meet violently inauspicious ends. It's sweet-spirited, visually delightful (if aurally cacophonous), and it will make for a pleasant enough family afternoon at the movies. But we've come to expect so much more than mere pleasantness from Pixar that Cars 2 feels almost like a betrayal."

Suddenly, it's summer: trailers for X-Men: First Class, Transformers 3 and the final, no-really-this-is-it installment of the Harry Potter franchise have popped online in rapid succession, Fast Five "is racing towards a $79 million to $81 million weekend opening," and the first round of summer movie previews is out.
"As it celebrates its tenth anniversary with its fifth series entry, Universal's Fast and the Furious franchise should rightly be regarded as one of the more reliable popcorn pleasures of recent years," writes Scott Foundas at the Fslc's Blog, "and also, like the Harry Potter films, that rare long-legged franchise that has actually gotten better with age. A revved-up, nitrous-boosted makeover of the hot-rod movies of the 50s and 60s, the first Fast and the Furious (borrowing the title, though not the plot, from a 1955 Roger Corman quickie) followed undercover Los Angeles cop Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) as he infiltrated an...

"A onetime yakuza turned jailbird turned filmmaking enfant terrible, the now-75-year-old Japanese director Kōji Wakamatsu has long been loved by cinema cultists for an outrageous string of 1960s provocations made under the guise of the pinku eiga — or 'pink' film." Steve Dollar at GreenCine Daily: "These typically low-budget sex romps could be as insane, surreal, or mind-bending as possible, as long as they included a minimum amount of nudity and softcore humping. Wakamatsu, seizing the opportunity, used the form to pursue the extremes, reveling in obsessive sex and violence as a leftist critique of Japanese society. Beyond the outrage and sleaze of The Embryo Hunts in Secret [1966]; Go, Go Second-Time Virgin [1969]; and Ecstasy of the Angels [1972], was a form of perverse shock treatment. Wakamatsu took a break from the camera in 1977, and didn't return for 27 years. But he still wants to mess with your head."

Ramona and Beezus is flying under the radar, opening in the wake of Inception and up against Salt this week. Does it deliver to the target tween audience?
"...a featherweight G-rated comedy of no consequence, except undoubtedly to kids about Ramona's age."
— Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"...easily the most wholesome movie of the summer, but its squeaky-cleanness never comes at the expense of honesty or character."
— Josh Bell, filmcritic.com
"...a sweetened synthesis of stories from the great Beverly Cleary's classic series of kids' books..."
— Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
"...a sprightly, generic kidpic..."
— Justin Chang, Variety
"...less Disney than Hallmark Channel, a loose adaptation of Beverly Cleary's first novel in her beloved kid-lit series that's wholesome to the point of being dull."
— Nick Schager, Village Voice

Those of you who read Pajiba After Dark regularly know that I'm open to suggestions. That's why you now get late night listings and why the time slots are now in bold type. Usually, I also keep an eye on the comments to see if anyone asks about a specific show. There's a lot of crap on TV that no one watches, so I tend to only list shows I think you guys would be interested in but I'm open to suggestions. Respectfully made suggestions. Last week someone pointed out a show I hadn't mentioned, except instead of saying something like "Hey [X Show] is on tonight too, did you miss it?" or "I'm going to be watching [X Show] tonight, you guys should check it out!" they were snitty and mean about it. Therefore, I will not be mentioning that show. Let this be a lesson to the rest of you. Here's Wednesday night's TV:
