First, let’s revisit the long and winding path that Bob Marley projects have taken, since the Warner Bros announcement in 1999…
One… two… three… go!
Alright, so there was the 1999 Warner Bros. project which was to be based on Timothy White’s 1998 novel Catch A fire: The Life of Bob Marley; the film was to star Bob Marley’s son Rohan (as Bob) and Lauryn Hill (as Rita Marley), but nothing ever materialized.
7 years later, in 2006, Jamie Foxx (of all people) was said to be starring as Bob Marley in a biopic that was to be directed by French-Algerian filmmaker Rachid Bouchareb, which was reportedly conceived by Rita Marley. As an aside, long-time readers of this blog will recognize Rachid Bouchareb’s name, as it’s come up a number of times – notably, his latest film, Hors La Loi (Outside The Law) caused quite a stir at last year’s Cannes Film Festival; also,...

The lives of musical icons often provide excellent readymade material for compelling cinema. In recent years we have seen the stories of John Lennon, Ray Charles and Johnny Cash translated to the screen to critical acclaim and relative commercial success. Now, along with Scorsese’s Sinatra biopic, we have a film about Bob Marley to look forward to. The project is being developed by Jenny Ash, a British filmmaker who was nominated for an Emmy for her work on the documentary miniseries ‘America-The Story of Us’.
Bob’s story has all the elements of a riveting biopic- bullied as a child for his mixed race ancestry, bit of a musical genius, unusual beliefs, 11 kids, and tragic death at a young age. However, this will apparently not be one of those biopics that covers an entire lifetime but more a specific point in his life. That specific point is 1977 when...

When you have a legend like Bob Marley, then you know that every project about his life will be a success.
At least, that’s what Emmy nominated director Jenny Ash is thinking, since she is developing a new film on the life of legendary reggae singer.
The biopic of legendary Marley will focus on the year when he lived in London, or if you prefer more details:
“1977 was a crucial year for Marley. He’d fled Jamaica after an attempt was made on his life; the year ended with him sustaining a soccer injury which eventually triggered full-blown cancer.
It was the year of punk rock; in London Marley hung out with the Sex Pistols. It was also the year of his legendary Rainbow Theatre gig. Crucially, he also started an affair with Jamaican beauty queen Cindy Breakspeare, who had just been crowned Miss World.

Jenny Ash, the Emmy-nominated UK director for "America -- the Story of Us," is planning to work on a Bob Marley biopic according to Deadline Hollywood. This one will focus on Marley's life in London in 1977. Why? It was a colorful year for Marley -- he fled Jamaica, he sustained a soccer injury, and it was also the year of his iconic Rainbow Theater gig.
Ash is adamant to showcast Marley the man, rather than Marley the legend. She tells Deadline, .There.s never been a fiction film about Marley...We.ve never had a sense of him as a real man, as opposed to the legend."
The big problem for Ash and company? They don't have the rights to Marley's songs yet. And a bigger question? Who should play Marley?...

In the news today is word of an upcoming Bob Marley biopic from Emmy-nominated director Jenny Ash. The story of the celebrated Rastafarian reggae singer has never been committed to film, though two other projects are reportedly in the works. One had Martin Scorsese attached, though he dropped out, supposedly to be replaced by Jonathan Demme. The other, an adaptation of the book "No Woman No Cry: My Life With Bob Marley," is in development at The Weinstein Company. Little has been heard on either project since 2008.
Deadline reports today that Ash, who is up for an Emmy for her work on "America - The Story of Us," is developing a film focused on Marley's year spent in London, in 1977. It was a pivotal time for the reggae singer, as it was the year he was diagnosed with the cancer that would be the cause of his death in...

Although a documentary and a biopic focusing on reggae singer Bob Marley have both risen and fallen a couple times in Hollywood, yet another attempt to tell he singer's life story is on the way. Deadline reports Jenny Ash, who recently found success with the doc series "America: The Story of Us," is developing a Bob Marley biopic focusing on the year that the singer spent living in London in 1977. This time in his life isn't just a random choice, but is regarded as one of the most crucial in his life following fleeing Jamaica after someone tried to kill him. Towards the end of his year in London came the revelation that he had cancer. In between there's plenty of life in his story involving The Sex Pistols, a love triangle and much more. With as much love as there is for Bob Marley out there, not just ...

Deadline reports that Emmy nominated British director Jenny Ash (who’s installment of “America—The History of Us” was introduced by Barack Obama) wants to make a biopic about Bob Marley. More specifically, she wants to make a film about Bob Marley in 1977. Ash’s feature will concentrate on the year Marley spent living in London in 1977. This was a crucial year for Marley. There is one minor hiccup of note, however. It seems the filmmakers don’t presently have the rights to any of Marley’s songs. That sounds like a problem. I imagine that would...

UK director Jenny Ash ("America: The Story of Us") is developing a biopic of reggae legend Bob Marley for Greenacre Films says Deadline.
The story will concentrate on the year Marley spent living in London in 1977 after he fled from Jamaica in the wake of an assassination attempt.
During that year he started an affair with just crowned Miss World Cindy Breakspeare, performed his legendary Rainbow Theatre gig, hung out with the Sex Pistols, and sustained a soccer injury which eventually triggered full-blown cancer.
The focus of the story will be on the love triangle between Marley, his wife Rita and Breakspeare. One big catch however is that the filmmakers don't have rights to the songs yet which Rita Marley controls.

While you might not have ever heard of Jenny Ash, you may have seen her work on the History Channel's 12-part series "America - The Story of Us". Her segment, which dealt with slavery and the Civil War, was introduced by President Barack Obama and made a big enough splash to garner her an Emmy nomination. Now, according to Deadline, Ash is parlaying that success into developing a biopic of legendary reggae musician Bob Marley, and particularly, one that focuses on the year when...

We've been reporting for years now on several different incarnations of a potential Bob Marley biopic-- first Jamie Foxx was going to tackle the role, then Martin Scorsese was going to make a documentary that he then handed over to Jonathan Demme, then the Weinstein Company picked up the rights to wife Rita Marley's memoir and planned a biopic based on that. But here we are several years in and none of these projects have gotten anywhere-- so why not kick off a new one, right? The odds are even tougher this time around-- documentary director Jenny Ash is embarking on the project with no access to Marley's music, and given that the story she wants to tell is about Marley's affair with former Miss World Cindy Breakspeare, it's unlikely Marley's widow Rita, who controls the estate, is going to offer them up. Still, the story...

Almost 30 years after his death, we still have yet to see a theatrically-released biopic or documentary based on the life of Robert Nesta “Bob” Marley.
There have been a number of attempts over the last decade or so that either eventually died, or stalled, for one reason or another, and I’ll re-address those in a second.
First, this morning brings news that Emmy Award-winning British director Jenny Ash is developing a feature film that will concentrate on Marley’s 1-year sojourn in London, in 1977 (although he actually spent close to 2 years there in a self-imposed exile, after a near-fatal 1976 assassination attempt) – a important year in Marley’s life, the year he discovered he had the cancer that would eventually kill him. It was also the period when he recorded his great Exodus and Kaya albums – the former producing hit singles, Exodus, Waiting in Vain, Jamming, and One Love. Marley...
