“Expats,” the immense yet intimate six-part series from director and showrunner Lulu Wang, tells the story of three American women living in Hong Kong who become inextricably linked by tragedy. That loss, so harrowing it’s often kept vague in plot synopses, is the disappearance of a young boy. Left unattended in a crowded night market for a split second, Gus (Connor James) is just gone. There’s no indication if he’s been taken or he merely wandered off. His mother, Margaret (Nicole Kidman), is inconsolable.

Mercy is one of the female characters in Lulu Wang’s Expats that represents the current generation of young women, who are as clueless about their work and personal lives as Mercy is the youngest of the three women and one of the leads of the show. Her life was a canvas at that juncture, which she could paint the way she wanted. Mercy sadly had not found her calling yet, which is why she was living in Hong Kong doing meager jobs while she held a degree from an Ivy League American university.
Mercy was a Korean American woman who had spent most of her life in America, and she remained clueless about her roots and culture. Mercy had a lot of issues while growing up, and just like Hillary, her relationship with her mother was not very ideal. At many junctures, she had mentioned how complicated her conversations with the mother had become,...

Lulu Wang’s Expats throws light on the people living in Hong Kong and the kind of culture shock they face upon meeting the locals. These expats are Americans and British of various descents who come to live in this megacity of Southeast Asia and try to co-exist in a community that has a different understanding of family and what constitutes it.
Margaret and Clarke, who had been living in Hong Kong for a while, are dealing with a certain tragedy that rocked their world. Margaret and her husband Clarke are rich and live in a posh apartment complex surrounded by people of good financial standing as neighbors who belong to different parts of the world. Unlike others, Margaret and Clarke chose not to deal with the pain the right way. The couple had lost their toddler son, Gus, in a crowded market, and the person responsible for it was...

Lulu Wang’s Expats was a female-centric show that painted a broad picture of the kind of turmoil women go through daily. Hillary was an upstairs neighbor of Margaret. She lived with her husband, David, and many assumed she led a rich and peaceful life. On the outside, her marriage was glossy like a magazine cover, while on the inside, all the pages of her life were crumbling. The series began with Hillary being in denial about her marriage, and pretending everything was smooth sailing. This was probably the result of years of conditioning by her family to make the marriage work. David could not keep up with the façade of their marriage and walked out.
Hillary worked as a corporate executive in Hong Kong, away from her family in Los Angeles. Her marriage began to show cracks when David suddenly wanted to have kids. Hillary married him because both did not want children.

Expats episode 5 was the longest in the show and intricately covered the lives of the maids who worked with Hillary and Margaret. Mercy and Charly had a good time with each other. She revealed to Charly the incident regarding Gus. David revealed Mercy’s pregnancy to Hillary, and she was livid about it. Alan, the priest whom Clarke frequented, visited him to discuss his state of mind. Margaret, after having a tense standoff with her children, finally decided to move to America and asked Essie if she could join them as well.

Why Did Hillary Travel To Los Angeles?
Hillary headed to Los Angeles to meet her ailing father, and her mother was happy to have her daughter back. Hillary was probably not sure how long he would be alive, and since her marital status was of least to her, making the trip back home was an easy choice.

Episode one of Expats, the brand-new show on Amazon Prime, is about Margaret trying to get over a tragedy in the city of Hong Kong. Amidst the chaotic times Margaret and her family are going through, she was throwing a 50th birthday party for her husband, Clarke. The party was a disaster, as Margaret had a meltdown over spotting Mercy waitressing at it. Margaret and Hillary, who had not been on good terms since the incident, were back to being friends for a brief period but went back to their lives. The show was like Anurag Kashyap’s film Ugly, but Expats so far is more emotional than dark.

