Mike Pinder, who co-founded the Moody Blues and played keyboards and mellotron and sang on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group’s first nine albums, died Wednesday at his home in Northern California. He was 82 and was the last surviving founding member of the legendary British band.
His longtime bandmate John Lodge announced the news on social media via Pinder’s family. “He passed peacefully [and] his final days were filled with music, encircled by the love of his family,” his Facebook post said. “Michael lived his life with a childlike wonder, walking a deeply introspective path which fused the mind and the heart.”
Pinder’s death follows that of fellow Moodys co-founding guitarist Denny Laine in December and drummer Graeme Edge in 2021. Ray Thomas died in 2002 and Clint Warwick in 2004. Lodge and lead singer Justin Heyward joined in 1966.

Following its premiere at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival last year, “Femme” is finally set for theatrical release in the United States on March 22 in New York and March 29 in Los Angeles. The British thriller from Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping is adapted from their 2021 BAFTA-nominated short and stars Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and George MacKay. Utopia has acquired stateside distribution rights.
“Femme” follows Jules (Stewart-Jarrett), who is targeted in a horrific homophobic attack, destroying his life and career. Some time after that event he encounters Preston (MacKay), one of his attackers, in a gay sauna. He wants revenge.
With a critics consensus that reads, “Sexually charged and riddled with tension, Femme redresses the noir genre and may leave audiences biting their nails to the nub,” the movie holds fresh at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Read our full review round-up below.

Once set up at the Max streaming service, the TV series Dead Boy Detectives, which is based on characters Neil Gaiman created for DC Comics in the pages of The Sandman issue #25, is now calling Netflix its home, having moved away from Max last year because it “doesn’t fit with DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the Dcu.” Today, Variety was able to confirm that Netflix has set an April 25th premiere date for the show.
Since these characters were introduced in the comic book The Sandman, it seems fitting that they ended up on Netflix, as the streamer is also home to the live-action The Sandman series.
George Rexstrew, making his screen debut, and Jayden Revri of The Lodge play the title characters in Dead Boy Detectives. The third lead of the show will be Kassius Nelson of Last Night in Soho. The eight...

Prime Video‘s Reacher is expanding its cast for its upcoming third season as Anthony Michael Hall (The Goldbergs) and Sonya Cassidy (Lodge 49) have joined the action-drama as series regulars. As reported by Variety, Hall is set to play Zachary Beck, a formidable and successful businessman who is also a widow and single father of a 20-year-old son, Richard. He is the owner of a rug import company that Reacher and his associates believe is a cover-up for a more nefarious operation. Cassidy, meanwhile, will portray Susan Duffy, an extremely intelligent and tough DEA agent from Boston with a sharp and sarcastic sense of humor. Reacher‘s third season is currently in production and is based on the seventh book (Persuader) in Lee Child’s best-selling Jack Reacher series. In the novel, Reacher works with the DEA to bring down Beck, whom he suspects of drug smuggling, and attempts to retrieve an undercover agent.

Relocated to north India in 1964, the comic-book class struggle here comes complete with romance and brilliant choreography
One could be cynical and see this transposition of the Riverdale narrative universe into an Indian setting as just another exercise in brand colonialism, pasteurising youth culture one country at a time with deadly doses of emulsifying intellectual property. Or one could just chillax and dance along to the formidably catchy songs, performed with zip by the peppy and exceedingly well choreographed cast. While one is grooving along, it’s worth noting that every so often the film-makers have smuggled in a quietly subversive thought, such as in the song Everything Is Politics which argues, pace Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser, that there is no position outside the ideological apparatus. It’s that very dualism which makes this goofy musical fascinating, a guilt-free pleasure that’s nevertheless super-corny and ridiculous.

The Zurich Film Festival, which runs Sept. 28 – Oct. 8, will honor the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen with its Golden Eye award in recognition of his “successful career and versatility,” the Swiss event said Monday.
Mikkelsen will accept the award on Oct. 6, and will present his latest film, “The Promised Land,” which had its world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival this month. Nikolaj Arcel’s film was described by Variety critic Guy Lodge as a “lavishly upholstered historical romp,” and “a Danish Western, built on black-and-white moral binaries and a yee-haw sense of intrepid adventure.”
Lodge wrote: “Notionally rooted in historical fact, but embellished with storybook romance and flouncing cartoon villainy, this roundly enjoyable Venice competition entry finally owes all its residual gravitas (and at least half its considerable handsomeness) to the expressive woodcut visage of one Mads Mikkelsen.”
Mikkelsen will also take part in a Zff Masters discussion at the Zurich Film Festival,...

