Eric Kripke is gonna catch ’em all. “The Boys” showrunner has slowly but surely been casting the stars of the iconic CW series “Supernatural,” which Kripke created, on his R-rated Amazon Prime Video superhero drama. And he’s got one “very big one” he’s eyeing to bring on in Season 5, even if it’s for “a single episode” — Jared Padalecki, a.k.a. Sam Winchester.
“He’s been busy the last few years, so schedules haven’t worked out,” Kripke told Variety in an interview Thursday, referring to Padalecki’s starring role on the CW’s “Walker,” which was canceled earlier this week after four seasons. Padalecki starred alongside Jensen Ackles on the CW’s “Supernatural” for 15 seasons, from its debut on what was then the WB in 2005 through its series finale in 2020.
“But now, unfortunately, [‘Walker’] got canceled — but the good thing is he’s free,” Kripke said.

The Boys has been collecting cast and crew members from Supernatural like they are Infinity Stones. It started off with showrunner, Eric Kripke, who was the mastermind behind both the series; which was followed by Jim Beaver and Jeffery Dean Morgan, who appeared in the trailer for the fourth season. Ever since Jensen Ackles showed up in the third season of the superhero satire, fans of the hit CW series have wondered when the other half of the Winchester brothers will arrive.

Several actors were billed as series regulars on Gilmore Girls during its seven-season run. Not every major star was a series regular, though. Fans might have noticed that the show listed a few stars as special guests despite appearing regularly on the show. Jared Padalecki, who portrayed Rory Gilmore’s love interest Dean Forrester, was credited as a guest on Gilmore Girls. The Gilmore Girls intro billed Edward Herrmann the same way. Valerie Campbell, a production team member, recently revealed exactly how Padalecki’s billing allowed him to move onto another show with ease.
Jared Padalecki was billed as a special guest on ‘Gilmore Girls’
In a TikTok video, Valerie Campbell, the key set costumer for Gilmore Girls, explained that the contractual obligations for a special guest are completely different from those of a series regular. Sure, the designation had some drawbacks. For example, special guests are not paid unless they are on set.

CW’s Supernatural is one of the most iconic sci-fi horror series of the 2000s, with a loyal fan base that’s grown for decades throughout its 15 seasons. From fighting demons to angels and vampires, the series follows two brothers, Sam Winchester (Jared Padelecki )and Dean Winchester ( Jensen Ackles) whose lives revolve around hunting the supernatural beings in the world. While the Winchesters are the main draw of the series, Sam and Ruby’s relationship was one of the most iconic pairings in its earlier seasons. Update Saturday: The Winchesters executive producer Jensen Ackles weighed in on the series officially ending after no new network home could be found.
“With a massive Network shift coupled with an industry strike…welp…that’s some unfortunate timing,” he said on Twitter, thanking fans who rallied to try and save the show following its cancellation by the CW.
Previous Friday: The Supernatural franchise is coming to end — at least for now — as The Winchesters has not been able to get a second season anywhere. Producing studio Warner Bros. Television’s efforts to set up the Supernatural prequel series at another network or streaming platform following its cancellation by the CW have been unsuccessful. All possible avenues have been exhausted, and the search for a new home has come to an end, despite a strong #SaveTheWinchesters campaign led by series executive producer (and Supernatural star) Jensen Ackles.

"The Winchesters" is officially on the hunt for a new home. The "Supernatural" prequel has been canceled at The CW after one season, Deadline reported on May 12. However, Warner Bros. has reportedly been shopping around for a new landing spot for the show, so it's not the end of the road yet.
"The Winchesters" stars Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger as "Supernatural" protagonists Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam Winchester (Jared Paladecki)'s parents, John and Mary. It follows them as they fall in love and face off against - you guessed it – supernatural forces in order to save themselves and world. The show is narrated by Ackles, who also serves as executive producer along with his brother Daneel through their company Chaos Machine.

The CW has opted not to pick up a second season of The Winchesters. The news is not surprising; the Supernatural prequel was among the long-shot renewal prospects at the network under its new ownership as it focuses on unscripted and lower-cost scripted programming (primarily international acquisitions/co-productions) in pursuit of profitability.
So far, only the CW’s strongest existing scripted series, All American and Walker, have been renewed for next season. The three least likely, The Winchesters, Kung Fu and Walker Independence, have been canceled. Remaining in limbo are Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming, which are believed to have the best chance (however small it may be), followed by Gotham Knights.

It’s a small success, but the CW will surely take it these days: Tuesday’s series premiere of The Winchesters was The CW’s most-watched debut so far this season in total viewers.
The Supernatural spinoff averaged 757,000. It was the network’s most-watched series debut since Naomi on January 2022, and it is just behind Walker as the CW’s second most-watched premiere this season.
It was also the CW’s most-watched telecast in the time period since June 28, 2022 (Superman & Lois).
The Winchesters is a prequel to the CW’s long-running Supernatural, centered on Dean and Sam Winchester’s parents – John and Mary. Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (voiced by Jensen Ackles), The Winchesters tells how John met Mary and then went on to save the world.
Over the weekend at New York Comic Con, it was announced that Tom Welling would join the series this season.

If Jared Pedalecki and Jensen Ackles were the heartthrobs of The CW, Mark Pedowitz was its heartbeat.
When Nexstar announced its completed acquisition of (75 percent of) The CW on Monday, it installed board member Dennis Miller, a venture capitalist with executive stints at Sony, Lionsgate, and Turner, as the broadcast network’s new president. Pedowitz, who was chairman and CEO of the youth-skewing broadcast network for the past 11 years is out; he’ll stay in the game via the revival of his former production company.
Though The CW never quite soared like so many of its DC superheroes, the decade-plus under Pedowitz had its moments — and its misses. IndieWire looks back on both below.

