Oscar-nominated producer Albert S. Ruddy, who died at the end of May 2024, was one of only nine producers to earn two or more Best Picture Academy Awards, and he won them within the longest historical interval of 32 years. Ruddy was awarded for his work on The Godfather (1972) as well as Million Dollar Baby (2004).
His experience making The Godfather became subject of the Paramount+ miniseries The Offer, in which Miles Teller portrayed Ruddy and his experience adapting Mario Puzo’s best-selling novel under Francis Ford Coppola’s direction.
Before his big-screen hits, Ruddy co-created Hogan’s Heroes, a sitcom that followed Allied prisoners in a Nazi Pow camp, with Bernie Fein.

A major transition at the top of a big company typically spells significant change. Just ask anyone who has worked for CNN while parent company WarnerMedia passed along to AT&T and then the new Warner Bros. Discovery.
But Fox News may — at least for now — remain as is, even though the network’s best-known backer, Rupert Murdoch, has signaled that he will step back from some parts of managing Fox Corp. and News Corp., handing the reins to his son, Lachlan, and becoming the companies’ chairman emeritus. Murdoch has vowed to remain active in matters of content, and people familiar with his management say it’s difficult to envision him not haggling over news cycles and Fox News Channel’s positioning on them.

Francis Ford Coppola achieved cinema perfection with The Godfather… and two years later, he did it again with The Godfather Part II. The two films remain some of the very best movies of all time, but much like Alien and Aliens, you might have a favourite. As for Al Pacino, The Godfather star clearly prefers the first movie.
Al Pacino recently sat down with David Rubenstein at the 92nd Street Y, New York for the People Who Inspire Us series. When Rubenstein asked Pacino if he thought The Godfather Part II was superior to the first movie, the actor replied, “No, I don’t. I really think it’s more — what would you call it — artistic or something, I don’t know. I don’t mean to play it down and be overly modest because I star in it with Bob de Niro, but at the same time, it’s a different film.

The conservative news and commentary channel Newsmax will return to the lineup of satellite giant DirecTV, nearly two months after a carriage dispute broke out and became a political football.
The companies announced the new deal Wednesday morning, adding that Newsmax will return to DirecTV and its streaming offering on Thursday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, though DirecTV says Newsmax will be available at no extra cost to customers.
“This resolution with Newsmax, resolving an all-too-common carriage dispute, underscores our dedication to delivering a wide array of programming and perspectives to all our customers,” said Bill Morrow, DirecTV’s CEO, in a statement. “Through our persistent negotiations, we reached a resolution under mutually-agreeable business terms allowing us to deliver the conservative news network at the right value – a reflection of the free market at work.”

DirecTV has reached a carriage deal with conservative news outlet Newsmax, ending two months of media industry acrimony that spilled into Washington.
Under the new multi-year deal, Newsmax will return Thursday to DirecTV satellite systems, DirecTV Stream internet bundles and U-verse cable. With about 13 million subscribers, DirecTV is one of the top pay-tv providers in the U.S.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but the parties said Newsmax will be available without an additional charge to DirecTV subscribers. A live, linear stream of Newsmax has been available for free on YouTube, a fact DirecTV noted in its public statements objecting to the news outlet’s fee demands, but that feed has been expected to end later this year. Across all of its linear and digital platforms, Newsmax claims reach to 40 million U.S. households.
The channel went dark in January, with DirecTV balking at what it called “significant fees” being demanded by Newsmax.

Republican lawmakers have rushed to the defense of far-right TV network Newsmax after the channel was dropped by AT&T’s DirecTV. According to the satellite television provider, the split stemmed from a carriage fee dispute that would have resulted in “significantly higher costs” and increased customer fees. The channel claims they are being wrongfully censored for their political viewpoints, and have already found allies amongst Republican lawmakers.
The party of free-market capitalism has responded to DirecTV booting Newsmax by arguing that the network should carry the Trump-loving propaganda network, financial considerations be damned.

DirecTV will no longer broadcast conservative news channel Newsmax, TheWrap has confirmed.
Per a statement from the company, the move came late Tuesday as a result of an ongoing carriage fee dispute.
A DirecTV spokesperson confirmed Wednesday that as of of 11:59 p.m. the night prior, Newsmax is no longer available on DirecTV, DirecTV Stream or U-verse.
“On multiple occasions, we made it clear to Newsmax that we wanted to continue to offer the network, but ultimately Newsmax’s demands for rate increases would have led to significantly higher costs that we would have to pass on to our broad customer base,” the spokesperson said.