It's never a dull moment whenever Hiram Lodge returns to Riverdale. We can always guarantee he's lying or being underhanded about something.
In this case, Hollywood's big TV star is in major hot water on Riverdale Season 7 Episode 13.
Plenty of accusations and heartbreak marked his big return to the world of Riverdale. A somber chapter that exposed the ugliness of the town and the time period.
"Chapter One Thirty: The Crucible" left us feeling grim and sad in this thought-provoking chapter. With a story focused on paranoia, betrayals, and accusations, Riverdale once again showed how ugly Riverdale 1955 could be.
For much of Riverdale Season 7, the style played more on the sweet and sugary feeling of the 1950s, even through the murders. But the darker reality of the decade is the juicier draw that feels more like the show we love.
Like for instance, the terrible accusations made against Mrs. Thornton.

Film Movement has acquired North American rights to Spanish writer-director Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren’s “20,000 Species of Bees,” a tender drama about growing up trans that recently won a Berlin Film Festival Silver Bear.
The New York-based distributor is planning to roll out this topical title — in which the child protagonist explores her gender identity — in U.S. theaters in late 2023, followed by a wide release on all leading home entertainment and digital platforms.
The announcement was made by Film Movement president Michael Rosenberg and Jennyfer Gautier, the head of international sales of Paris-based distributor Luxbox.
In the Spanish-language drama, 8-year-old Aitor, who is nicknamed Cocó, travels with her mother Ane and two older siblings to visit their grandmother in a sleepy village in the Basque Country. It’s here, amongst beehives, that Aitor explores her identity alongside the women of her family who, at her request, start to refer to her with male pronouns.

The Dead Boy Detectives have a new home: The forthcoming DC drama, from prolific executive producer Greg Berlanti, is moving to Netflix from HBO Max, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

DC’s Dead Boy Detectives will do its snooping on a different streamer. Reports indicate the drama is moving from HBO Max, where the show was developed, to Netflix. Sources say the show is changing venues because it doesn’t fit with DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the Dcu. The duo is retooling the DC’s representation across film, television, and video games, ensuring all the pieces fit together to create a cohesive universe of content. The duo’s plans include five inter-connected shows and Peacemaker on HBO Max. At the very least, Dead Boy Detectives is moving to another platform instead of being canceled.
The Dead Boys Detectives series revolves around Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, two dead British teenagers, and their alive friend, Crystal Palace. A press release from HBO Max described it as “a lot like a vintage detective series — only darker and on acid.

The “Everything Everywhere All at Once” fandom has gone too far.

The first reviews are in for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” and by all indications, the stop-motion animation is a resounding success. Fifteen years in the making, the film co-directed by del Toro and Mark Gustafson boasts an all-star cast of voice talent, including Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton. However, overwhelming praise for the latest take on Carlo Collodi’s classic tale centered on its visual and thematic approach.
Set in 1930s fascist Italy, “Pinocchio” separates itself from the rest as a “family movie” that “does not shy away from dark themes of death and war,” per Insider. Its critic Ayomikun Adekaiyero wrote that the adaptation “justifies its existence by modernizing the tale with beautiful stop-motion animation and a tear-jerking story.” On the flip side, Adekaiyero was “disappointed by the mediocrity of the musical elements of the movie,” adding that they were “secondary to the story.

Croatian writer-director Juraj Lerotić’s “Safe Place,” an emotional story of a family reeling in the wake of a suicide attempt, took the top prize at the Sarajevo Film Festival, which wrapped a record-setting 2022 edition in the Bosnian capital on Friday night.
The Heart of Sarajevo Award for best feature film was given by a jury headed by Austrian filmmaker Sebastian Meise (“The Great Freedom”), which included French filmmaker Lucile Hadžihalilović (“Earwig”), Croatian writer-director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović (“Murina”), Serbian actor Milan Marić (“Dovlatov”) and Israeli producer and consultant Katriel Schory.
“Safe Place” plays on Lerotić’s own pained family history, with the Croatian multihyphenate taking on the lead role in his deeply personal story — a performance that also earned him the award for best actor in Sarajevo.
