The Oscars added a category for casting, and it’s about damn time.
The announcement of the new category, slated to debut in 2026 for films released in 2025, has been warmly received on social media by awards aficionados. Many consider it a long-overdue acknowledgment, especially since the Casting Directors Branch was established over a decade ago in 2013. However, this raises questions about future categories and if, when, and how they will be accommodated in an awards ceremony that aims to stay under three hours.
It’s important to note that the Academy has yet to commit to featuring the best achievement in casting award during the televised ceremony. Details regarding eligibility and voting for the inaugural award will be disclosed in April 2025, alongside the complete rules for the 98th Academy Awards. The presentation method will be determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors and its administrative leadership at a later date.

Vertical is shifting the theatrical release of Rebecca Miller’s romantic comedy “She Came to Me” by a week. The film, which stars Peter Dinklage, Anne Hathaway and Marisa Tomei, will open on Oct. 6 instead of Sept. 29, when it was originally slated to premiere. Vertical opted to change its release strategy after Apple decided to move the opening of Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” to later in the month. “She Came to Me” was granted an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, which means that the cast will be able to do promotional activity around its release despite the fact that actors are on strike against major studios and streamers.
“In light of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ release date shift, we jumped at the opportunity for the Oct. 6 date for ‘She Came to Me,'” Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey commented. “It is a competitively less crowded weekend which...

Vertical announced today that they have acquired the US rights to the Peter Dinklage, Anne Hathaway romantic comedy “She Came to Me,” which opened the Berlin Film Festival in February of this year.
“She Came to Me” is written and directed by Rebecca Miller (“Maggie’s Plan”) and, per the official synopsis, “follows Steven Lauddem (Dinklage), a composer who is plagued by a creative block which leaves him unable to finish the score for his big comeback opera. When his former therapist-turned wife Patricia (Hathaway) suggests he rekindle his creativity by getting lost in the city, Steven sets out in search of inspiration. His epiphany comes after he meets a spirited woman named Katrina (Marisa Tomei) and discovers his life has much more potential than he bargained for, or ever could have imagined.”
Vertical has not determined a release date yet, but said the film will be receiving a theatrical release.

The Casting Society of America’s annual Artios Awards, which recognize superior achievement in the casting of film, TV and theater projects, has announced the nominees for its film categories, which range from 200 million blockbusters to low-and-micro budget titles.
Anticipated Oscar darlings such as “Elvis,” “Tar,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans” and “Glass Onion” are present along with juggernauts “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “The Batman.” “Top Gun: Maverick” is strangely absent.

“Steven had said that he wasn’t going to make the film if he couldn’t cast it correctly.”
Thus, explains casting director Cindy Tolan, assembling the perfect ensemble was of existential importance to Spielberg’s revisited “West Side Story.” The goal was to capture all the charisma of the beloved 1961 original, while avoiding its much-criticized, inauthentic approach to ethnicity.
“I looked to my office and I said, ‘We are not going to be the reason this film does not get made.’” An early, viral social media posting kicked off an 18-month worldwide search, involving open calls and appointments from the U.S. to Puerto Rico and Australia.
All told, she claims, “we saw 30,000 humans,” and in no sense did any have to be professionals or even trained. What they had to be was “quadruple threats: They had to sing, dance and act. And the camera had to like them.

Rachel Zegler‘s rise from high school student to “West Side Story” star is well known.
But the film’s casting director Cindy Tolan revealed the search that went into finding Ariana DeBose and David Alvarez as Anita and Bernardo, with DeBose initially declining a chance to audition and Alvarez, who had retired from acting, uncontactable.
Speaking to the press backstage after picking up a BAFTA award for casting for “West Side Story,” Tolan revealed that she was hired a year and a half early to pin down the five leads. “Because essentially, Steven [Spielberg] said, if we can’t find them, then we’re not going to make this movie. And so in the first three weeks of working and searching, we got Rachel Zegler’s tape […] that went that went viral [on social media].”
“You always think it’s going to be Maria, you always think Maria is going to take the longest.

