The creator of The Wheel of Time is promising some unprecedented television when the adaptation of Robert Jordan’s fantasy series returns to Prime Video soon for a third season.
“The first 15 minutes of Season 3 is one of the most bonkers set pieces I’ve ever seen on television,” said executive producer Rafe Judkins, who together with stars Rosamund Pike and Daniel Henney, costume designer Sharon Gilham and make-up/hair designer Davina Lamont, sat down for a chat Tuesday at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience. “I was just watching it this week and it is absolutely bananas what our team pulled off … just a bunch of women in their 40s and 50s shredding each other, and it is wonderful to behold.”

To create infamous cult leaders (“American Horror Story: Cult”), a legendary painter (“Genius: Picasso”), a world-renowned designer (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”) and the alter-egos of 1930s Hollywood (“The Last Tycoon”) — not to mention the return of one of the most beloved characters in television (Kyle MacLachlan’s FBI agent Dale Cooper in “Twin Peaks”) — the challenges in non-prosthetic makeup were equal parts honoring history and creating a legacy.

Eryn Krueger Mekash is often asked why “American Horror Story: Cult” used real footage of Marshall Applewhite when they recreated all other famous cult leaders. “We didn’t,” she says. “That’s Evan [Peters] in makeup. When you fool an audience like that, it’s very rewarding.” Especially when on a tight schedule: Mekash and her team are used to having just 24 hours to prep. On “Cult,” the challenge was being historically accurate while...

“We’re really looking for figures who were transformative in their field, and that have left a kind of indelible mark,” reveals “Genius” showrunner Kenneth Biller about the criteria he uses to choose subjects for the NatGeo anthology series. Season one focused on the life of theoretical physicist Albert Einstein (Geoffrey Rush), but season two switched gears to examine surrealist painter Pablo Picasso (Antonio Banderas). The second installment now has seven Emmy nominations, including Best Limited Series and Best Movie/Mini Actor for Banderas. Watch our exclusive video interview with Biller above.

To be featured in this series, it’s not enough that the person be “an undeniable genius,” Biller explains. They also have to be “a recognizable figure,” and most importantly they need to have lived a life “that was long...

NatGeo entered the Emmy race in a big way last year with its new anthology series “Genius.” The first season focused on the life of scientist Albert Einstein (Geoffrey Rush) and earned 10 nominations, including Best Limited Series, Best Movie/Mini Actor for Rush and Best Movie/Mini Directing for Ron Howard. The network hopes to repeat that success with the second season, which recounts the story of abstract painter Pablo Picasso. Gold Derby recently spoke with stars Antonio Banderas, Alex Rich and T.R. Knight. We also spoke with costume designer Sonu Mishra and makeup artist/hairstylist Davina Lamont, both of whom earned Emmy nominations for the show’s first season. Scroll down and click on each name below to be taken to their full interview.

Davina Lamont didn’t want Antonio Banderas to be “completely covered in prosthetics” to play Pablo Picasso for the second installment of the NatGeo anthology series “Genius.” Instead, she wanted a healthy balance between the actor’s own appearance and that of the Spanish surrealist painter. “I wanted him to not only look like Picasso,” she explains, but to “have an element of him in there as well.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Lamont above.

Fair to say, Antonio Banderas is the best thing about National Geographic’s second “Genius” series, “Picasso.” Born in Picasso’s home town in Malaga, Spain, 57 years ago, Banderas has turned down many offers to play Picasso since his 20s. But he finally stopped running away from the bigger-than-life abstract painter, and agreed to play the older Picasso from his 40s through his death at age 91 in Mougins, France in 1973, surrounded by loved ones. “He realizes… ‘this is my best painting’,” said Banderas.
The 11-part series was filmed in Hungary over five months, with Banderas arriving on set in the wee hours to endure five hours of prosthetic makeup. “It was exhausting,” said Banderas, who enjoyed creating Picasso with showrunner Ken Biller, makeup designer Davina Lamont, and costume designer Sonu Mishra. Banderas refused to see dailies, and said he only watched the first episode. It made him feel too self-conscious.
