Even Dr. Phil is getting in on TV’s frenzied battle for sports rights.
The daytime mainstay has long been known for doling out common-sense advice without any bull. Now that’s about to change.
Starting in July, a significant chunk of Professional Bull Riders events will be seen on Merit Street Media, the TV outlet launched earlier this year by Phil McGraw, who had previously hosted the syndicated “Dr. Phil” program between 2002 and 2023. As part of a new four-year deal, McGraw’s Merit Street will carry Pbr Teams events; the full schedule for Pbr Unleash The Beast, the sport’s individual competition series; and 50 episodes of “Pbr Now” a news, information, and analysis program.
“I think we’ll bring viewers to bull riding, and I think bull riding will bring viewers to us,” says McGraw in an interview.

With 11 feature films, six live-action series, nine animated series — and, lest we forget, one holiday special — the original “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope” is starting to feel like it was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. “Ahsoka” occupies an interesting spot at the nexus of “Star Wars” storytelling from the past couple decades, though.
The Disney+ series acts as a bridge between the worlds of Dave Filoni’s work on the excellent animated “Rebels” and the innovative technical approach to “The Mandalorian.” Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), former apprentice to Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), may have the challenge of trying to preserve the galaxy in the face of sinister threats from Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) and others, but “Ahsoka” has the challenge of blending templates set in animation with the demands of live-action — and pushing both forward, as the show takes Ahsoka and the...

CNN aims to return to the recipe that gave its viewers explorers of international cuisine such as Anthony Bourdain and Stanley Tucci.
After announcing in October of 2022 that the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet would pull back on the efforts that made it a name in original documentary series and films — ostensibly to cut costs at a time when its corporate parent was grappling with significant debt — CNN wants to get back into the business of developing original non-fiction series and movies.
“I think we are very much in the rebuild phase,” Amy Entelis, executive vice president for talent and content, tells Variety during a recent interview.
Mark Thompson, named in August to oversee CNN following a tumultuous run under predecessor Chris Licht, has articulated a strategy of building out new areas and verticals that can help the company win more customers and viewers. Original series would seem to be one of them.

Dawn Porter’s documentary about R&b icon Luther Vandross, “Luther: Never Too Much,” has been acquired by CNN Films in partnership with the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), IndieWire can reveal exclusively.
The documentary film, which first premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, will debut in 2025 first on television on CNN and OWN before it lands on Max.
The acquisition is encouraging news for CNN Films, which back in 2022 under former boss Chris Licht scaled back on its original documentary films. The brand moved away from acquisitions or commissioning projects and opted instead for newsy, quick turnaround docs produced in-house.
But CNN Films also partnered with Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios on this fall’s release of “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” so the two acquisitions, both from this year’s Sundance, is a positive step forward for the documentary brand.

The gambling scandal surrounding LA Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter is already getting the TV series treatment.
Lionsgate Television is in early development on a series focused on the scandal. No writer or network is currently attached to the project, but Scott Delman and Albert Chen are both attached to produce. Executive Max Elins is overseeing the project for Lionsgate Television, while Bryan Weiser negotiated the deal.
Ohtani made headlines the world over when he signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The star pitcher and designated hitter had for years been working with interpreter Ippei Mizuhara, but just one day into the 2024 MLB season, it was revealed that Mizuhara had stolen nearly $17 million from Ohtani to cover gambling debts. He was immediately fired and later turned himself in to federal authorities. It was just reported that he has plead guilty to bank and tax fraud charges.

Magnolia Pictures and Participant have released the trailer for “The Grab,” a new documentary from “Blackfish” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite.
“The Grab,” described as a global thriller, follows journalists from The Center for Investigative Reporting as they try to uncover the money and influence being used by countries, corporations and members of the uber elite to control the planet’s most vital resources. The film takes you “around the globe from Arizona to Zambia, to reveal one of the world’s biggest and least known threats,” per the official logline.
“’The Grab’ is a thrilling look at urgent threats to our national security and our very way of life,” said Courtney Sexton, Participant’s executive vice president, Documentary Film and Television. “We are proud to help bring this incredible film to life and are excited that it is part of our legacy.”
Last month, Variety exclusively reported that Participant was shutting down after 20 years.

