It’s been one year since Columbia Pictures / Screen Gems brought The Pope’s Exorcist (read our review Here), a supernatural thriller starring Russell Crowe, to theatres. Just two weeks after the film was released, our friends at Bloody Disgusting heard that a sequel was in development… but then things went quiet for a while. Crowe recently said that The Pope’s Exorcist was meant to kick off a trilogy, but the franchise’s progress had been slowed down by “a change of studio heads.” Things have apparently been worked out, though, because producer Jeff Katz of Worldwide Katz has just taken to social media to announce that the Pope’s Exorcist sequel has been given the greenlight!
Katz wrote, “Amorth Nation — I just got the call. It’S Officially Happening!!! “È un seguito, amici miei.”* Thank you to the amazing #ThePopesExorcist fans. You made this happen. Gas up your Lambretta – and get ready to ride.

Apple TV+ has debuted a set of first-look images from filmmaker Doug Liman’s ‘The Instigators’.
Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck) are reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to pull off a robbery of the ill-gained earnings of a corrupt politician. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police but also backwards bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture—or worse.
Directed by Doug Liman and written by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck, the movie also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Toby Jones, with Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman.

Matt Damon would somewhat reunite with his Good Will Hunting and Ocean’s series co-star Casey Affleck in Oppenheimer. However, they would not share a scene together in Christopher Nolan’s historical epic. The two are set to star in an action-comedy-heist movie that brings them back to their native Boston in The Instigators. The heist film is co-written by Affleck, but will be directed by the Road House remake‘s Doug Liman. Affleck says, “The inspiration for this was definitely Midnight Run and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” He also stated that he’s always “wanted to do a buddy action comedy.”
Entertainment Weekly has the first look at The Instigators, which features images with the co-leads and their co-star Hong Chau, who recently worked with Damon in the critically and audience-panned Downsizing. It’s been almost exactly one year since Columbia Pictures / Screen Gems brought The Pope’s Exorcist (read our review Here), a supernatural thriller starring Russell Crowe, to theatres. Just two weeks after the film was released, our friends at Bloody Disgusting heard that a sequel was in development… but everything has been quiet since then. During a recent interview with The Six O’Clock Show, Crowe confirmed that a sequel is in development – and that The Pope’s Exorcist was actually meant to be chapter one in a trilogy!
As it turns out, things have been quiet on the Pope’s Exorcist front because there was a behind-the-scenes shake-up with the studio executives, but it sounds like Crowe still has hopes that the trilogy is going to happen. He told The Six O’Clock Show (with thanks to MovieWeb for the transcription), “(A sequel) is in discussion at the moment. The...

Brought to the big screen by Sony earlier this year, The Pope’s Exorcist was quietly a box office hit back in April, scaring up $76 million worldwide on a production budget of just $18 million. We’ve heard that a sequel is already in early development, and Sony is surely thrilled to hear that the Russell Crowe film is finding even more of an audience over on Netflix.
The Pope’s Exorcist hit Netflix on August 16 and it’s currently the #1 most popular movie on the streaming service, beating out films including brand new Netflix Originals like The Monkey King and Heart of Stone. It didn’t take long for the film to shoot to the top of Netflix’s charts, no doubt aided by its profile being raised by the theatrical release earlier this year.

On Tuesday morning, Paul Walter Hauser is driving to Starbucks, “keeping it real” he says, in the wake of his brand new Emmy nomination for the role of serial killer Larry Hall in Apple TV+ limited series Black Bird, which already garnered Critics Choice and SAG Awards. It’s been “a very, very fun morning,” and there’s “a crazy amount to celebrate.”
It’s also a big day for SAG-AFTRA talks, and the threat of an actors’ strike looms. It can be tricky for actors to make public statements at this stage, not knowing what’s coming. But Hauser is not one for backing away from difficulty, as evidenced by his heavy-duty Black Bird role.
“I’m not going to be a coward and not say anything,” he says. “I guess what I would say is this: I love our studios and our streamers, and they have been tastemakers...

Made on a budget of $18 million, the supernatural thriller The Pope’s Exorcist (read our review Here), which stars Russell Crowe as real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth, has racked up over $52 million at the global box office since its release earlier this month. Academy Award winner Russell Crowe plays real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist, the brand new horror movie from director Julius Avery (Overlord). The Screen Gems horror movie has thus far scared up $52 million worldwide, and Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report that a sequel to The Pope’s Exorcist is now in early development.
Bloody Disgusting’s sources indicate that development is underway on The Pope’s Exorcist 2, but we don’t have any further details at this time. We do expect Crowe to return.
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
The smart thing about The Pope’s Exorcist is that the production budget was quite low, reportedly just $18 million. This set the horror movie up for success, allowing it to become profitable in theaters after just one week of release. The same can’t be said about Universal’s Renfield, which reportedly cost $65 million and has thus far made just $17.9 million.

Having seen big success with Apple TV+ and crime series Black Bird, Paul Walter Hauser is back working with the company — but while crime is still on his mind, it's a movie this time. He's joining the cast of Doug Liman's The Instigators, which already boasts Matt Damon, Casey Affleck and Hong Chau.
According to Deadline, the film follows two thieves who must go on the run with the help of one of their therapists after a robbery goes awry.
Affleck wrote the script with Chuck MacLean after he developed it with developed by producers Jeff Robinov and John Graham.

So it’s not surprising to hear (from our friends at Bloody Disgusting) that Ineson has been hired to provide the voice of a demon for the supernatural thriller The Pope’s Exorcist, starring Russell Crowe.

Penske Media Corp. has acquired Atx TV, the entity that operates the annual television festival in Austin, Tex.
The deal calls for Pmc, which is the parent company of Variety, to help expand the scope of the Atx brand with programming and activities beyond the four-day event in June that has become a key stop on the industry’s promotional calendar.
The Atx TV festival is heading into its 12th edition next year, set to run June 1-4. The company was founded by TV enthusiasts Emily Gipson and Caitlin McFarland, who put themselves on the map in a short time by smartly programming a mix of nostalgic reunions, lively table reads plus a mix of buzzy premieres and industry-centric panels. Atx has become a high-visibility event for TV promotional events, but it’s still managed to maintain a low-key atmosphere for creative talent that appeals to Hollywood insiders. In 2017, Gipson...

We offer our sincerest thanks to everyone.”
