Anthony Diblasi’s Clive Barker’s Dread has a fascinating premise: it centers on a group of college students who engage in a project on fear, interviewing subjects who delve into their very worst fears in great detail and with transparent emotional vulnerability. The film, however, spends very little time on its central premise, focusing more on the changing relationships between the characters as the story progresses. This would be fine, however, if Dread contained a full cast of compelling characters. Unfortunately, the film tries to sustain itself on the weight of its weakest aspect. Based on one of Barker’s short stories, "Dread" (which has gone by either the single-name title or as titled with Barker’s ownership) concerns loner film student Stephen Grace (Jackson Rathbone) convinced by eccentric philosophy student Quaid (Shaun Evans), who is obsessed with the topic of fear and its causes, to engage in the previously mentioned project with Stephen’s collaborator »

Year: 2009
Directors: Anthony Diblasi
Writers: Anthony Diblasi & Clive Barker (short story)

Review by: Ben Austwick
Rating: 5 out of 10
Clive Barker's Books of Blood is a masterpiece of horror writing, an extensive collection of short, sharp, intelligent and above all scary stories that have already given us the classic horror film Candyman. The author himself wrote and directed Hellraiser, one of the best horror films of the eighties. His work comes with some pedigree then, and the promise of another adaptation from the Books of Blood, in this case Dread, one of few stories in the collection to follow a thriller rather than fantasy format, was a tantalising one. But director Anthony Diblasi struggles to make the story work on the big screen, confounded by the brevity and simplicity that makes it work so well on the page.

So, the August bank holiday has passed for another year and that means one thing – The Film4 Frightfest in London has just finished. This year held a special meaning to the festival though, with it greeting its 10th year in existence having moved, during that time, from humble beginnings in the Prince Charles Cinema, to the grander Odeon Leicester Square and finally, for the first time this year, to the Empire Cinema (also in Leicester Square). The Empire houses the largest cinema screen in the UK, which was used to display the main catalogue of films this year round. Trust me, this thing is absolutely massive.
Second to this, also for the first time ever, Frightfest organisers Alan, Ian, Paul and Greg decided to commandeer a smaller screen to show those movies they felt should be in the Fest, but couldn’t be worked into the main programme. This screen »

Just before leaving for San Diego Comic-Con, After Dark Films chief Courtney Solomon and his team gave Fango a few updates on next year’s After Dark Horrorfest 4, which will run January 29 to February 5 and include such high profile titles as Dread and The Graves (previously announced here). “Horrorfest will be back and better than ever,” Solomon tells Fango. “We are busy searching the globe for more films that preserve the quality and integrity of last year’s acquisitions, and we are confident that our loyal fans will be pleased with the 2010 lineup.”
After Dark’s latest addition comes in the form of Dread (see review here), the latest short story adaptation from Clive Barker’s Books Of Blood. Produced by Barker himself and written/directed by first time filmmaker/frequent Barker collaborator Anthony Diblasi, Dread revolves around three students who have set out to produce a documentary about fear »

After taking a never-ending train ride from Croton-on-the-Hudson, NY, my buddy and I finally arrived in Montreal, rushed back to his place via the metro to drop off our bags at his apartment and sped off to Théàtre Hall Concordia just in time to catch Fantasia’s 9:45 p.m. screening of Dread, the latest film adaptation from Clive Barker’s Books Of Blood. Coincidentally, I had just recently reread my three-volume American collection of Barker’s excellent and groundbreaking short stories, and so I entered the theater with “Dread” fresh in my mind.
First-time writer-director Anthony Diblasi has worked on Barker projects before, having executive-produced The Plague (also second-unit director), Book Of Blood and The Midnight Meat Train, and with Dread he has taken the core of the source material and expanded upon, altered and rearranged it—to a mixed but overall positive result. The setup is simple: Three »

When it comes to the world of Clive Barker, filmmaker Anthony Diblasi is already well versed. He served as one of the executive producers on both The Midnight Meat Train and Book Of Blood, has recently adapted a script for another Book Of Blood short story Pig Blood Blues, and made his directorial debut with the upcoming Dread, which he also wrote. Now, word comes from Fantasia (via Fangoria) that Diblasi is tackling another Clive Barker adaptation, The Damnation Game. At the film fest, word came out that the writer was currently prepping a script for Damnation Game for Phoenix Pictures. No word on if he'll direct, but it's still a whiles off so we'll keep you posted.
Dread was written & directed by Anthony Diblasi and stars Jackson Rathbone (Twilight, S. Darko), Shaun Evans, Hanne Steen, Laura Donnelly, Jonathan Readwin, Carl McCrystal, Zoe Stollery, Eva Wyrwal, Elissa Dowling, Kirean Murphy, »

Dread (UK/Us): I'm going to act like I don't know how Clive Barker's original short story played out, as I didn't know when going into the film, but that still leaves this adaptation a bit too long-winded for its own good. Stephen (Jackson Rathbone) and Quaid (Shaun Evans) team up for a college project on what people fear most, and sure enough, this little social experiment of theirs goes too far. It's an interesting premise, eventually carried out to a foreseeable but intense climax, shot moodily throughout by first-time director Anthony Diblasi, but the redundant dorm-worthy moralizing delivered by our fairly obvious villain and a tacked-on ain't-that-wicked twist only make it more apparent that Dread was a story perhaps better deserving of, say, a "Masters of Horror" episode rather than a feature-length treatment.

Dread Directed by Anthony Diblasi Clive Barker has a less than sterling record when it comes to having compelling films made from his novels and short stories, and Anthony Diblasi's Dread, despite some appealing performances and at least one sequence of pin-drop anxiety, isn't able to buck the trend. Ultimately, a series of questionable screenplay and directorial decisions sink both the film's credibility and its possible effectiveness as a genuinely disturbing piece. The film opens as film-school student Stephen (an appealing Jackson Rathbone) is approached by Quaid (Shaun Evans), a zealous colleague who wants to use Stephen's need for a thesis project as the jump-off point for a filmic study of people's innermost fears. Also floating around the periphery are Cheryl, Stephen's squeeze and partner on the project, and Abby, Stephen's amorous co-worker, who bears a striking and socially debilitating birthmark. As they interview more and more subjects, however, »