In horror, bodies are usually split into parts, not the movies themselves.
Lots of slasher icons are revived for sequel upon sequel over the years but very few franchises — in any genre — have released a trilogy of movies within one year. Lionsgate’s “The Strangers” is breaking down the door in an ambitious, three-chapter strategy to give horror fans a never-before-seen horror “odyssey.”
This isn’t the first time “The Strangers” has come sneaking into theaters. The original 2008 film, inspired by real-life break-ins and the Charles Manson murders, starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a not-so-happy couple who get an unwelcome knock at their door in the middle of the night. They turn away a creepy woman asking “Is Tamara home?” but are soon plagued by masked, knife-wielding home invaders. The movie became a sleeper hit, making $82 million off a $9 million budget, and 10 years it later spawned a sequel,...

“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” star Mariska Hargitay gave a powerful speech on Thursday in New York during Variety‘s Power of Women event, presented by Lifetime. The two-time Emmy winner, who celebrated 25 years of “Svu” this year, was honored at the event for her work as an advocate for sexual assault survivors.
Hargitay took the stage at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum following an introduction by her close friend, Glenn Close. After many years of acting, “she still finds the heart, the art and the power in her craft,” Close said of Hargitay.
With the New York rape conviction for Harvey Weinstein recently overturned, Hargitay themed her speech around the impossibility of reversing her own strongly-held convictions about listening to survivors and fighting back.

Iconic US-based global Asian fusion restaurant chain P.F. Chang’s just opened their doors for foodies in Gurugram and it wouldn’t be wrong to say that one will be “wrapped” around each dish as every bite bursts with flavours in the mouth like a “dynamite”.
The popular restaurant chain, famous for its signature dishes such as lettuce-wrapped chicken and Dynamite Shrimp, was founded in 1993 by American restaurateurs Philip Chiang and Paul Fleming.
It celebrates the 2,000-year-old tradition of wok cooking and honours the cultures and recipes primarily of China, Japan, Korea and Thailand.
Keeping in mind the sensibilities of Gurugram’s food, the restaurant chain has tweaked its menu. For instance, as Ramit Bharti Mittal, Executive Chairman & Director, Gourmet Investments, pointed out, the famous Dynamite Shrimp of P.F. Chang’s comes in chicken and paneer variants.

Actor Nathan Fillion’s star power grew thanks to starring in shows like Castle and The Rookie. But before those two hit shows, he considered his sci-fi cult hit Firefly as the show that kick-started his career.

Fillion initially didn’t know he’d be able to make a living from acting. In an interview with Closer, he confided that he saw acting as more of a side gig when he went to school. But getting an actual acting job that paid decently changed Fillion’s trajectory.
“I was going to finish off schooling and four months before graduation I got a job on a soap and moved to New York City. I did three years there, moved to Los Angeles on the advice of Bob Woods, who played my uncle on the show.

Chris Keyser and David Goodman, the veteran showrunners who steered the five-month Writers Guild of America strike last year, warned guild members on Sunday to stay vigilant in a fast-changing business landscape despite the gains of last year’s historic labor action.
“Though this strike is over, the fight goes on. If we take our eye off the ball, everything we gained can literally go away tomorrow,” Goodman told the crowd at the Writers Guild Awards at the Hollywood Palladium.
Goodman and Keyser served as co-chairs of the WGA’s negotiating commttee last year. The pair, both past presidents of the WGA West, were honored with the guild’s Morgan Cox Awards for dedicated service.
“Nothing is given to labor that it does not demand,” Keyser told the crowd.

Last year, Angel Studios opened a booth at CinemaCon in Last Vegas to launch its distribution arm. That paid off handsomely after “Sound of Freedom” exploded to a $250 million worldwide gross. This year, they took to a much bigger stage for a Caesar’s Palace breakfast presentation and announced its intention to stun the industry again.
The Angel headliner was “David,” an animated musical based on the Biblical story of David vs. Goliath. Or, as the studio’s chief marketing officer Alex Nielsen told the audience: “We intend to release the most successful animated film of all time.”
Angel dated “David” for Thanksgiving weekend 2025, but it presented a full trailer and a full song to a packed, standing-room only house inside the Palace Ballroom. The trailer also touted that former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow is an executive producer on the project.