“This is the story of how John Winchester met Mary Campbell,” Jensen Ackles says in his signature low growl at the top of the TV Insider exclusive trailer for The Winchesters, above. Played by Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly, the story of how Dean and Sam Winchester’s parents got together is the driving tale behind The Winchesters. And in the all new trailer for The CW‘s Supernatural prequel, John and Mary’s meeting is far from a meet-cute. Mary has already gone up against her fair share of demons by the time she meets the very green John, who battles his first in the video, but inadvertently hits Mary in the face instead. She hits him right back, and then tells him to “stop helping!” before whacking her leg across the hellish figure’s face. “What was that?!” a panicked John asks. When "Supernatural" kicked off in 2005, the story began with a simple premise: The monster-of-the-week series followed two monster-hunting brothers looking for their father on a cross-country adventure, leading them to fight the many otherworldly creatures that stepped out at night. It has been a while since that glorious first episode, and things have changed quite a bit. "Supernatural" went on to run for 15 seasons, its finale airing in November 2020. You'd think its star cast has moved on ... but not entirely.
Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles portrayed on-screen brothers Sam and Dean Winchester for 15 years of their lives, and clearly they've been through a lot together: from repeatedly dying, to being resurrected, to dying again. Although Padalecki and Ackles have since carried on with different projects — "The CW's "Walker" and Amazon's "The Boys," respectively — the former actor has never stopped "grieving" the end of "Supernatural."

Amazon’s superhero series “The Boys” got a little more super(natural) in its Season 3 debut on Friday with the introduction of Jensen Ackles to the cast in the role of Soldier Boy. His arrival on the series marked a reunion for Ackles and “The Boys” showrunner Eric Kripke, as Kripke is also the creator of The CW’s “Supernatural,” which starred Ackles and Jared Padalecki as brothers Dean and Sam Winchester throughout its 15-season run.
So now that Ackles has made his way from one Kripke show to another, is there any chance we’ll see his on-screen brother drop by for a cameo either in the currently airing third season or the yet-to-be-picked-up-but-definitely-a-safe-bet Season 4?
“I would love a Jared cameo! He’s always welcome on the show,” Kripke told Variety. “Up to now, the guy is on a network show that has however many episodes — like, a lot more than eight.

Carry on, wayward ‘Supernatural” fans: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins reunited at the CW network’s upfront presentation Thursday, coming together to “pitch” network boss Mark Pedowitz some projects.
“From major cultural events to hit specials, it is always a good time when the CW goes off script–,” Pedowitz said during a portion of the upfront devoted to non-regularly scheduled programming.
He was quickly joined on stage by “Supernatural” alums Padalecki, Ackles (EP on new “Supernatural” origin story series “The Wincthesters”) and Collins (starring in upcoming superhero show “Gotham Knights.”)
“We were just, not spying, just kind of existing nearby. And we heard you talking about the movies and specials, and since all three of us are back on the CW this year, we just wanted to pitch some ideas to you,” Padalecki said. “Just back-of-the-napkin kind of stuff,” Collins added.

Having spent 15 seasons together on Supernatural, the men who used to go by Dean and Sam Winchester almost didn’t even need full sentences when Jensen Ackles stepped behind the camera of Jared Padalecki’s current CW series Walker.

Spending 15 years building that up, that’s never going to go away. So that was fun. And being able to direct him in such a quick way… I...

The CW is looking ahead to next season as the future of the network remains in limbo.

The CW has started making pilot orders.
Supernatural prequel The Winchesters, a Walker spinoff and DC universe-set Gotham Knights all have been picked up to pilot.
The move means that both stars of The CW’s Supernatural will be producing pilots for the upcoming season: Jensen Ackles with The Winchesters and Jared Padalecki with Walker: Independence.
The trio of pilot orders is unsurprising – Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva pointed to all three likely making the cut in her Pilot Season 2022 rundown. The network also handed an additional six scripts to the female-fronted Zorro series project.

Updated, 7:06 Pm: Supernatural’s Jared Padalecki has further opened up about his Twitter exchanges back in June with former co-star Jensen Ackles, chalking the situation up to a misunderstanding.
“I love Jensen deeply. He’s my brother,” the actor said in an interview with The New York Times published August 12. “He has been for many years, and he always will be, no matter what.”
The conversation between the actors began to unfold when Padalecki learned via Twitter of Supernatural prequel The Winchesters, which Ackles is exec producing with his wife, Danneel, as Deadline first reported.
“Dude. Happy for you. Wish I heard about this some way other than Twitter,” Padalecki wrote with a retweet of Deadline’s story. “I’m excited to watch, but bummed that Sam Winchester had no involvement whatsoever.”
While fans believed Padalecki might be joking when he suggested that he was blindsided, he made it clear that he was not.

It seems Jared Padalecki was blindsided about the announcement that his “Supernatural” co-star Jensen Ackles is developing a spinoff series about their characters’ parents.
After news broke Thursday evening that Jensen and Danneel Ackles are working on a new spinoff titled “The Winchesters,” Padalecki took to Twitter to reveal that he’s had “no involvement whatsoever” in the show and a tweet by Ackles was the first he’d ever heard about it.

When asked by a fan if his tweet was a joke, Padalecki replied, “No. It’s not. This is the first I’ve heard about it. I’m gutted.”
