It must be kind of difficult for any modern-day animated filmmakers to make a film that is going to be popular. Outside of Disney/Pixar, Dreamworks and Studio Ghibli, It’s hard to get noticed. Laika are perhaps the most successful outside of the big few production companies and they did it by making several great animated movies, including Coraline, The Boxtrolls and Kubo and the Two Strings. But it’s easy to see why the poster for Rally Road Racers says in bold ‘From The Producer Of Shrek’. Unfortunately, that might be one of the few reasons some viewers might give the movie a chance.

Little know outside South East Asia – it is pointed out here that they’re not as charismatic as giant pandas – slow lorises are a unique group of mammals whose several species all face the threat of extinction. This is partly because they are traded as exotic pets, despite being very hard to care for outside their natural environment, and also because they are highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine. Designed to appeal to the Chinese market, Ross Venokur’s fast paced kids’ animation might just help to change perceptions, with a slow loris hero who will charm everybody who sees it.
It’s a curious hybrid of a film, made in the UK, US and UAE, set mostly in China, and framed by race track commentary which is brusquely Australian. Then again, young Zhi (voiced by Jimmy O Yang) is a curious loris. Whilst the others in his village live up to.

Car racing has always found its appeal among cinema goers, and particularly in fans of animation, with the success of titles like “Cars”, “Turbo” “Redline” etc proving the fact in the most eloquent fashion. Apparently, it turns out that animation can capture the speed needed for the genre, as much as the sci-fi elements usually incorporated in these kinds of films. “Rally Road Racers” is definitely among those titles.
“Rally Road Racers” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative

Freddie Mercury gave his final live performance as the front man of Queen in England in 1986 so it’s clear the Bohemian Rhapsody movie is drawing a lot of moviegoers who either were born after that or were not huge fans of the band.
The 20th Century Fox biopic registered the seventh biggest opening of the year in Oz, 10 per cent ahead of the debut of A Star is Born, which powered through its third weekend.
Meanwhile action-thriller Hunter Killer is another dud in Gerard Butler’s faltering career and Charming, a Us animated musical comedy, did not live up to its title.
Us audiences shunned Fahrenheit 11/9, Michael Moore’s documentary on how Donald Trump ascended to President, so it’s no surprise that Aussies stayed away as the Madman Entertainment release took $36,000 on 17 screens including advance screenings.

In conjunction with the hoopla of Up Fronts week, TNT and TBS have announced a few series that are “in development,” meaning they haven’t yet been put on the schedule and may not ever be (remember Locke & Key?) but they have at least been given hope. Amongst these series are some that are Mafiosi-worthy upon which we will be keeping a watchful eye. The first two are with TNT, the third with TBS:
The Last Ship – In this exciting action/adventure project based on the popular novel by William Brinkley, the crew of a naval destroyer is forced to confront the reality of a new existence when a pandemic decimates most of the earth’s population. Michael Bay (Transformers) intends to direct the pilot if it is green lit. Executive Producers: Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Andrew Form, Hank Steinberg(showrunner and writer) and Steve Kane (writer). Exclusive: Vanguard Films and Animation president and CEO John Williams has locked a deal for screenwriter-author Ross Venokur to write three animated comedy/family feature films. The deal comes after they collaborated on Galaxy High School, a project being developed in partnership with 1492 Films and DreamWorks. "Ross was also a fantastic contributor to crucial drafts of Space Chimps, and he wrote a hilarious CGI/live-action hybrid script for us called The Gnome King," Williams said. Venokur, who makes his living writing novels for children, starts the new deal with The Nut House, a parody of heist films, with critters as the perpetrators. Venokur will follow with a script called Charming, a revenge comedy about what happens when Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty all end up with Prince Charming -- who's the same guy and who learns the perils of providing happy endings for all three. Venokur's repped by ICM and Hung Entertainment Group.

Days before the release of its summer tentpole "Journey to the Center of the Earth," Walden Media has acquired a new family-oriented tale.
The project, titled "Housebroken," takes a comedic look at a group of talking animals forced to live under the same roof when the two halves of the couple that owns them moves in together. It's based on a pitch from "Made of Honor" scribe Adam Sztykiel, who will write the screenplay.
"Housebroken" will combine CG and live action in the manner of such Walden films as "Charlotte's Web" and the "Chronicles of Narnia" series. The movie likely would be released by Fox under the studio's deal with Walden.
Walden co-ceo Michael Bostick and senior vp development and production Amanda Morgan Palmer brought "Housebroken" in to the banner. Mike DeLuca will produce, with Aaron Kaplan and Sean Perrone, who conceived the story, executive producing. Sztykiel, repped by Uta and attorney Jeff Frankel, also is attached to write "Nerd Camp" for Paramount.
"Housebroken" is part of a ramping up of development under Bostick, the Imaging and Shady Acres veteran who joined in the spring and has made his mark by bringing in such projects as Ross Venokur's family comedy "Inner Child" and the action-adventure "The Cruelest Miles."
Bostick is seeking to expand the family-film definition to include adult protagonists and appeal.
"This is perfectly representative of the new direction for Walden in its broader definition of what a family film can mean," he said of "Housebroken." "It's a great conceptual comedy with relatable family issues for adults and talking animals for kids."
Walden's "Journey" opens wide Friday in digital 3-D. In April, the company released the fantasy saga "Nim's Island," which has earned $79 million worldwide.
"Housebroken" marks a return of sorts for Bostick to territory he visited as a producer with last summer's Universal tentpole "Evan Almighty," which also included a bevy of CG animals in the context of a family comedy.

With a goal to add family comedies to its slate, Walden Media has picked up a pitch by Ross Venokur called "Inner Child".
The project marks the first acquisition by newly appointed Walden co-CEO Michael Bostick. The deal was brought to Walden by Amanda Morgan Palmer, who just came aboard as senior vp development and production.
The story centers on an uptight dad whose life is turned upside down when his inner child takes control of his life.
Walden has been successful producing films in which the protagonist is a young adult, including the "Chronicles of Narnia" franchise -- which brought in $55 million at the U.S. boxoffice last weekend with its "Prince Caspian" -- and "Bridge to Terabithia".
But it has yet to really tap into films with an adult protagonist, Bostwick said.
"It's a big idea ... with themes of reawakening the imagination in us all," Bostwick said. "It's a step in a new direction, which is expanding the definition of a PG-rated family film."
The "Inner Child" project will be part of Walden's joint venture with Fox to market and release family films.