“Dune” was the big winner at the 2022 BAFTAs with five wins in the craft categories. Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” won the coveted best film BAFTA and best director.
However, Campion could not be present at the awards, and her lead Benedict Cumberbatch collected the award on her behalf. Another notable absentee was Will Smith, who won best actor for “King Richard.” Both Campion and Smith were in Los Angeles attending the Critics Choice Awards, where they also won.
The evening was otherwise star-studded, with a full house at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The awards were hosted by Rebel Wilson, who was at her irreverent best. Her targets included the Royal family and 10 Downing Street.
The ongoing war in Ukraine was also acknowledged on at least three occasions during the awards evening. Wilson, while introducing Emilia Jones’ performance of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from “Coda,...

BAFTA award winners Tom Cross and Elliot Graham have decried the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to cut eight different Oscar categories, including film editing, from the live telecast.
Although “No Time to Die” is not nominated for best film editing at the Oscars, the duo said they were unhappy with the Academy’s decision to remove craft categories from its live awards broadcast during the BAFTA winners press conference after picking up their award.
“I’m glad you asked that,” said Cross in response to Variety’s question about the Academy’s decision. “I mean speaking for myself, I’m not a fan. I think it taints the entire proceeding, I think it’s not what the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is about in my opinion. Ariana DeBose just earned her first Oscar nomination for her electrifying performance as Anita in “West Side Story,” Steven Spielberg‘s adaptation of the classic musical. The actress is on the precipice of following in the footsteps of Rita Moreno, who won an Oscar for playing Anita in the 1961 version.
DeBose spoke with Gold Derby editor Christopher Rosen in December about her “West Side Story” origin story, the process of working with Spielberg and her interactions with Moreno, who also has a role in the new version. Watch the exclusive interview above and read the complete transcript below.

In the 1961 film version of “West Side Story,” the “tomboy” character Anybodys is a young teen, a stereotype you’d find on any sitcom of the era, dressed in dungarees and a T-shirt with a cute pixie haircut. But in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” transgender nonbinary actor iris menas (who prefers not to use capital letters) shines as an older Anybodys as the script by Tony Kushner illuminates the racism, harm of gentrification and the frustration felt by people on the fringes of a postwar society that doesn’t value them because they don’t fit in to the American dream narrative. Menas infuses Anybodys with all the pain of a person who has the confidence to know who they are but faces ignorance and hate on a daily basis.

Adam Driver may be the most notable former Marine to earn an Oscar nomination, but David Alvarez could be the first Tony winner turned infantryman to nab one. In Steven Spielberg’s revelatory remake of “West Side Story,” a production that both makes a case for itself while honoring the achievements of its predecessor, the actor and dancer brings renewed life to the character of Bernardo. Trained as a ballet dancer before becoming one of the youngest people to win a Best Actor Tony for his performance in “Billy Elliot the Musical” on Broadway, Alvarez had all but left show business when he got the call to audition for Bernardo.
After seeing the 2009 Broadway revival, which was directed by Arthur Laurents and featured translated Spanish lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, he had dreamed of doing the show. “I was so in love with the sound, the music, the characters, and the Shakespearean essence to it.

At 15, David Alvarez became one of the youngest Tony Award winners in history, sharing Best Actor in a Musical with his “Billy Elliott” co-stars Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish at the 2009 awards ceremony. But rather than jumping to another lavish Broadway production, Alvarez fulfilled a lifelong dream by joining the military.
“When I joined the military, I never thought I’d come back to acting or the arts in general,” he tells Gold Derby. “I was actually thinking about making it a career. I wanted to become an officer and hopefully one day a general.”
But after three years, Alvarez realized he missed the arts community. “When I joined the military, I never thought I’d come back to acting or the arts in general,” he tells Gold Derby. “I was actually thinking about making it a career. I wanted to become an officer and hopefully one day a general.”

