Just Sam, the American Idol 2020 winner, returned for Season 22 to perform Whitney Houston’s “One Moment in Time.”
The singer went viral last year after revealing that despite winning Season 18 of the ABC competition, she had to return to performing in the NYC subways.
Just Sam won the singing show amid the Covid lockdowns and performed from home. Her return to the show allowed her to sing on the Idol stage and in front of the judges once again.

Could an upset be brewing on Season 21 of “American Idol”? All year fans have been forecasting Iam Tongi would take home the top prize, but he may not be the sure bet we’ve assumed. This season closely resembles a similar lineup up finalists from Season 17 when 18-year old country crooner Laine Hardy took down fan favorite Alejandro Aranda, who, like Iam, had become a viral sensation since his first audition.
This time around it’s 18-year old Mississippi native Colin Stough who has progressively grown his fanbase each week, delivering honky-tonk renditions of some of music’s most popular tunes. Like Laine, he was barely a blip on viewers’ radar in early rounds, but as judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie have pointed out, his star continues to rise.

During Sunday’s three-hour finale of “American Idol,” host Ryan Seacrest cryptically mentioned how Graham DeFranco had to fill in at the last second to sing with superstar Sheryl Crowe. But what viewers didn’t realize is that Graham had replaced Arthur Gunn, who was a no-show.
When asked about what happened with Gunn, judge Katy Perry simply called the controversy another “curveball” for this buzzed-about 19th season. It’s likely she was referring to two other singers who had exited the competition off-camera during the live shows: Wyatt Pike for personal reasons and Caleb Kennedy when a controversial video resurfaced.

“American Idol” was renewed for its 19th season in May — its fourth on ABC — days before host Ryan Seacrest crowned 21-year-old Harlem-based subway singer Just Sam as the show’s 18th winner.
Because of Covid-19, production on Season 18 shut down, but “Idol” managed to complete the season by doing virtual at-home shows with the remaining seven contestants performing partially live. By the end, it was between Nepalese-American guitarist and singer Arthur Gunn and Just Sam, whose renditions of Kelly Clarkson‘s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” and Audra Day‘s “Rise Up” won the most votes and America’s heart.
“Idol” is already looking ahead to next season, kicking off with virtual auditions. Here is everything to know so far.

It seems like yesterday that “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest virtually crowned 21-year-old Harlem-based subway singer Samantha Diaz aka Just Sam as the 18th winner of the reality talent competition.
But “Idol” is already preparing for Season 19, which will premiere on ABC in the spring of 2021. Just as the show found innovative ways to film each finalist in the safety of their own homes as the coronavirus pandemic raged on, the first round of auditions will rely on custom-built Zoom technology to host “Idol Across America,” its first-ever live virtual nationwide search for the next big singing sensation.

“American Idol” is resuming auditions, but amid the coronavirus pandemic, they will be held remotely, ABC announced Friday.
This allows the usual “Idol Across America” tour to expand out and include all 50 states plus Washington, D.C. — for the first time since the show’s inception. Auditions for the upcoming fourth season on the Alphabet network begin Aug. 10, and this time around, hopeful contestants can perform across any official audition date.
Those auditioning will still receive “face time” with a show producer — just digitally. This allows everyone to still receive feedback in real time. The show will use custom-built Zoom technology to host this nationwide search for the next singing sensation.
While this is the first time the show will be holding auditions this way, “Idol” is no stranger to remote production, having finished it most recent season that way. Contestants performed from their various homes, with the show’s...

Probably the last time most “American Idol” fans saw Laine Hardy, the Louisiana lad who won Season 17, was when he performed the Rascal Flatts tune “Life is a Highway” that was featured in the Pixar animated film “Cars” on May 10 for Disney night on Season 18, a few shows before Just Sam was proclaimed the winner. The show went to great lengths to maintain social distancing since the pandemic by allowing the performers to shelter in place and yet still compete.
Hardy himself did a virtual tour to promote his new single inspired by his Cajun roots, “The Ground I Grew Up On” and other new tunes by doing more than 15 online stops in April and May. But the 19-year-old country singer shared his diagnosis on his Facebook page and Instagram story on Sunday, June 21. He wrote, “This wasn’t what I expected on the first day of summer. Given that it is Pride Month, it might be a good time to discuss “American Idol” Season 18 winner Just Sam‘s acknowledging her sexuality in an interview with the New York Post last month. That makes her the first openly LGBTQ+ contestant to claim the prize.

Singer Kelly Clarkson debuted her syndicated talk show “The Kelly Clarkson Show” last fall, and in its first season on the air it has already made a big splash at the Daytime Emmys with seven nominations, which makes it the second most nominated talk show behind “The View.” And if Clarkson wins she’ll follow Jennifer Hudson as only the second “American Idol” alum to get halfway to Egot.
Hudson was infamously eliminated from “American Idol” in seventh place during the show’s third season, but she got the last laugh. She made her feature film debut in the musical “Dreamgirls” (2006) and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress; she’s still the only “Idol” alum with an Oscar on their mantel. Then she won her first Grammy in 2009: Best R&b Album for her self-titled debut collection. Then she won Best Musical Theater Album in 2017 for “The Color Purple.

The live remote housebound version of “American Idol’s” of the Season 18 finale that crowned Just Sam as the winner lacked the usual glitz, fanfare and onstage hugs that has defined ABC’s reality singing competition. But loyal viewers found much to like in this more intimate and heartfelt version of their favorite show that allowed us to see the contestants on their home turf with loved ones and friends.

The housebound edition of the 18th finale show of “American Idol” was more subdued than usual given that the final five hopefuls announced at the top of the show — Arthur Gunn, Dillon James, Just Sam, Francisco Martin and Johnny West — had no live audience cheering them on save for judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan and a coterie of family and friends at remote locales. Usually they can feed off the electricity of a packed auditorium of “Idol” fans, swaybots included. But the restrictions of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic muffled what is usually a rather boisterous celebration of music and talent that ends with the season’s competitors hugging each other and honoring the new “American Idol” with an explosion of confetti and good wishes.
Alas, because of the country’s continued need to shelter in place, this last show of the year was not being broadcast live nationwide.

Just Sam got the news of her win in the long-running reality show's first-ever remote finale. Production was halted and plans adjusted after the coronavirus spread causing mass production shutdowns. ABC’s “American Idol” named its third winner on Sunday, the singing competition’s first champion to be crowned from home due to pandemic-forced production shutdowns.

On the “American Idol” season 18 finale on Sunday, Just Sam pulled off an upset over Arthur Gunn, who had been the frontrunner all season long. In our overnight poll, a whopping 41% of those weighing in wanted Arthur to win and think that he was robbed of the season 18 title. Arthur earned far more votes than Just Sam, who has only 25% of the total tally as of this writing. “Between Catie Turner and Alejandro Aranda, I’ve really seen a spot for me here,” says Julia Gargano, a 22-year old college student from Staten Island, New York hoping to become the next “American Idol.” “I consider myself a songwriter. At age 8 I started taking piano lessons and that’s where the singer-songwriter part of my life began. I can’t picture myself doing anything else. Now Gargano is one of seven artists in the running to become the Season 18 winner.