One day after President Joe Biden said he was “outraged and heartbroken” over an Israel Defense Force attack that killed seven World Central Kitchen team members distributing food in Gaza, Wck founder José Andrés gave an emotional interview to Reuters in which he said, “What I know is that we were targeted deliberately, nonstop until everybody was dead in this convoy.”
Israel has expressed “extreme sorrow” over the deaths, and the country’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack on aid workers was not intentional.
Asked if he believed that official explanation, the celebrity chef responded, “Initially, I would say categorically no,” reiterating that Wck communicated its movements to the Idf, it was in a zone controlled by the Idf and the convoy was clearly marked with his organization’s logo posted even on the roofs of some vehicles.

After a challenging start to the year, the French box office steadied in March with 15 million tickets sold, led by Warner Bros’ Dune: Part Two.
This was a dip of just 4.8% on March 2023. While not desirable, this is much less than the dip of 16.4% in February 2024 compared to the same month the year before which was buoyed by crowd-pleasing French titles Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom and Alibi.com 2 that dominated the box office in early 2023. Reality television star Caitlyn Jenner has come out in support of a New York county’s ban on transgender female athletes.
Jenner, a transwoman, came out to the public in April 2015.
Jenner is also a former Olympic gold medalist, who won the men’s decathlon competition at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Canada.
Last week, Jenner supported the ban on trans athletes during a press conference alongside Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman in Mineola.
The ban would prevent transgender athletes on female sports teams from using county-owned facilities. It applies to over 100 athletic facilities in New York City’s Long Island suburbs, including ballfields, basketball and tennis courts, swimming pools and ice rinks.
The ban does not apply to trans men, only trans women.
She said that having trans women compete would “ruin women’s sports” in the future.
“Let’s stop it now while we can,” she urged people.
Her comments have received criticism,...

Screenwriter Tony Spiridakis wasn’t familiar with the Museum of the Moving Image’s Marvels of Media Festival — which celebrates the work of mediamakers with autism — before penning his star-studded film Ezra, about parenting a child on the spectrum. But he quickly became a supporter after MoM founder and former AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan reached out.
“[The festival] understands the power of empathy and the undeniable beauty of diversity,” says Spiridakis, who now sits on its advisory board alongside Ezra director Tony Goldwyn. “It shows the unfiltered, authentic expression that comes from the unique perspectives of autistic mediamakers, something Hollywood and all artists can benefit from.”
Marvels of Media, taking place until tomorrow in Queens, joins the ReelAbilities Film Festival, which runs April 3 through 10, and is hosting Ezra’s New York premiere on opening night. Both of the film festivals are dedicated to disabled filmmakers and narratives showcasing characters with a disability.

The new episode of ‘Shark Tank India 3’ witnessed a flurry of excitement as the gourmet popcorn brand, ‘Popcorn and Company’ sealed a lucrative deal worth Rs 75 lakh with shark Namita Thapar.
However, tensions ran high when the pitcher silenced shark Peyush Bansal, sparking a reaction that left Anupam Mittal visibly frustrated.
The founder of ‘Popcorn & Co’ Vikas Suri started his pitch, saying, “Popcorns sold in 99 per cent of the multiplexes use our machines, our seeds, and our spices. ‘Munna Bhai is incomplete without Circuit’. Similarly, the experience of watching a film is incomplete without eating popcorn. We can’t enjoy a film without popcorn. When ‘Sholay’ was released 50 years ago, salty popcorn was sold in small packets. And even now, when films like ‘Jawan’ and ‘Pathaan’ were released, popcorn was sold in cinemas.”
“For instance, caramel, cheesy sriracha, and butter salted popcorn. However, nowadays, people don’t just watch films in the theatre.