Expats, the brand-new Amazon Prime Show created by Lulu Wang, chronicles the story of expatriates living in the megacity of Hong Kong. The show specifically covers the story of rich expats who live a luxurious life and are surrounded by people who are as wealthy as they are. The hustle and bustle of the city is portrayed in a rather claustrophobic way, but it depicts the noise and loneliness aptly. The show is the story of Margaret, a housewife living with her two kids and her husband Clarke in the city. A tragedy occurred that changed the trajectory of her life. The show has the elements of melancholy found in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation, and the first two episodes have a rather sober approach to her life after ‘the incident.’

Universal International Studios is fast getting back into business following the end of the U.S. labor action, its bosses say.
In a keynote interview at Content London yesterday afternoon, Uis President Beatrice Springborn told delegates that productions such as Apples Never Fall and Day of the Jackal are back up and running, while new packages such as the buzzy Cape Fear TV reboot at Uis sister UCP are attracting offers.
This is despite the broadly downbeat perceptions around the entertainment market following a devastating 2023 that was punctuated by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the ongoing ad market downturn and a streamer business model reset.
Deadline revealed the noise around Cape Fear earlier this month. The Nick Antosca, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese project has been subject to the first big bidding war over a TV pitch after the double Hollywood strikes, according to sources, and has provided...

Comedian Roseanne Barr addressed the audience at Donald Trump’s rally in Hialeah, Florida, on Wednesday night.
Barr recalled her failed attempt at running for president in 2012 against former President Barack Obama.
“So I ran in 2012 because I wanted to run against him and I ran because I said, ‘This is the time for a woman to win!'” the actress said.
“Me, not Hillary,” she clarified, referencing Hillary Clinton’s presidential run against Trump in 2016. “Because this is the time for a woman, because anything a man can do, a woman can get another man to do even better!”
Barr proceeded to show off a custom-made jacket that read “Magador-in-chief” and featured a graphic of Trump wrangling a bull.
“Trump is the MAGAdor! Yeah, and that’s that deep-state bull!” she exclaimed.
“Aren’t we all tired of the deep-state bull-—? I can’t hear you. I want you to say it louder.

A Saturday Night Live “Wayne’s World” sketch may have set the boundaries for how comedians handled the president’s children on the show. After apparently making fun of President Bill Clinton’s daughter Chelsea, Mike Myers ultimately apologized for the joke.
Myers penned an apology letter and SNL creator and producer Lorne Michaels also apologized. “We felt, upon reflection, that if it was in any way hurtful, it wasn’t worth it,” Michaels said. “She’s a kid, a kid who didn’t choose to be in public life.”
So what did Myers and sidekick Dana Carvey say about 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton?

Elliot Page conquered a new challenge for his first movie role in six years. In “Close to You,” an observant drama that premieres on Sunday at the Toronto Film Festival, there’s basically no written dialogue in the script, so everything that you hear in the movie was improvised by the actors on the day of shooting.
“I’ve never done anything like this before,” Page told Variety in a recent Zoom interview prior to the film’s premiere. “I found it incredibly intimidating.”
In “Close to You,” Page’s character Sam hasn’t visited his family since his transition four years ago. The group discussed how political figures, like Hilary and Sarah Palin, presented the show an opportunity to include women in sketches.
Spade then jogged Sweeney’s memory, recounting that she once played Chelsea, who was 13 years old at the time, stressing that her portrayal “rubbed somebody wrong.”

Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Julia Sweeney revealed on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s “Fly on the Wall” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) that Hillary Clinton was so upset over the show’s portrayal of her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, that she personally “wrote a letter” to showrunner Lorne Michaels. Sweeney played a teenage Chelsea in a January 1993 episode, with Phil Hartman and Jan Hooks playing Bill and Hillary, respectively (see photo above).
“People were saying how unattractively I was playing Chelsea, and all I did was not wear makeup and put braces on,” Sweeney said. “If you say that, you’re saying I’m unattractive!”
Sweeney maintained that she “wasn’t trying to play [Chelsea] unattractive,” but that doesn’t mean targeting someone’s child on national television was a smart idea. Clinton’s letter expressed her disapproval over the sketch, the cast member said. Variety has reached out to Clinton’s representative for comment.

