The year ahead: showbiz

6 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Will Brad and Jen get back together? Where will Sting's private jet take him in his quest to save the planet?

The difficulty in predicting what will happen in the glamorous world of showbiz in the coming year is that the glamorous world of showbiz tends to exceed even the most outlandish of predictions. Why, in just the last two months, Lindsay Lohan has become a fashion designer, fought with her ex-girlfriend, made up with her ex-girlfriend, had a one night stand with an actor who emerged sheepishly from his house carrying a Muppet (no word as yet if the Muppet was involved), went to India to save the poor people and launched a website selling her own clothes. Remember the days when she had barely shot Freaky Friday in that time?

But it's not impossible to foresee what is to come. First, by this time next year, there will be an extraordinarily, »

X Factors Joe McElderry: Simon Cowells scary!

8 hours ago | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Joe McElderry has confessed that he is still scared of Simon Cowell. The X Factor winner said: 'I used to be hardly able to look him in the eye! I'm getting a bit better, but he's still a bit scary – it's like he's got this aura around him, like, 'I am Simon Cowell.’' He added: 'It's weird because when I auditioned, although I knew he's the one I had to impress, I thought he'd be the one I'd be least star-struck by… but it was the total opposite – he'd walk down the corridor and say hello and I'd be shy, but now I can have a conversation, sort of.' The 18-year-old also revealed how he »

Kaleidoscope 2009: Important TV Events (Part 3/4)

20 hours ago | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

People working in the TV world celebrated the arrival of the third quarter of 2009 when the biggest television event, the Emmys, was held in September. Preceded by Creative Emmy Awards, the event was, for some, the eventual payday of their hard work throughout the last year. Also coming into the spotlight is a major change in a very popular show that sent a shock to its fans in the month of August.

July

Deemed as one of the most dramatic endings of "The Bachelorette" season, the Jillian Harris edition resulted in a proposition on July 27. Jillian picked Ed Swiderski out of Kiptyn Locke although Ed was the guy who left the competition in the fifth week to pursue his career. Ed in return, presented her with and ring and said, "I want to be with you forever. I want a family with you." The couple moved in together around two months after the finale. »

'American Idol': Jason Castro's car chase, via Twitter

29 December 2009 2:23 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

If you aren't following "American Idol" finalist Jason Castro on Twitter, you really should.

Over the last two days, Jason Castro has had quite the adventure. He was in a car accident where the person who hit him wouldn't stop, so (naturally) Castro chased the person down... to a trailer park. His Twitter tells the whole story.

tonight i got rear ended and the person didn't stop so i chased him and wound up trapping him in a trailer park. crazy annoying.

he lost me in the trailer park. it was a green 90s chevy truck single cab short bed with ground effects. he must live in the neighborhood bc

there's only one way out of that neighborhood and cops came after me and monitored the exit. so annoying. my little hybrid was too slow!

tonight was kind of fun though... haha you should've been there!

for the record i did call the cops. »

'American Idol': Constantine Maroulis voted 'star of the year' on Broadway

29 December 2009 12:55 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Hugh Jackman? Nope. Angela Lansbury? No. Will Ferrell? Uh-uh.

None of those people were voted "Star of the Year" by readers of Broadway.com. That honor goes to former "American Idol" finalist Constantine Maroulis.

Maroulis was the "overwhelming choice" of more than 25,000 voters in the year-end poll for his Tony-nominated performance in the '80s rock musical "Rock of Ages," the site says. He beat out Jackman and Daniel Craig ("A Steady Rain"), Lansbury ("Blithe Spirit" and "A Little Night Music"), Ferrell ("You're Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush"), Gavin Creel ("Hair"), Alice Ripley ("Next to Normal") and Geoffrey Rush ("Exit the King").

He also got to give an acceptance speech, which comes from a rather unglamorous spot but on the upside doesn't have anyone playing him off the stage after 30 seconds. Here it is.

