Josh Lawson, Anna Paquin, and Cliff Curtis have been added to the cast of Sarah Spillane’s True Spirit, which is set to begin filming for Netflix later this year.
They will join Teagan Croft in the adaptation of Jessica Watson’s memoir, with the story to detail the then 16-year-old’s 2010 journey to become the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop, and unassisted around the world.
Paquin and Lawson will play Watson’s parents, Julie and Roger Watson, while Curtis is set to portray her coach Ben Bryant.
Lawson most recently starred in New Line Cinema’s Mortal Kombat, while New Zealand actors Curtis and Paquin have also garnered international attention throughout their careers, most recently through roles in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and The Irishman, respectively.
For True Spirit, the trio is set to film on location in Queensland and Sydney, with the former to house the majority of production.

“The Mosquito Coast” is based on the best-selling 1981 novel by author Paul Theroux, uncle of the show’s star Justin Theroux (“The Leftovers”), who plays Allie Fox, an anti-establishment idealist who uproots his family on a dangerous quest through Mexico to flee the U.S. government. The ambitious action drama, already renewed for a second season by AppleTV+, was developed by Neil Cross (“Luther”) and author Tom Bissell, who also executive produce the series alongside Rupert Wyatt (who also directs the first two episodes) both Theroux men, Edward L. McDonnell, Alan Gasmer, Peter Jaysen and Bob Bookman.
Melissa George (“In Treatment”) co-stars as Allie’s mysterious and elusive wife Margot Fox alongside Logan Polish as their rebellious teenage daughter Dina and Gabriel Bateman as their troubled son Charlie. While the novel was previously adapted by Peter Weir in the 1986 film starring Harrison Ford, this series aims to be truer to the...

Watch our exclusive video interview with Seymour above.

Nominated for two Emmy Awards – Outstanding Variety Special and Writing for a Variety Special for her Netflix stand-up show Douglas, Hannah Gadsby has already recorded her acceptance speech.
Despite winning an Emmy in the same writing category last year for Nanette, Gadsby says: “It’s odds on that I won’t win. I’ll put it in my sizzle reel.”
The comedian was speaking today in an Australians in Film webinar with fellow nominees Hugh Jackman, Sarah Snook and Tony McNamara.
Moderator Jenny Cooney pointed out the Emmy organisers are arranging to send a camera to the homes of each of the 140 nominees and asked where all four will be when the awards are presented next month.
McNamara, who is in the running for Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series for Hulu’s The Great, will be at home in the country with his wife and children. Confessing that he is not technically minded,...

Director Maria Schrader strove “not to manipulate too much” esthetically on “Unorthodox” in service of a sense of realism. She elaborates in her exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above), “It’s always the actors who lead the camera. The camera never knows more than the actors. It’s almost, in part, a documentary style of being there with what’s happening.” Schrader explains about the visual style, “It’s a humble camera.”

The creators of the Emmy-nominated limited series “Unorthodox” knew from the beginning that executing a show based on Deborah Feldman’s memoir would be no small feat.
Bringing the story of how Feldman fled her Hasidic community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, for Berlin took copious amounts of research from actor Shira Haas, who plays Esty Shapiro; showrunner and writer Anna Winger; director Maria Schrader; costume designer Justine Seymour; and casting director Esther Kling.
Luckily, Winger was already close to Feldman, who pushed her to turn the book into a show in the first place.
“Our kids go to school together here in Berlin, where I live, and so I read the book and I loved it and we became friends,” Winger told Variety editor Jenelle Riley during a Variety Streaming Room event. “At one point she actually said to me, ‘You should make a TV show of my book.’ And the...

Director Claire McCarthy and producer Jamie Hilton have made a film with an Australian heart and dressed up in a colourful sari, taking our cinema to a new land full of creative and business opportunities. Miguel Gonzalez reports.
