Disney's 2023 "Haunted Mansion" movie boasts 999 ghosts — and nearly that many Easter eggs paying tribute to its source material. Disney first opened the Haunted Mansion theme park attraction in 1969 at Disneyland in California. The ride, which isn't based on any existing Disney story, slowly transports guests through a stately home occupied by hundreds of "happy haunts," as the narrator calls the ghosts who reside there.
Disney artists combined cutting-edge Audio-Animatronics technology, ingenious special effects, and superb music to create what many regard as the greatest theme park attraction of all time. Other versions of Haunted Mansion, some nearly identical to the original and others completely different, opened later at Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland.

Disney has adapted its theme park attractions into movies several times, and with varying degrees of success. Everyone remembers "Pirates of the Caribbean," but the "Country Bears" movie from 2002 left a significantly smaller cultural footprint. Same with "The Haunted Mansion," the Eddie Murphy comedy from 2003. Now Disney is coming back for a second bite at the apple with the slightly differently titled "Haunted Mansion," written by Katie Dippold ("Parks and Recreation") and directed by Justin Simien ("Dear White People"), in an attempt to capitalize on the familiarity of the brand while capturing what makes that attraction so special.
But what exactly does make that Disney staple so special? If you polled theme park fans, none of them would blink if you called it the greatest theme park ride of all time. And if you asked Disney Imagineers -- the folks who actually design and build Disney theme park attractions -- why it's so special,...

Rolly Crump, the pioneering Walt Disney Imagineer who helped design It’s a Small World, the Enchanted Tiki Room, The Haunted Mansion and other attractions for Disneyland, has died. He was 93.
Crump died Sunday at his home in Carlsbad, California, his family announced.
“Rolly and his family would like to thank the fans for supporting his work over the years,” they said in a statement. “His entire life was filled with one ‘kind of a cute story’ after the next, and he will be remembered with lots of love.”
Crump’s career with Disney, which included a stint as Disneyland’s art director, spanned more than 40 years (he left a couple of times to launch his own company and to work on projects around the world). He retired in 1996 and was named a Disney Legend in 2004.

Rolly Crump, a legendary Disney animator and Imagineer, whose designs helped define the early days of Disneyland, has died at the age of 93.
Rolly joined Walt Disney Studios in 1952, working on a number of the period’s animated features in marginal positions, including serving as an in-between artist on “Peter Pan” and as an assistant animator on “Lady and the Tramp,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”
In 1959, he was recruited by Walt to join what was then known as Wed Enterprises, later Walt Disney Imagineering. While at Imagineering, he worked on designs for The Haunted Mansion (including the prototypical Museum of the Weird), the Enchanted Tiki Room and It’s a Small World, including the iconic Tower of the Four winds sculpture/statue that accompanied It’s a Small World when the ride debuted at the 1964/65 World’s Fair in Queens.

In the first teaser trailer for Disney's new live-action "Haunted Mansion" movie, based on the classic theme park attraction, there are plenty of callbacks to famous ride moments. You don't have to be a Disney historian to recognize the "grinning ghosts come out to socialize," or the moment when a "motley crew of so-called supernatural experts" (per the official synopsis) stare up at a familiar wall of elongating portraits in an art gallery. However, there's at least one blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in the trailer that's something of a Disney deep cut, homaging a forgotten part of the Haunted Mansion ride's history.
Around the 1:10 mark in the trailer, you can see a shot of someone getting knocked back onto a bed by a burst of water. Nothing like that happens in the current version of the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland, the Magic Kingdom, or any of the international Disney parks.

101 Dalmatians was one of my favorites films as a child. I generally found that Disney cartoons involving animals, like it and Jungle Book were a lot funnier and less sentimental than all those boring girly fairy-tales like Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs and Sleeping Beauty. I also liked the fact that the action took place not in some fantastic never-never land but in the real England. 101 Dalmatians of course deals with the theft of a litter of Dalmatian puppies by a woman named Cruella De Vil who wants to skin them and turn them into fur coats. The human authorities are baffled, so it falls to the kidnapped puppies’ parents, Pongo and Perdita, to track them down and rescue them- along with a lot more Dalmatian pups acquired by Cruella for the same nefarious purpose.
101 Dalmatians is rather different in look from a lot of earlier Disney cartoons, which were characterized by bright colors.

These days, it’s all about the Disney princesses, but Perdita is merely a dog without high pedigree. As a result, she and her mate Pongo, are often overlooked. They’re certainly overshadowed by their antagonist, the Dalmatian loving Cruella De Vil, about the chew every scene in Once Upon a Time. Thank goodness, then, that Walt Disney reminds us about the utter charm contained within their 1961 release 101 Dalmatians. Out Tuesday in a handsome Diamond Combo Pack, their 17th film holds up remarkably well.

The first great Walt Disney Pictures movie based on one of it’s legendary park rides was Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and director Guillermo del Toro is working on a live-action film based on Disney’s Haunted Mansion, that will thankfully not be a comedy.
Now, the LATimes reports that Walt Disney Pictures is working on a new film that will be based on a planned park attraction that actually never made it into existence at Disney’s parks called, The Museum of the Weird. The project is being written by Ahmet Zappa.
The Museum of the Weird was being put together by longtime Disneyland imagineers Rolly Crump and Claude Coats. The proposed walk-through attraction was originally meant to sit adjacent to The Haunted Mansion, complete with its own restaurant, and promised to showcase ghostly organists, magical carts, talking chairs and other surreal and odd exhibits.

While Melissa holds down Hall H and the Lr crew takes the stage for the Masters of the Web panel at Comic Con, I'm over in New York is super psyched about Guillermo Del Toro re-booting the marred Haunted Mansion film franchise. Mainly, because the Haunted Mansion is one of my geek obsessions and the Eddie Murphy movie laughed at the very intriguing and Existing plot threads embedded in the Disneyland ride. I’m a big fan of Disneyland, even if the company that runs it occasionally makes NewsCorp look like the lesser of two evils. Despite Walt Disney’s numerous faults (naming names during McCarthyism to bring up the obvious), I like the idea of a man who had enough balls to devise a theme park that went far beyond a carnival, a traveling fair or cheap amusements.Disneyland as an idea, stripped of what it means to be sold childhood memories,...