Simon Cowell gets 500,000 Banksy for Christmas

29 December 2009 10:50 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Christmas came late for Simon Cowell this year, as the music mogul was treated to a £500k post-festive bonus – a personalised Banksy. The one-of-a-kind artwork was commissioned by record company executives at Syco, and depicts Cowell in a reproduction of a Degas masterpiece named Rehearsal Of The Ballet On Stage. A source told a UK newspaper: 'Record label execs wanted something unique to give to Simon. He's a secret art collector and loves the work of Degas – plus he's a huge fan of Banksy. So they got Banksy to mock up one of Degas' most famous works. In the picture, it looks like Simon's deciding whether or not the girl has the X Factor.' The »

Top TV stories of 2009: Paula is out at Idol, and Ellen is in

29 December 2009 10:02 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

2009 was a big year for American Idol. After airing for seven wildly successful seasons with three judges, Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul, producers decided to throw a fourth judge into the mix, bringing songwriter Kara DioGuardi on board for season eight. It was a controversial move, and to the surprise of very few people, it went ... poorly.

The judges, who had spent seven seasons learning the rhythm of the show, were suddenly forced to contend with a fourth voice. As none of these folks were exactly shrinking violets to begin with, this led to a lot of jockeying for the mic, which in turn wasted a lot of time. It wasted so much time, in fact, that critiques would get cut off, the show would run long, and at times, judges wouldn't be allowed to speak at all.

So at the end of this harried season, it was »

That smell in the air is nostalgia from the past year, and it's time to reflect back on what we've seen and learned. The last year of the 2000s began with Kara DioGuardi coming on board and ended with Simon Cowell threatening to leave, and included the new president telling kids they wouldn't be reality stars (outrage!). Suave to the end, Melvyn Bragg takes a final bow - (but not without a few well chosen barbs)

29 December 2009 8:33 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

• Veteran broadcaster ends run with show on RSC

• Highbrow swansong for programme's 31-year stint

Melvyn Bragg's final voice-over on the last regular edition of the South Bank Show after 31 years is cleverly double-edged.

"The brave work is continuing," he notes, "keeping this now well-established British institution full of new life as it moves into the future."

Bragg is speaking about the Royal Shakespeare Company, subject of the final programme three decades after it featured in the second instalment of his arts show, but the note of optimistic defiance could also be taken to refer to another well-established British artistic institution moving on : himself.

Earlier this year, ITV released a carefully-phrased press release announcing that the South Bank Show was ending because of Bragg's retirement.

In fact, it seemed clear at the time – and has become more so since – that the relationship between the events was reversed: Bragg was »

Kanye West Wins Another Award: 'Most Egotistical Male Celeb'

29 December 2009 7:42 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

You know what they say about payback. Well, while Taylor Swift is probably building a new wing on her Nashville mansion to hold all the Entertainer of the Year awards she's been scooping up lately, her one-time tormentor Kanye West has racked up just one ignoble honor in the wake of his infamous Vma stage crash, and it's probably not going to be vying for mantle space anytime soon.

In a recent poll from Parade magazine online, readers voted West (MTV News' #7 Man of the Year) the "Most Egotistical Male Celeb." It's an impressive feat, made even more notable given the competition: Chest hair-flaunting "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell (#2) and wiggy New York real estate mogul Donald Trump (#3). West won out over the two Mount Narcissus icons with 46 percent of the vote. While Trump could only pull 27 percent of the vote and Cowell got an anemic 13 percent, Diddy scored »

Simon Cowell's Christmas art

The artist - who is known for his stencil-style public pieces - superimposed Simon's head on a reproduction of Degas' 1874 creation, Rehearsal Of The Ballet On Stage. Simon Cowell`s Barbados dream stalls

Simon Cowell's luxury piece of paradise under construction in Barbados has ground to a halt. Cowell has forked out £15 million in cash for two shoreline sites on the stunning island and was reportedly hoping to spend this year's holiday break there. But Cowell has repaired to a £625,000-a-week yacht with some of his favourite women, including ex-girlfriends and his mum, to cruise around Barbados, Grenada, Antigua and St Barts. Britain's Daily Mail claims Cowell is miffed over the Black Rock project where he bought the sites. Cowell, who never takes out a mortgage, has seen the finish date for the 12.9-hectare site - comprising luxury villas for the rich and famous and a Four Seasons »