On Wednesday’s episode of Saturday Night Live alums Dana Carvey and David Spade’s “Fly on the Wall” podcast, it was revealed that Hillary Clinton was upset with Julia Sweeney’s SNL impression of a teenaged Chelsea Clinton.
The former Secretary of State “wrote a letter” to SNL creator Lorne Michaels about the sketch, which aired on the show in 1993.
Sweeney brought up the letter while talking on the podcast about the lack of female representation on SNL during the early 1990s. Sweeney claimed it was rare to have sketches that featured predominantly female cast members. That’s even though likely public targets like the Clintons were in the news.
Spade noted that Sweeney had once portrayed Chelsea Clinton and that it “rubbed somebody wrong.”
The Clintons were notoriously protective of Chelsea during their time in the White House.

For its milestone 20th season, “Top Chef” headed across the pond to London, the first time an entire season of Bravo’s culinary competition show was set overseas. In addition to highlighting talented chefs, the show also showcases the cultural and historical sites of its host cities, of which there was no shortage in London.
“From very early on, we talked about the location for that first intro being the Tower of London and us wanting to make this feel as big as it possibly could,” director Ariel Boles said of the season opener, which introduced the 16 “World All-Stars” and saw them meet host Padma Lakshmi in a nearby park. “Seeing all of these chefs from around the world for the first time in this iconic place and being able...

Eric Trump was mocked on social media after he made hypocritical claims during an interview with Fox News.
“It’s sad,” he said. “We’re no better than some of these Third World countries around the world. We are literally trying to imprison political opponents. We’re better than this.”
He additionally claimed that the Department of Justice wants to imprison his father for “political speech” over the statements Donald Trump made before the January 6 riot.
Eric Trump was referring to his father’s recent indictments – but was incorrect in his statements. He was attempting to defend his father’s legal problems but forgot to mention his own Donald Trump’s past actions.
The former president is facing multiple charges related to money he paid to porn star Stormy Daniels, mishandling classified documents and conspiring to overturn the 2020 election.

Roy Wood Jr. took on Trump his first night on the job as Daily Show guest host. The comedian gave viewers a handy update on the ex-president as he braces for his arrest on Tuesday and becomes the first former Potus to be criminally charged.
“You know Trump gotta be mad,” said the comedian Monday night. “He paid all that hush money, didn’t nobody hush. It’s messed up. It’s in the word: Hush. Shh! But no affair — no affair — has been less hushed than this one. Everybody know about this damn affair.

Howard Stern went after one-time friend Donald Trump last week, saying the president “despises” his supporters. This week, it’s Donald Trump Jr.
Trump Jr. had taken a shot at Stern shortly after the SiriusXM host’s comments about the president last week. On his show Tuesday, Stern fired back.
“I can’t argue with him, that kid is such a success,” Stern joked. “He is such a wit. He is such a genius. He would have made a fortune if he wasn’t under his father’s thumb. Game over. You can’t argue with a genius like that.”
That was in response to Trump Jr.’s comments on Thursday.
“It’s sort of disappointing,” Trump Jr. said about Stern on SiriusXM’s Jim & Sam Show. “I mean, I would think at least the sort of original Howard, I imagine most of those blue-collar people that he now hates...

The idea behind the Local Voices ad campaign is to capture the concerns that everyday Americans have about presidential hopeful Donald Trump in unscripted, personal commentaries that later air as one-minute ads in the same swing state communities where they were filmed. The key is to find voices who belong to community leaders who aren’t normal Hillary Clinton supporters, may they be conservatives or generally apolitical figures.

In swing states where the voters have been confronted with constant barrage of political ads, the other key ingredient is authenticity, so they are not dismissed as just another manufactured political message.
To accomplish this, founder Lee Hirsch (“Bully”) turned to fellow documentary filmmakers and recruited some of the top filmmakers working in nonfiction, including Amir Bar-Lev, Amy Berg (“West of Memphis”), Marshall Curry, Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady...