Conservative network Newsmax has gone dark on DirecTV, and Republican lawmakers are accusing the privately held distributor of “an assault on free speech.”
DirecTV, which is owned by AT&T and private equity firm Tpg, blamed the disruption in carriage on “significant fees” being requested by the news outlet.
“We’ve discussed with Newsmax on several occasions that we’d like to offer their programming, however the network is now seeking significant fees that we would have to pass on to our broad customer base,” the operator said in a statement. “Additionally, the same programming offered by Newsmax today is already available at no charge to 100 of U.S. households including our customers via NewsmaxTV.com, YouTube.com and on multiple streaming platforms like Amazon Fire TV, Roku and Google Play.”

The Cameras From The Horror-Comedy Deadstream Are Still Streaming, And You Can Watch Them Right Here
Warning: this article contains spoilers for "Deadstream."
Joseph and Vanessa Winter's "Deadstream" is a current front-runner for one of the best horror releases of 2022, boasting a perfect blend of horror, comedy, and found-footage elements as well as one of the scariest scenes of the year. The low-budget fan favorite centers on a disgraced YouTuber named Shawn Ruddy (Joseph Winter) who tries to redeem his soiled reputation by hosting a livestream in a haunted house and breaking every possible horror movie rule in an attempt to keep his sponsors happy, and his audience from clicking away.
Utilizing the new technology that's become standard for streamers, Ruddy installs 13 different cameras around the haunted house, including head-strap cameras to show his own Pov and a camera tied onto a spear to give the most Sam Raimi-esque camera movement possible. If the story of "Deadstream" is to be believed, Shawn Ruddy's cameras should theoretically still be rolling,...

Directors Joseph and Vanessa Winter made something special with "Deadstream," a thrilling and hilarious Pov horror film about a disgraced YouTuber desperately attempting to win back his audience by pulling the most ridiculous stunt imaginable. Joseph Winter stars as the fictional Shawn Ruddy, an insufferable online personality armed with all of the hot new technological gadgets viewers assume (and often demand) all creators utilize, who breaks into a notorious haunted house called Death Manor to livestream his overnight stay.
As this is a film starring a YouTuber-turned-streamer, Ruddy does just about everything a horror movie has taught us not to do in a haunted house, including destroying sacred items, performing a seance, reading Latin out loud, and talking wicked smack about the ghostly inhabitants as a means to keep his viewers interested. The comparisons to "The Evil Dead" and "Hell House LLC" are easy to make and not inaccurate, but...

Thankfully, the found footage genre has evolved since the days of Paranormal Activity. With the rapid rise of iPhone cinematography, social media influencers, and a world that livestreams its every move, it’s a different game entirely in 2022. And one that husband-and-wife filmmaking team Vanessa and Joseph Winter crack wide open, in their balls-to-the-wall, mad-as-a-box-of-frogs web chiller Deadstream.
It might be your classic haunted house setting, but the Winters take things to new heights with their set-up. Joseph stars as disgraced YouTuber Shawn Ruddy, a man on a mission to regain his following, and prove to the world that he hasn’t actually been cancelled after all (despite what he did to that homeless man). A pitch-perfect takedown of every internet celeb who’s ever posted an apology video, he’s a man who’s not only stupid enough to livestream himself inside a notoriously creepy old manor where lots of people died,...

As depicted on the wildly entertaining Paramount+ series “The Offer,” the group that got together to make “The Godfather” was not necessarily on top of the world before the legendary Best Picture winner was released. Instead, people like producer Al Ruddy, director Francis Ford Coppola, and executive Robert Evans, struggled at first to be taken seriously.
“They’re a band of misfits,” Miles Teller, who plays Ruddy on the series, previously told Gold Derby. “They’re all kind of underdogs in their own right. Not a lot of people bet on any of them. They kind of got their one really big shot and they took it.”
So when it comes to Emmy Awards consideration, maybe it couldn’t have been any other way. Because despite its solid execution and an awards-friendly premise – an insider look at Hollywood and a show about the creative process – “The Offer” has struggled to...

When Miles Teller was brought on to lead “The Offer,” he knew it was a big responsibility – and not just because the Paramount+ limited series focuses on the backstage machinations that led to the creation of “The Godfather.” As real-life Oscar-winning producer Al Ruddy, Teller appears in almost every scene of the sprawling 10-episode series, which shot over nearly seven months during the coronavirus pandemic.
Teller “worked really hard,” his co-star Juno Temple previously told Gold Derby. The show, she said, is ultimately about how Ruddy fought for “things to be how you know they need to be” and how that “really does pay off.”
“Miles is somebody that believes that through and through,” she said.

