“Slumberland,” the latest big-budget adventure film from Netflix, is something like an “Inception” for kids, featuring a precocious young girl, a cute stuffed pig, and a towering, stinky sidekick. Written by David Guion and Michael Handelman, “Slumberland” has some snazzy fun with the concept of how dreams take us to similar experiences—about forgetting to wear pants, driving a runaway truck, or endless staircases.

‘Slumberland’ Review: ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Meets ‘Inception’ in This Sleepy Netflix Adventure Movie
I’m going to let you in on a little secret of the trade: Film critics actually want to love everything they watch. The odds may not always be in our favor, and certain assignments inspire lower expectations than others, but nobody shows up for work hoping to be miserable that day — least of all when they’re lucky enough to work a job that offers an occasional measure of outright transcendence.
Which is all to say that, one of these days, I would be absolutely overjoyed to rave about one of the glossy, star-studded, and/or special effects-driven original movies that Netflix releases onto its platform without any marketing or festival play whatsoever as part of the streamer’s pact with the dark lord Satan to flood the zone with cinema-flavored content (last summer’s “Hustle” is almost strong enough to feel like the exception that proves the rule...

Somewhere between “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Little Prince” in style and sensibility, Winsor McCay’s weekly funny-pages serial “Little Nemo in Slumberland” more than deserves a proper big-screen adaptation. Not that people haven’t attempted it over the years. And not that “Constantine” director Francis Lawrence’s ugly and all-around off-putting kiddie movie counts — or even has much of anything to do with McCay’s ultra-imaginative turn-of-the-20th-century comic strip.
Yes, the main character is named Nemo, and yes, most of the film takes place in the fantastical subconscious realm of Slumberland, where gravity and time play by altogether unpredictable rules. But that’s about as far as the similarities go — which might explain why Netflix hasn’t bothered to underline the connection in its marketing campaign. “Slumberland” feels less like an adaptation of “Little Nemo” than another big, unwieldy modern visual effects movie loosely “inspired by” an earlier piece of name-brand IP.

Get ready to enter the World of Dreams. During Netflix's Tudum fan event, which is a smorgasbord of updates for all the things the streamer has on its docket, Jason Momoa introduced a sneak peak clip of the upcoming film "Slumberland." Based on the the acclaimed comic strip "Little Nemo In Slumberland" by Winsor McCay, Momoa portrays the eccentric outlaw Flip. Horns, height, and all!
The sneak peak clip focuses on Marlow Barkley's Nemo and Momoa's Flip as they are about to transition from the Waking World to the Dream World. Serving as an introduction for both Nemo and the audience, Flip breaks down the rules of travel between the realms. In the process, we also see how the world transforms around them. Glittery and gold, the realm (and Flip) go from drab to fab. Try not to be distracted, though. Pay attention to those rules.

(Welcome to ...And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)
It seems like Jason Momoa has grown weary of spending all his free time under the sea as Aquaman, because he's decided to embody a new mythological creature with a look that I promise you could never anticipate. Momoa is set to become a nine-foot-tall half-man, half-beast creature with shaggy fur and long tusks. What kind of horrifying tale could require such a monster, you ask? Just the story of Little Nemo — not the fish, but an adorable little girl who embarks on a fantastical journey through dreams to find her father. All of this takes place in Netflix's upcoming film "Slumberland," and if it sounds familiar, then you might be recalling the Winsor McCay comic strip that inspired the movie's story.

“Shazam” headliner Zachary Levi is attached to star in the live-action “Harold and the Purple Crayon” at Sony Pictures, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Screenwriters David Guion and Michael Handelman are writing the screenplay, based on Crockett Johnson’s best-selling children’s book.
“Harold and the Purple Crayon” is Johnson’s most popular book and centers on Harold, a curious four-year-old boy who, with his purple crayon, has the power to create a world of his own simply by drawing it. Six other books soon followed, and inspired many adaptations.
John Davis is producing “Harold and the Purple Crayon” through his Davis Entertainment banner. Davis’ last comedy, “Dolemite Is My Name,” won Best Comedy this past year at the Critics’ Choice Awards and was Golden Globe nominated for Best Picture for a Musical or Comedy.

Through the past 47 years on television, Sesame Street has been one of our most enduring cultural touchstones, as generations of children have learned letters, numbers, sharing, and cooperation at the feet of Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Elmo. So a leap to the big screen is such a natural idea, it’s surprising it’s only happened twice, with 1985’s Follow That Bird, and 1999’s The Adventures Of Elmo In Grouchland.
But keeping to Sesame Workshop’s roughly-every-15-years schedule, a return to the big screen is in the works. Deadline reports that Warner Bros., whose sister company HBO now airs Sesame Street before passing episodes to PBS for a second run, has hired David Guion and Michael Handelman, the screenwriting duo behind Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb, Dinner For Schmucks, and the Zach Braff vehicle The Ex.

