By the time Halloween wraps up, most people have tucked away their pumpkins and spider webs in favour of colourful wreaths and Santa figurines. For horror fans, it means Krampus and blood covered snow now take centre stage. The holiday of Christmas naturally lends itself to the horror genre, spawning favourites that include Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night, Rare Exports, and more. However, many films are too gruesome for younger people to enjoy.
To let children in on the festive and frightful fun, here is a variety of age-appropriate Christmas horror film and television specials the entire family can enjoy.
Creeped Out: Splinta Claws (2019)

“Everyone knows there are nice children as well as naughty. But are there good and bad Santas as well?” This question is posed in the opening of the “Splinta Claws” episode of the anthology series Creeped Out on Netflix, which originally released in the UK and Canada.

"Who do you work for?" "Every married man will understand this – I work for Mrs. Claus!" Disney has revealed an official trailer for a holiday fantasy comedy titled Dashing Through The Snow, directed by Tim Story (who last made The Blackening). Arriving for streaming in November on Disney+, meaning this movie is skipping theaters entirely. A divorced social worker for the Atlanta police despises Christmas due to a painful childhood memory. When sent on a call while spending Christmas Eve with his daughter, he inadvertently evokes the wrath of a local politician but meets a strange man who helps him understand the joy and magic of Christmas. Another Black Santa movie out this year (along with The Naughty Nine). Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges stars with Teyonah Parris, Madison Skye Validum, Lil Rel Howery as "Saint Nick", Oscar Nuñez, Ravi V. Patel, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Gina Brillon, Sebastian Sozzi, Kevin Connolly, and Zulay Henao.

Comedian Matt Rogers was stoned, wandering the streets of New York City, reeling from a bad breakup, and trying desperately to unlock the lyrics of a song steeped in this heartbreak — that also had to fit on his Christmas album. He had the start of a hook (“Go get everything you want…”) and a core idea, hoping his ex will get everything he wants in life, even if Rogers won’t be the one to provide it. But that was it.

The mood isn’t entirely cheery as Tim Allen faces some serious competition in the trailer for the second season of Disney+’s The Santa Clauses.
This holiday-themed series returns to the platform with its two-episode season premiere set for Nov. 8, following the first season that launched last year. Eric Stonestreet joins the cast as Magnus Anta, aka the Mad Santa, who was in charge of the North Pole in the 14th century and aims to challenge the current reign of Scott Calvin (Allen) and his family.
“I am Santa, the rightful Santa,” Stonestreet exclaims in the footage released Tuesday. “The Santa who occupies the North Pole now is a fraud!” He adds, “Revenge will be swift — and sweet. I am Santa, after all.”
At a different point in the trailer, Mrs. Claus (Elizabeth Mitchell) is seen brandishing a futuristic weapon that goes by an intimidating name. “I’m a...

Even though we're not done with Halloween, Disney isn't wasting anytime digging back into the world of Santa Claus with a second season of the Disney+ original series "The Santa Clauses." Tim Allen is back as jolly old Saint Nick, and now he's focusing on turning all the happenings at the North Pole into a family business. Elizabeth Mitchell is still as supportive as ever as Mrs. Claus, Cal Calvin Claus (Austin Kane) is preparing to eventually become Santa Claus at some point with a little Santa training program, and Sandra Calvin Claus is helping out in the background by taking care of the reindeer and whatnot.
Of course, getting the North Pole in shape for Christmas isn't their biggest concern; there's trouble brewing in the form of another Santa Claus. Eric Stonestreet ("Modern Family") is playing Magnus Antas or The Mad Santa. Apparently, he thinks Scott Calvin's version...

What do you call a fear of Santa Claus? Claus-tro-phobia. I can’t take credit for that corker – it’s from a SpongeBob SquarePants episode, and it’s also delivered by Alexann in the new HBO Max documentary, Santa Camp. Alexann is a kid who’s turned up to a church in Chicago to meet “Trans Santa”. Unfortunately, so have a handful of Proud Boys and other protesters, who hold “Save Santa” signs while shouting that Trans Santa is “destroying America”.
“The Bible that I read says this is a sin,” says one guy, wearing Proud Boys merch. As the disembodied voice of Santa Camp director Nick Sweeney points out, “Santa’s not in the Bible.

Violent Night is one of many tongue-in-cheek genre-twisting movies to involve Christmas. It’s also a movie that went up against big Hollywood releases such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and turned heads when it still performed better than estimated despite not winning any weekends. However, the director credits other action reimaginings like Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters for opening the gate for an outside-the-box film like this.
The Hollywood Reporter also reveals that a sequel is already in the works. The director, Tommy Wirkola, recently talked with them about what he plans to do for the follow-up.
Of course the writers have talked about it, and I have thrown some ideas out there. We don’t see the North Pole, we don’t see Mrs. Claus and we don’t see the elves. There were also a few ideas that we loved in the script, but we had to...

“Violent Night” is winning praise for its off-kilter take on Christmas, with “Stranger Things” star David Harbour as a battle-hardened warrior Santa who takes on a band of murderous mercenaries on Christmas Eve.
That praise is also being heaped on director Tommy Wirkola, whose previous films include the equally genre-bending “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters”, and in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter he reveals that as soon as he read the script, he knew he was the director to do justice to “Violent Night”.
“And when I read that script, the first thing I said was, ‘I was born to make this film.’It was just so up my alley, and I knew I could do the tone, the crazy action, the humour and all that stuff,” Wirkola said.