What’s harder to work with when it comes to writing a limited series — true stories taken from real life, or the stuff of fiction? A panel of top writers debated the challenges of working with headline-driven and historical material during the final hour of Variety‘s Night in the Writers’ Room on June 9 at 1 Hotel in West Hollywood.
“There’s a little bit of a tightrope-walk in a true story that you don’t necessarily have to walk in fiction,” said Dustin Lance Black, the writer-producer behind FX’s “Under the Banner of Heaven.” He noted that the series, about the 1984 murder of a woman and her infant daughter in Salt Lake City, deals with three intertwined stories, one of which is fictional. “That one to me, I had a slightly easier time with. If I hit a dramatic wall and needed a complication, I was able to make it up.

Peter Bart and Mike Fleming Jr. worked together for two decades at Daily Variety. In this occasional column, two old friends get together and grind their axes, mostly on the movie business.
Mike Fleming Jr: We are seeing a lot of narrative limited series based on ventures where things went wrong — Theranos, WeWork, Uber – and two that went spectacularly right. There is more acrimony directed at Winning Time — a flagging LA Lakers franchise was infused by new owner Jerry Buss with Hollywood sex appeal and a Magic Johnson-led speed game that changed the NBA from a sleepy regional sport to a global juggernaut — and then there is The Offer, about the making of my all-time favorite American movie, The Godfather.
I loved watching Winning Time, and believe it could never have worked as well, had Magic, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Jerry West lorded over an authorized version. They never...

Exclusive: The Corleone family finally has come together for a real Italian dinner. In this clip from the May 12 episode of The Offer on Paramount+, Francis Ford Coppola (Dan Fogler) greets the cast of The Godfather for their first gathering before shooting commences on the film.
Much to Coppola’s delight, the actors immediately settle into their roles. Marlon Brando (Justin Chambers) sits at the head of the table and insists that his wife be served first. He then gives a speech thanking the group for attending his birthday meal.
The Offer is based on producer Albert S. Ruddy’s experience making the 1972 film that Coppola directed and adapted with Mario Puzo from Puzo’s bestselling novel. Besides Chambers and Fogler, The Offer stars Miles Teller as Al Ruddy, Matthew Goode as Robert Evans, Juno Temple as Bettye McCartt, Giovanni Ribisi as Joe Colombo, Burn Gorman as Charles Bluhdorn, Colin Hanks...

It is a story steeped in action and intrigue, but is it true?
The Offer, a new 10-part series starting April 28 on Paramount+, delivers an “inside” account of the making of The Godfather. It is a story about stalwart filmmakers who defied bullets and death threats from Mafia soldiers to deliver their great saga.
But not really. The TV series, written by Michael Tolkin, is loosely based on incidents and anecdotes supplied by Albert S. Ruddy, who produced the movie. They are vivid anecdotes, but they are at odds with the accounts of principals who made the movie — of which I am one — and who encountered a different reality.
The Italian-American activists who took an interest in the project in fact revered Mario Puzo’s bestselling novel and were desperate to find a way of mobilizing the film to raise funds for their own causes and charities. “The principals of the movie were celebrated,...

Every once in a long while, I manage to have an encounter with the film producer Albert S. Ruddy. It’s always—what?
Funny? Fascinating? Enlightening? Unexpected?
I think I’ll go with amazing.
It’s certainly amazing to see Al Ruddy, at the age of 91, credited as a producer of Cry Macho, which is set for release by Warner Bros. and HBO Max on Sept. 17–and not just because the movie is directed by and stars Clint Eastwood, who is also 91. To put things in perspective, Ruddy has been trying to get the picture made since I was an struggling doctoral student of Modern European History, which would be 46 years ago, give or take. Once, the film seems to have started, with Roy Scheider, in Mexico. (That would be somewhere among iterations that involved Burt Lancaster and Pierce Brosnan.) But something happened, and the plug got pulled. By then,...

As U.S.-Cuba relations continue to improve following President Barack Obama’s historic visit, Showtime will examine a period when they were at the lowest: during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. The pay cable network has put in development a four-hour limited series based on the book The Armageddon Letters, by James Blight and Janet M. Lang. It will be produced by two-time Oscar winner Albert S. Ruddy and Oscar nominee Mike Medavoy.
The book is based on the actual 43 documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act that chronicle the buildup to the Cuban Missile Crisis when the world teetered on the edge of nuclear destruction. The book is organized around the letters exchanged during the crisis between President John F. Kennedy, Soviet leader Nikita Krushchev, and Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
Phil Alden Robinson is set to write the adaptation and direct the potential limited series. Ruddy and Medavoy executive produce with Benjamin Anderson, and Todd Martens, with Alexandra Ruddy for Ruddy Productions.
Showtime recently filmed the Season 5 finale of its comedy House Of Lies in Cuba, marking the first time an American scripted series has shot in the country since the U.S. and Cuba restored diplomatic relations last summer.