Warner Bros. has started developing a new Sesame Street movie with Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy, and they've hired David Guion and Michael Handelman to write the script. The two writers have previously worked on films such as the adventure comedy Night at The Museum: Secret of the Tomb and the Steve Carrell comedy Dinner for Schmucks.
According to Deadline, the writers will "start with a treatment as the studio finds a handle for a narrative family film based on the 47-year-old show that has been redone by WB’s sister company, HBO."
So, they aren't sure what exactly this Sesame Street movie will be yet, but I'm sure they'll figure out something good that respects what the series is. I'm curious to see what they end up coming up with. Sesame Street is one of the most beloved children shows ever, and the characters in it are iconic. This...

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb
Written by David Guion and Michael Handelman
Directed by Shawn Levy
USA/UK, 2014
Getting the band back together for one final gig is almost never a good idea. In the case of Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, however, there’s enough ingenuity and fun to justify the encore. Director Shawn Levy adds a few clever wrinkles and plenty of familiar callbacks as he sends his family franchise out with pomp and poignancy. The untimely death of Robin Williams also adds resonance to the film’s melancholy message that letting go is a necessary, painful fact of life.
It’s easy for critics to dismiss films like Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (Sott). When you’re three films into a franchise that’s fueled by a wafer-thin premise, you can feel bored and dissatisfied before the movie even begins.

The third Night At The Museum installment hits theaters this weekend with one of Robin Williams‘ last performances, plus amusing turns by several series regulars, as I say in my video review above. The cast is led by Ben Stiller as the nightwatchman dealing with lively exhibits at the museum, played by Owen Wilson, Ricky Gervais, Steve Coogan, Rebel Wilson and Ben Kingsley with a terrific performance by Downton Abbey alumnus Dan Stevens as a gung-ho knight.
Veteran comedy helmer Shawn Levy directed from a script written by David Guion and Michael Handelman, from a story by the pair and Mark Friedman. Producers are Levy and Chris Columbus. Fox is handling distribution.
Are you going to see the film? Watch my review and let us know.

Will Ferrell is set to tackle William Shakespeare in a new comedy that is currently being developed at Sony. The currently untitled film follows the story of a Shakespearean theater company who are all hell-bent on doing The Bard justice. Information regarding the comedy is currently still at a minimum, and Variety reports that the screenplay for the film is still in its early stages too, with David Guion and Michael Handelman hired to write it. Unfortunately, the screenwriting pair haven.t really delivered anything of note that will make you think that Will Ferrell.s upcoming Shakespearean salvo will actually be worthwhile. David Guion and Michael Handelman.s previous credits have included Dinner For Schmucks and The Ex, both of which possessed almost zero laughs and were also instantly forgettable. Another reason to be a tad alarmed about the development of this new project is that both of the...

If you were betting that someday Will Ferrell would do Shakespeare, you can cash in now.
Variety reported on Tuesday that Sony has picked up a currently untitled comedy starring Ferrell that centers around the intense, competitive world inside a Shakespearean theater company. The screenplay will be written by David Guion and Michael Handelman (Dinner for Schmucks).
This adds to a busy slate for Ferrell as the actor will be appearing in a host of films in the coming years. He is currently set up for next year’s comedy Get Hard, with Kevin Hart and Daddy’s Home with Mark Wahlberg. He also is attached to appear in James Franco’s Zeroville and the sequel to Zoolander that Ben Stiller is attached to direct.
The actor has had a quiet year so far in 2014 with his only prominent role coming in The Lego Movie as Lord Business.

The project is a currently untitled comedy that takes place in the intense, competitive world of a Shakespearean theater company. More below! Could we be looking at another Talladega Nights or Blades of Glory? This certainly feels like it would be a comedy in that same vein. It looks like Will Ferrell will be trying his hand at 16th-century humor. Variety reports that Sony has bagged a comedy pitch about the "intense, competitive world inside a Shakespearean theater company," with Ferrell in mind to star. David Guion and Michael Handelman — a pair that has found success on such scripts as Dinner for Schmucks — will pen the as-of-now-unnamed project. Production schedule, cast, and most other details about the film are also under wraps at the moment. Ferrell will next come to theaters as James King (a white-collar guy with deep pockets who gets cuffed for embezzlement) in the Kevin Hart co-starrer Get Hard and as Mugatu in Zoolander 2, among other roles. A Shakespearean theater company sounds like golden territory for Ferrell and his comic personae — especially anything involving a Mr. G–from–Summer Heights High–esque character.

Though five years have passed since the second Night at the Museum opened, 20th Century Fox is still convinced that fans of the first two films in their family-friendly adventure series will turn out in droves for a third installment, and so the studio is busily working away on Night at the Museum 3. The Shawn Levy-directed threequel, set for release this Christmas, has been quickly assembling a main cast over the past few months. Now, Deadline has news that the film has landed venerated British thesp Ben Kingsley for the main villainous role.
