Fairy tales, in their undiluted forms, need no help when it comes to being creepy and horrifying. However, the Disneyfication of these classic stories makes it rather easy to forget their morbid beginnings. In the case of Cinderella, most modern adaptations of this quintessential rags-to-riches tale rarely bring up the violent aspects. All of that has been long removed in favor of safer elements, such as fairy godmothers and anthropomorphic mice. Yet, when reimagining the flaxen servant-turned-princess as someone who seeks “bloody vengeance,” Tom Jolliffe looked to the past; the Cinderella’s Revenge screenwriter found inspiration in the character’s gruesome roots.
The Brothers Grimm did not come up with Cinderella (or Aschenputtel) all on their own, but their familiar variation provides part of the source material for Cinderella’s Revenge. Charles Perrault is also credited, seeing as his French version (Cendrillon) was the first to feature the fairy godmother,...

Nutcracker Massacre opens with a pervy delivery guy indulging his inner voyeur at the expense of Clara before a giant nutcracker doll (Christophe Monplaisir; Sandwiched) armed with a sharp icicle teaches him the error of his ways. That’s followed by the inevitable rewind to a couple of days earlier.
Clara’s Aunt Marie (Julie Stevens; Mega Lightning) invites her and her boyfriend Paul to her place for the holidays. She accepts but for reasons unknown Clara is reluctant to tell her aunt that she dumped Paul for cheating on her. She stops along the way and buys a nutcracker from Dimitri for her aunt. But when she arrives she finds she already has a life-sized one, and the one she bought has become a sugar plum faerie.

This seasonal slash-fest starring Patrick Bergin is a plodding and unimaginative addition to the anti-Christmas genre
This yuletide slasher movie is about as enjoyable as being force-fed a Christmas tree and having it violently pipeclean your insides. It joins Black Christmas, Bad Santa and this year’s Violent Night in the anti-Christmas oeuvre – but its placeholder characters, this’ll-do dialogue and mechanical gallery of kills show that seasonal subversion alone won’t cut it.
Novelist Clara (Beatrice Fletcher) is reeling from her boyfriend Paul (Andy Dixon) cheating on her and decides to bunker down at the country manor of Auntie Marie (Julie Stevens) for the holidays. She needn’t worry too much, though, being a “timeless beauty”, as the local antiques dealer tells her – before fiendishly tweaking his moustache and flogging her a Nutcracker doll as a gift. But when she gets to her destination, it turns out her aunt...

Croc! is the latest in a long line of films about crocodiles and alligators seeking revenge on mankind for turning their relatives into shoes and handbags. I’ve often wondered why there’s not more of them actually. Like sharks, these leftovers from the age of dinosaurs have large mouths full of sharp teeth and can be found all over the world. But unlike sharks they can come out of the water after you making them much more of a threat.
Lisa King is getting married and her father Dylan has bagged her a wonderful location for it. He also bagged himself the hostess while he was touring it, but that’s another matter. Right now she’s dealing with a lack of cell reception and stories of missing locals which are scaring the bridesmaids.

Not to be confused with the Hugh Jackman film of the same name, this Van Helsing, originally titled Wrath of Van Helsing, is a British film from producer Scott Jeffrey and his Jagged Edge Productions. And regular readers of this site will know what that means…
Four English lasses Ellie, Briony, Alex, and Shauna are going hiking.
And where you may ask are they going hiking in fishnet stockings and thigh-high boots? The Zone, which they must have thought was a goth club. Actually, it’s a fenced-off nuclear dumping ground, England’s answer to Chernobyl. And not only is it fenced off, but there’s also garlic on the road into it. Beneath the Surface, the new film from directors Scott Jeffrey and Rebecca Matthews, the team that gave us The Gardener, Exorcist Vengeance and so many others, begins with scenes of a shark attacking a man and his two daughters. It’s a flashback, one of the many that Lexy has about it.
The film then goes back three months to South Africa and the inquest into the accident that led to her, her father Bill and sister Chloe being in the water and attacked by sharks. Lexy is the only one of the three to survive long enough to be rescued by her boyfriend Isaac (Matthew Marcelis; Camerawoman) and stepmother Vicky.
None of that is a spoiler, because Beneath the Surface isn’t a killer shark movie,...