Increasingly, television series are assembling dazzling “dream teams” of well-known and accomplished actors, each capable of carrying their own solo show. Not only do such series attract viewers with their impressive rosters, but the casts also feel energized knowing their A-games will be matched move for move by their co-stars.
“I was overwhelmed, in a good way,” Selena Gomez says of joining comedy icons Steve Martin and Martin Short in “Only Murders in the Building,” only to learn Amy Ryan, Nathan Lane, Tina Fey, Sting and an array of additional top-f light actors would fill out the cast. “I’m on set and I’m playing piano, and Sting’s playing what I’m playing with his guitar, and I’m just like, ‘What is my life?’”
Gomez, returning to acting after a hiatus, admits being surrounded by such a wealth of talent and experience was both challenging and inspiring.

One tweet is all it took. “Thank me when you’re famous,” wrote Rachel Zegler’s friend Makena Reynolds, who sent the then-highschooler a tweet in 2019 announcing an open casting call for “West Side Story.”
One “I-don’t-know-how-i-booked-it” self-tape and several months of callbacks later, Zegler got the part. She was going to be Maria in Steven Spielberg’s newest musical adaptation.
“It’s kind of crazy to look back on that girl who was singing show tunes in her bathroom, and I wonder what she would think of me now,” the 20-year-old tells Variety.
The young actress says hers was the second self-tape Spielberg saw during casting calls for Maria. “I sent him my first take in January, and I started going in steadily to meet with Cindy Tolan up until March,” she says.
Later that month, Zegler received a phone call saying that Spielberg wanted to meet with...

There are a lot of things to appreciate about Steven Spielberg's new remake of West Side Story, which officially hits theaters on Dec. 10. The film, which is based on the 1961 film, centers on the romance between two young lovers: a Puerto Rican girl named Maria (played by Rachel Zegler) and a white boy named Tony (Ansel Elgort), who was formerly part of the gang The Jets.
Spielberg, along with screenwriter Tony Kushner and Rita Moreno, who served as executive producer as well as playing the role of new character Valentina, were very mindful about doing away with the harmful stereotypical portrayal of Puerto Ricans that we see in the original film. One thing they were very intentional about was having Spanish dialogue spoken throughout the film without the inclusion of subtitles. Valentina is a new character in the remake who didn't exist in the original film. She's the Puerto Rican widow of Doc,...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
I’ve got good news for Selena Gomez fans. It sounds like we’ll be hearing some new music from the superstar any day. “It’s not going to be that long from now,” Gomez tells me. “It’s not going to be as long as people think.”
Then she laughs: “And that’s all I’m going to say about that.”
What a year in music it’s been for Gomez. She received her first Grammy nomination — for best Latin pop album — for “Revelación,” her debut Spanish-language EP. “I cried. I cried so much because it’s something that not only means a lot to me, but also a lot to my family and my heritage,” Gomez says. “I worked so hard to try and make that sound as authentic and real as possible. It was a lot harder to...

After much anticipation, the West Side Story remake is officially hitting theaters on Dec. 10. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film centers on Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler as star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria. While the movie is a reimagining of the 1961 classic, Spielberg's remake does away with the harmful stereotypes of Latinxs portrayed in the original. Spielberg also made the conscious decision not to include subtitles for the Spanish dialogue "out of respect for the inclusivity of our intentions to hire a totally Latinx cast to play the Sharks' boys and girls."
In an interview with IGN, the director explained that he gave casting director Cindy Tolan a "mandate" that he "wasn't going to entertain any auditions that aren't parents or grandparents or themselves from Latinx countries." He added, "Especially Puerto Rico, we looked a lot in Puerto Rico, we have 20 performers in our film from Puerto Rico or they're Nuyorican.

Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” has received universal acclaim, starting off awards season on a strong note with a National Board of Review win for Best Actress (and notching a spot on the group’s 10 best list) and a New York Film Critics Circle win for Best Cinematography. The director makes a key creative decision in the film not to subtitle any of the Spanish dialogue. While some could argue this choice leaves non-Spanish speakers out of the loop, Spielberg’s cast is so expressive that scenes in the film prove universal no matter what language they are spoken in. That effect was a driving point behind Spielberg’s decision.
Speaking to IGN in a recent interview, Spielberg said that he chose to not subtitle any of the Spanish dialogue in the film “out of respect for the inclusivity of our intentions to hire a totally Latinx cast to...