Christmas Bloody Christmas Review: A Robotic Santa Goes Haywire In This Uber-Stylish Holiday Slasher
Christmas has become a ripe season for horror. The holiday horror subgenre is alive and kicking, and it feels like every year we get at least a handful of Christmas-set creepers, usually involving some sort of killer Santa Claus. It's nothing new — Santa has been slashing for years, in one form or another. When TriStar Pictures released "Silent Night, Deadly Night" in 1984, complete with a poster featuring Santa's arm clutching an axe as he descends down a chimney, there was an uproar. The uproar was so loud that TriStar pulled the pic from theaters after a week — which wasn't such a big deal, as "Silent Night, Deadly Night" had already made back its meager budget, and then some, at that point.
"Silent Night, Deadly Night" wasn't the first film to feature some sort of evil Santa — 1978's thriller "The Silent Partner" has Christopher Plummer as a sadistic thief who dresses...

When “Fire Island” star Matt Rogers was putting together his new Showtime holiday special, “Matt Rogers: Have You Heard of Christmas?,” he sent an email to Mariah Carey inviting her to be on the show.
“I do not think it reached her, which is totally fair,” Rogers tells me, laughing, on this week’s “Just for Variety.” “But I wish that one day she does read it because I did tell her a story about being obsessed with her from a young age.”
In fact, he was only 10 years old when he asked for Carey concert tickets for Christmas. “I came out when I was 19. That was when I verbally said it,” says Rogers, who has gathered quite the fanbase for his work co-hosting the “Las Culturistas” podcast with Bowen Yang. “But I certainly, emotionally and in action, came out when I was 10 years old on Christmas and got Mariah...

Every family has their stable of Christmas movies that have to be watched during the month of December. New additions like "Spirited" starring Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell attempt to find a way into that annual rotation by updating "A Christmas Carol" and other holiday mainstays, which is a mild form of cheating as far as I'm concerned. Tried and true classics like "White Christmas" and "It's a Wonderful Life" may seem a little outdated, so take no shame in updating the Christmas movie list with "Love Actually" and "Die Hard", or even scarier entries like "Rare Exports" and "Krampus."
The big question for the new holiday action comedy "Violent Night" is whether or not an R-rated, butt-kicking Santa Claus (David Harbour) will end up being worthy of a re-watch each year. In any case, director Tommy Wirkola hopes that his version of a Christmas classic can deliver some crowd-pleasing...

In "Violent Night," David Harbour plays a Santa Claus who isn't afraid to knock back a beer or head-butt someone who's naughty. If that doesn't sell itself as a movie premise, I don't know what would. The "Stranger Things" star has hidden his face under red demon makeup before (see: "Hellboy"), but in "Violent Night," Harbour is donning a red stocking cap and grey beard, in service of "seasons beatings." And just because it's an action comedy doesn't mean he went into the role of Santa without doing some research.
Santa Claus as we know him has a long history dating back at least 200 years, when the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (now commonly known as "The Night Before Christmas") was published. The real Saint Nicholas and other historical antecedents like Father Christmas date back even further than that poem, by centuries. Harbour was conscious of this history when...

Tim Allen‘s Kringle has lost a bit of his jingle in Disney+’s The Santa Clauses, a six-episode continuation of the beloved Santa Clause film franchise that sees Scott Calvin contemplating his third act.
It’s been 28 years since Scott first transformed into Santa, and the world now suffers from a lack of Christmas magic. This becomes apparent to Scott when he is reunited with Sara, the little girl who left the allegedly lactose intolerant Claus soy milk in the original 1994 movie. If you’ve spent the last 28 years wondering about the logistics of Santa Claus falling off of a man’s roof and that man suddenly becoming Santa Claus, Disney+ is here to finally bring you some peace, some answers and a little bit of Christmas joy.
“The Santa Clauses” essentially serves as the fourth movie in the Disney franchise, a delightful six-episode series that catches up with the Calvin-Claus family 28 years after Scott (Tim Allen) first put on the suit and reluctantly became the big guy. While Santa is beloved by all the elves at the North Pole, his magic is beginning to fade. He’s losing weight, and Mrs. Claus (Elizabeth Mitchell) is struggling with her lack of a first name or personality. Their son Cal (Austin Kane) plays VR games of regular domestic life, and daughter Sandra’s (Elizabeth Allen-Dick) only real friends are animals. When head elf...

It’s not quite Christmastime yet, but Santa Claus is coming to town — or at least, Disney+ — this week. Tim Allen is suiting up once more in “The Santa Clauses,” and he’s flanked by some beloved characters from the original films. That said, Allen admits you won’t see everyone you know.
In the new series, the first two episodes of which premiere on Disney+ on Wednesday, we find Santa Claus, a.k.a. Scott Calvin, on the brink of turning 65. Realizing he can’t be Santa forever, he decides it’s time to retire, and give his kids a life in the real world. Elizabeth Mitchell returns as Mrs. Claus for the series, after first appearing in “The Santa Clause 2.”
But, it seems Mitchell is the only sequel character that will be in the series — at least for now.

That the Christmas spirit is no longer what it once was is the discontent at the heart of Disney+’s The Santa Clauses, which sees Tim Allen’s Santa pondering retirement after nearly three decades on the job.
Really, though, was it ever? This is a franchise that began (in the 1994 film The Santa Clause) with a bitterly divorced salesman killing Santa the night before Christmas. Its spun-sugar holiday magic has always been a little askew — and with the latest addition from creator Jack Burditt, it’s taken on a distinctly sour tinge.
Here is a Santa who gripes that “Saying ‘Merry Christmas to all’ has suddenly become problematic,” and huffs at the idea that deeming a kid too naughty for presents is “brat-shaming.” He’s taken aback to realize that the adorable moppet who left him soy milk 20-some years ago (as...
