NBC is set to have the fifth season of “This Is Us” on your TV screens this fall — assuming all goes according to plan and production can resume this summer amid the pandemic, that is — but if you’re one of the many Pearson fans who just can’t wait that long for more of the Big Three, then TheWrap has the perfect walk down memory lane to help get you through.
In the video above, which is exclusive to TheWrap, you’ll find never-before-seen footage of Blake Stadnik recording “Memorized,” the song he performed on the Season 4 premiere last fall, when he was first introduced and revealed to be the adult version of Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby’s (Chris Sullivan) blind son, Jack Damon.

Siddhartha Khosla’s melancholic score has been complementing “This Is Us’” tear-inducing moments for four seasons now, but the composer was very aware from the start not to overdo the emotionality of the music.
“I think Season 1 I did that because I was trying to figure out … when was the right time to come in,” Khosla told Gold Derby during our Meet the Btl Experts: Composers panel (watch above). “At that time, I was just trying to learn the vernacular of the show, try to understand what [creator] Dan Fogelman’s intent was, what the other writers and directors were wanting. It took me about half a season in Season 1 to realize that almost the less I did, the better in some cases. And now in Season 4, I find we’re getting more score-heavy just because … there’s not as much monologues in the show.”

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the “This Is Us” Season 4 finale, Episode 18, “Strangers: Part Two.”]
When Season 4 started, “This Is Us” made a promise. By dedicating its first hour to three new characters — Marine-returned-home Cassidy Sharp (Jennifer Morrison), teen father Malik Hodges (Asante Blackk), and a mysterious blind musician named Jack (Blake Stadnik) — Dan Fogelman’s NBC drama committed to making those characters matter by the end of the year.

Most of their arcs were evident before credits rolled on Episode 1. Sophia Bush and Pamela Adlon will be joining the cast of “This Is Us” for its currently airing fourth season, creator Dan Fogelman told reporters during NBC’s day at the Television Critics Association press tour Saturday.
“Sophia Bush is coming and playing a big secret part in our first episode back [after winter hiatus],” he said. “It’s also been reported a little bit that John Legend has a part in the episode that’s still not disclosed. And then we also have a really cool guest star coming a little bit later in the season, involved in Sterling’s very intense storyline, that I can’t speak about: Pam Adlon.“
Fogelman wouldn’t reveal any details about Adlon’s character, “because it’s a spoiler” for Randall’s [Sterling K. Brown] story throughout the rest of the season. But he did say, “Sterling has an unbelievable arc in the back half of the season,...

As the amount of premium content continues to steadily grow across the small screen, so too does the demand for casting directors to fill new roles with the best performers, be they big names or fresh faces. But because of the high volume of series in production at the same time, tying up actors’ availability, this often requires extra collaboration, especially when casting SAG Award contending ensemble series.
“Casting is like triage. You have so many characters; you’re fielding so many things at the same time,” says veteran casting director Alexa Fogel. She has dedicated herself to the art of ensemble casting from the days of “Oz” and “The Wire” and has more recently been responsible for building the worlds of Netflix’s “Ozark” and “The Politician” and FX’s “Pose.”

Thinking back, we really should’ve figured it out from the start. Though you could barely make out Blake Stadnik‘s face in his inaugural This Is Us scene, he entered the show in a manner similar to the way his on-screen grandfather did in that Terrible Towel moment way back in the series’ premiere: tush first.
“It’s really a full-circle thing,” Stadnik says, laughing as he notes that the clothes-free interlude was the first one he shot. “We were introduced to the first Jack with his butt, and now we’re introduced to the second Jack with his butt.

This Is Us is expanding the Pearson family this season, and it includes the grown-up version of Kate and Toby's son, Jack. During the season four premiere, we meet a struggling blind musician who eventually meets a woman, falls in love, and gets married. However, it isn't until the end of the episode, when all the dots connect, that we learn that the singer is actually an adult Jack Damon, played by newcomer Blake Stadnik. Not only is Stadnik a singer like his character, but he's also legally blind.
So, just how did the show discover Stadnik? According to creator Dan Fogelman, it was a long and tedious process, but once they met Stadnik, they knew they had the right guy. "It was an interesting casting process because we wanted to cast a blind actor," Fogelman explained to Entertainment Tonight. "We had started our casting process very early, even in our off-season.

In a not-so-quiet way this news caught our eye: “Memorized,” the song performed by Kate and Toby’s blind son Jack in a flash-forward at the end of the Season 4 premiere of “This Is Us,” is charting on iTunes.
The track — which is co-written by “This Is Us” composer Siddhartha Khosla and Taylor Goldsmith, the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist from the band Dawes, and sung by blind musical theater actor Blake Stadnik — has entered the Top 20 in the U.S. iTunes sales store and is currently No. 14 on the all-genre song sales chart.

Was the only way to go on Night 2 of the Blind Auditions… down? Season 17 of The Voice started on such a high note Monday that it seemed possible, perhaps even likely. The premiere had been a big enough hoot that neither I nor quite a few of you had really noticed Adam Levine’s absence.
