Lisa Hommel was born and raised in Princeton, N.J with her three sisters. Her father was of Dutch and English descent and worked as a mechanical engineer and her mother was of German descent and worked for the NJ Department of Higher Education. Her father taught Lisa and one of her sisters how to play ukulele and as children they loved making music, their father accompanying them on his banjo. Her mother suggested that she play the flute and fostered other interests and creative pursuits. Lisa graduated from Princeton High School where she played flute in the band and sang in the choir. She joined an Irish band after college and more recently, in 2015, studied flute with Morgan Russell (https://russellwoodwinds.com). In 1984 she was cast in a musical version of 'A Christmas Carol' called 'Mr. Scrooge', performed in a theater in the round. And from 2014-2016 Lisa studied acting at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington DC.
Always encouraging of artistic pursuits, Lisa's parents gifted her a Minolta camera when she was in sixth grade. Her passion for photography was born. She learned about photography from her father and at a joint art show with friends in 2017, she sold her first (and only) photograph.
Lisa spent much of her career working in science and engineering roles before finding a creative outlet she could translate into a new career. A filmmaking course, taught by film makers at Stillmotion (https://www.stillmotion.ca), further encouraged Lisa's art behind the camera as she stepped into the world of storytelling. Her first film was a short documentary titled Virginia is for Lovers of Photography. MOM's: More Than an Organic Market is Lisa's second film and first feature length film for which she received an official selection from the 2020 Richmond International Film Festival, the 2020 New Haven Documentary Film Festival, and the first round of the 2021 Love Wins Film Competition.
